When bivalve aquaculture production relies on natural recruitment, yields may decline due to density-independent constraints at multiple life stages. These life stage transitions include larval settlement, which is typically variable with rapid losses of newly settled individuals and the additional mortality from predation or abiotic factors (e.g., temperature, desiccation, and physical disturbance) as the bivalves grow. Recruitment monitoring and outplants were used to evaluate the potential limiting factors affecting different life stages in two nonnative clam species, Manila clams, Ruditapes philippinarum, and softshell clams, Mya arenaria in Willapa Bay, Washington, USA. Recruits (250–500 µm) did not differ in cumulative abundance in 2023 relative to prior years of monitoring (five recruitment seasons between 2011 and 2017). Recruits surviving to the end of the summer represented 12% or less of those that had arrived, but still showed spatial patterns consistent with rates of arrival. Manila clams outplanted across an elevation gradient suffered high mortality below mean lower low water regardless of size class (small: 8 mm and large: 20 mm), where native rock crabs (Cancer productus) were abundant. Clam growth declined at higher tidal elevations consistent with inundation time. European green crabs (Carcinus maenas) were relatively abundant at midtidal levels where commercial clam aquaculture typically occurs in the bay and where small clams were particularly reduced without predator protection from mesh. While these data support that green crabs may be reducing survival of 1-year-old clams at midintertidal elevations, they also identify earlier bottlenecks to repopulating commercial clam beds, which point out why seeding clams is used to maintain consistent production. Further exploration is needed before green crabs can be singled out as a new limit on clam yields relative to the roles of predation across the size classes of clams in Willapa Bay. 相似文献

Here, we report an outbreak of Trypanosoma vivax-induced trypanosomosis in Brazilian hair sheep on a farm in Paraíba state, a non-endemic region in northeastern Brazilian. Of 306 total sheep, 240 showed clinical signs and 216 died. Clinical signs included anorexia, lethargy, anemia, rough hair coat, weight loss, submandibular edema, abortion, and in some cases, neurological signs such as head pressing, lateral recumbence, paddling movements and muscle tremors. T. vivax was identified by blood smear analysis and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). At necropsy, animals exhibited watery blood, pale tissue coloring, and the presence of liquid in the peritoneal cavity and pericardial sac. Histologically, nonsuppurative myocarditis and meningoencephalitis with areas of malacia were observed. After treatment, no parasites were detected by blood smear analysis or PCR. Cattle and buffalo that remained in the same pasture were also infected but presented with asymptomatic infections. Epidemiological data suggest that T. vivax was introduced to the farm and the susceptible flock by buffalos that were asymptomatic carriers of the infection; T. vivax was most likely transmitted by Tabanus spp. bites and also iatrogenically. 相似文献

Chagas disease is a parasitic infection that can result in a progressive dilated cardiomyopathy. Here, we present the epidemiologic details of a suspected locally acquired transmission case originating from the southern United States. This is the first published report of Chagas disease in a young, healthy United States veteran with repeat triatomine exposures in Arizona. This study investigated the influence of heat shock during in vitro maturation on embryo development following in vitro fertilization (IVF) or parthenogenesis (Part). Immature bovine cumulus–oocyte complexes were exposed to heat shock (41.0°C) during the first 12 hr of in vitro maturation (IVM), followed by 12 hr at 38.5°C. Control group consisted of in vitro maturation for 24 hr at 38.5°C. Oocytes were in vitro‐fertilized or activated with ionomycin and cultured in vitro for 192 hr post‐in vitro insemination or parthenogenetic activation (hpia). There was an interaction (p < .01) between temperature of IVM and method of oocyte activation (IVF or Part) for cleavage at 48 hpia. Heat shock had a negative impact (p < .01) on cleavage of IVF embryos, whereas no (p > .05) effect was found in the Part embryos. Embryo development towards blastocyst stage at 168 and 192 hpia decreased in both IVF and Part embryos derived from heat‐shocked oocytes. Heat shock increased (p < .05) the apoptotic index in Part blastocysts, but no effect (p > .05) was found in IVF counterparts. Heat shock also down‐regulated the expression of AQP3 (p < .01) and up‐regulated the expression of HSP70.1 (p < .01) in Part blastocysts, whereas it down‐regulated the expression of ATP1A1 (p < .05) in IVF blastocysts. In conclusion, the effects of heat shock during IVM on early embryo cleavage and blastocyst apoptosis are influenced by the method of oocyte activation and expression of some genes can be disturbed in embryos derived from heat‐shocked oocytes. 相似文献

Agroforestry systems have been recognized as areas with high conservation potential, and there is a need to quickly assess
the biodiversity and tree stocking density available in these systems. However, it is not clear if the commonly used fixed
area plot is most efficient for sampling such landscapes, or if a different method could provide equivalent data with less
effort. Thus, a field and simulation-based study was carried out to compare the efficiency and accuracy of a variable area
transect versus the fixed area square plot. Field efficiency tests were carried out in three habitat types, robusta coffee
plantations, arabica coffee plantations and a privately owned forest fragment, in Kodagu, southern India. A simulation study
of bias, precision and accuracy of the two methods for tree density estimation also was carried out using various spatial
distribution patterns and densities. The variable area transect was significantly more efficient per unit effort in the field
than the fixed area square plot. In the simulation tests both methods performed equally well under random spatial distribution.
However, under simulated aggregated distribution both methods were positively biased (square plot up to 12% at low density,
variable area transect 9–12% at all densities), and under simulated regular distribution the variable area transect was slightly
negatively biased (−5 to −7% at medium to high density). The variable area transect thus can be recommended over the square
plot for rapid assessment of tree diversity and density, when the vegetation is expected to be randomly dispersed. 相似文献

Objectives : To assess the accuracy of intestinal ultrasound for diagnosis of intestinal obstruction in dogs and cats. Methods : A prospective clinical study was performed. Inclusion criteria were dogs and cats with clinical signs suggestive of gastrointestinal obstruction. Animals with no obstruction detected on ultrasound were excluded if they could not be monitored for 48 hours to confirm absence of obstruction. Sonographic diagnosis of small intestinal obstruction was based on identification of at least two findings suggestive of intestinal obstruction. Results : Ninety‐two patients suspected of having intestinal obstruction were included. Correct diagnosis of intestinal obstruction was made in 21 cases (23%), and in 68 (74%) this diagnosis was excluded. Interpretation of the images on prospective analysis had sensitivity, positive predictive, specificity and negative predictive values of 100%, 87.5%, 95.8% and 100%, respectively. Clinical Significance : Ultrasonography is an excellent method for investigation of animals with gastrointestinal disorders, and is particularly useful for excluding obstructive processes. 相似文献
