Soil degradation in the highlands of Ethiopia is a serious problem that threatens the sustainability of agriculture. Although efforts have been made to develop and promote several soil conservation technologies, their adoption has not been widespread. This study, based on responses from a sample of 101 households which operate on 204 plots in Western Ethiopia, interviewed in 2003 cropping year, employed a Tobit model to identify the main factors influencing farmers' decision to adopt and intensify the use of improved and indigenous soil and water conservation (SWC) measures. The results suggest that area of cultivated land, land/labour ratio, age and education level of household head and distance of the plot from home and slope of the plot provided statistically adequate predictive power on the use and intensity of SWC measures. In this study was analyzed the effect of crop year and harvesting time on the fatty acid composition of cv. Picual virgin olive oil. The study was carried out during the fruit ripening period for three crop seasons. The mean fatty acid composition of Picual oils was determined. The oils contained palmitic acid (11.9%), oleic acid (79.3%), and linoleic acid (2.95%). The content of palmitic acid and saturated fatty acids decreased during fruit ripening while oleic and linoleic acids increased. The amount of stearic and linolenic acids decreased. The amount of saturated acids, palmitic and stearic, and the polyunsaturated acids linoleic and linolenic was dependent on the time of harvest, whereas the amount of oleic acid varied with the crop year. The differences observed between crop years for both palmitic and linoleic acid may be explained by the differences in the temperature during oil biosynthesis and by the amount of summer rainfall for oleic acid content. A significant relationship was observed between the MUFA/PUFA ratio and the oxidative stability measured by the Rancimat method. 相似文献

The objective of this study was to demonstrate how different factors can simultaneously influence the oxidative stability of an oil-in-water emulsion, and how these factors can be used to enlarge the variation range of oxidation markers, expressed as peroxide value (PV) and TBARS. Initially, a Plackett-Burman design was used to screen seven factors (temperature, pH, and iron, copper, ascorbyl palmitate, ascorbic acid, and sodium chloride concentrations). A temperature elevation of 30 to 60 °C reduced PV and TBARS, a pH change from 3.0 to 7.0 increased PV and reduced TBARS, and the presence of ascorbic acid (1 mmol/L) had no significant effect on PV but increased TBARS (p < 0.05). Thus, the temperature was fixed at 30 °C, and an emulsion was formulated with different combinations of ascorbic acid, iron, and pH according to a central composite rotatable design. Regression models were fitted to PV and TBARs responses and optimized to get the higher values of both markers of oxidation. The optimized emulsion contained 1.70 mmol/L AH (ascorbic acid) and 0.885 mmol/L FeSO(4) · 7H(2)O (1.0 mmol/L Fe(2+)) at pH 5.51 and 30 °C. The range of variation observed for oxidation markers in the optimized emulsion model (PV, 0-4.27 mequiv/L; TBARS, 0-13.55 mmol/L) was larger than the variation observed in the nonoptimized model (PV, 0-1.05 mequiv/L; TBARS, 0-1.00 mmol/L). The antioxidant activity of six compounds (Trolox, α-tocopherol, caffeic acid, gallic acid, catechin, and TBHQ) was evaluated using the optimized emulsion conditions. After application of the Tukey HSD post hoc statistical test, the samples that were not different (p < 0.05) in the nonoptimized emulsions showed a significant difference in the optimized emulsions. Considering the importance of the interactions on oxidation studies, our model represents a significant improvement in a direct methodology that can be applied to evaluate natural compounds under different combination of factors. 相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to detect leptospiral DNA by PCR in semen and urine samples of stallions to test for venereal transmission in horses. A total of 10 stallions from four herds were studied, and sampling was conducted in semen and urine for culture and PCR and serum for serology. From the 10 serum samples tested, 6 (60%) were seroreactive. No pure culture was obtained, but leptospiral DNA was detected by PCR in 50% of the semen samples and 30% of urine samples. The present study aimed to detect leptospiral DNA by PCR in semen and urine samples of stallions to test for venereal transmission in horses. Based on these findings, we suggest that there is potential transmission of leptospirosis in horses by sexual transmission. 相似文献

The present work discusses the startup and operation of different biotrickling filters during the simultaneous removal of NH3, H2S, and ethyl mercaptan (EM) for odor control, focusing on (a) the impact of pH control in the stability of the nitrification processes during reactor startup and (b) the crossed effects among selected pollutants and their by-products. Two biotrickling filters were packed with poplar wood chips (R1 and R2A), while a third reactor was packed with polyurethane foam (R2B). R2A and R2B presented a pH control system, whereas R1 did not. Loads of 2?C10?g N?CNH3 m?3?h?1, 5?C16?g S?CH2S m?3?h?1, and 1?C6?g EM m?3?h?1 were supplied to the bioreactors. The presence of a pH control loop in R2A and R2B proved to be crucial to avoid long startup periods and bioreactors malfunctioning due to biological activity inhibition. In addition, the impact of the presence of different concentrations of a series of N species (NH 4 + , NO 2 ? , and NO 3 ? ) and S species (SO 4 2? and S2?) on the performance of the two biotrickling filters was studied by increasing their load to the reactors. Sulfide oxidation proved to be the most resilient process, since it was not affected in any of the experiments, while nitrification and EM removal were severely affected. In particular, the latter was affected by SO 4 2? and NO 2 ? , while nitrification was significantly affected by NH 4 + . The objective of this study was the development of a method for the quantification of free fatty acids (FFA) using less aggressive reactants against the handler and the environment than those used in the classic method of Lowry and Tinsley. The modified procedure is a variation of the Lowry and Tinsley method employing cyclohexane in place of benzene. The use of benzene is prohibited in certain work processes and laboratories, and the competent authority in each country is actively promoting research into harmless or less harmful products that could replace benzene. A comparison with the traditional AOCS titration method for oil analysis was performed. FFA content in mackerel frozen at -10 degrees C was measured according to the three methods over a 12 month period. The results showed similar values, and good correlations were obtained. 相似文献

This study aimed to assess the effect of liming as an ameliorator of copper (Cu) toxicity in black oats (Avena strigosa Schreb.) grown in soil with a sandy texture. The treatments were soil supplementation with increasing doses of lime (0.0, 0.5 and 1.0 g kg?1) and two of Cu (0 and 50 mg kg?1). Pre-germinated black oat seeds were sown for 30 days in the soil, subsequently, the plant height, root and shoot dry mass and concentration of total chlorophyll, chlorophylls a and b, carotenoids and total soluble carbohydrates and starch were analyzed. The dose of 50 mg kg?1 soil Cu caused a toxic effect on black oat plant growth and development, affected the internal distribution of nutrients, decreased the leaf chlorophyll concentration and increased the leaf concentration of total soluble carbohydrates and starch. The identification of alternative substrates suitable for seedling production is very important, while boron nutrition is also relevant due to plant requirement and its difficult management. Thus, four experiments were carried out from October 2012 to April 2013 to evaluate the effect of substrates using decomposed buriti (Mauritia vinifera Mart.) stem (DBS) and boron fertilizing for seedling production of yellow passion fruit (Passiflora edulis Sims). The experimental design was completely randomized in factorial scheme 6 × 2 + 1, referring to the substrates [S1: DBS, S2: soil and sand 1:1 (20%) + DBS (80%), S3: soil and sand 1:1 (40%) + DBS (60%), S4: soil and sand 1:1 (60%) + DBS (40%), S5: soil and sand 1:1 (80%) + DBS (20%), S6: commercial substrate (additional treatment) and S7: soil, sand and manure 1:1:2] with and without boron. The seedling emergence, emergence rate, plant height, stem diameter, root length, root volume and dry mass of roots and shoots were recorded. The substrates S2 (without B fertilizing) and S4 (B fertilized with 0.5 mg dm?3) produced seedlings with more than 3.0 g of shoot dry mass and at least 30 cm in height, and can be used for production of high-quality yellow passion fruit seedlings. 相似文献

Two-dimensional electrophoresis was used to investigate sarcoplasmic protein expression in pig Semimembranosus muscles sampled 20 min after slaughter. Two groups (light and dark) of 12 animals were selected from 1000 pigs, based on meat L values measured 36 h postmortem. Twenty-two proteins or fragments (p < 0.05) were differentially expressed. Muscles leading to darker meat had a more oxidative metabolism, indicated by more abundant mitochondrial enzymes of the respiratory chain, hemoglobin, and chaperone or regulator proteins (HSP27, alphaB-crystallin, and glucose-regulated protein 58 kDa). Conversely, enzymes of glycolysis were overexpressed in the lighter group. Such samples were also characterized by higher levels of glutathione S-transferase omega, which can activate the RyR calcium channels, and higher levels of cyclophilin D. This protein pattern is likely to have severe implications on postmortem metabolism, namely, acceleration of ATP depletion and pH fall and subsequent enhanced protein denaturation, well-known to induce discoloration. 相似文献
