Certain immunological responses of 4-6 month old calves experimentally inoculated with either cytopathic or non-cytopathic bovine virus diarrhoea virus (BVDV) were compared with those of uninfected control calves. The tests used to demonstrate the immunological responses were the transformation of lymphocytes by PHA mitogen, the percentage of lymphocytes with surface immunoglobulin, and the antibody titres induced by an intravenous inoculation of killed Brucella abortus. There were no significant differences between the two groups of calves and therefore, the mild experimental disease produced by BVDV did not appear to affect adversely the immunological response. 相似文献

The effect of low grade chronic Fasciola hepatica infection on the concentration of plasma glutamate dehydrogenase (GD), gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (gamma-GT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) was investigated in sheep dosed daily with three (AL3), eight (AL8) or 14 (AL14) metacercariae over 22 weeks or given a single dose of 200 metacercariae. Significant increases in plasma GD activity first occurred after nine, 12 and 23 weeks and in gamma-GT activity after 12, 24 and 32 weeks for groups AL14, AL8 and AL3 respectively. Changes in AST activity were not as clearly related to dose level. In sheep with single infection, both GD and gamma-GT were capable of detecting liver damage resulting from the migration of 10 or more flukes. Plasma GD and gamma-GT activities are more sensitive indicators of liver cell damage in chronic subclinical fascioliasis than AST activity and gamma-GT may be more suitable as a diagnostic aid on account of its greater stability. 相似文献

Coccidiosis of beef cattle, in both its enteric and nervous forms, seen in feedlots in Western Canada is discussed. Cases of coccidiosis accompanied by nervous signs, occasionally up to 30% of those affected enterically, are most common during the coldest winter months. The pathogenesis of the nervous form of the disease is unknown. Clinical management of disease outbreaks using various chemotherapeutics is described. The following sequence of treatments was administered to a Saint Bernard dog with a primary distal right radius osteosarcoma: 54 days of daily disodium 1-hydroxyethylidenediphosphonate (HEDP) subcutaneous injections; 53 days of HEDP per os ; one 32 P-HEDP intravenous injection. During the pretreatment period, there was an extensive increase in calcific tumor growth and osteoblastic proliferation. After the subcutaneous HEDP treatment, almost complete tumor necrosis was seen. After the oral HEDP treatment, only the deepest tumor portion contained active osteoblasts, calcific growth of the tumor was completely blocked, and uptake of 99m Tc-Sn-HEDP was reduced to one fourth of the pretreatment uptake. After a single 32 P-HEDP dose, large areas of tumor necrosis were evident histopathologically. However, subsequent resumption of cellular activity occurred in the tumor, and the uptake of 99m Tc-Sn-HEDP increased to pretreatment values. These data suggest that systemically administered HEDP should be studied further for its possible therapeutic potential in the treatment of osteosarcoma and indicate a need for further study of 32 P-HEDP or possibly 33 P-HEDP. 相似文献

Trends in the numbers of infective nematode larvae on pasture plots contaminated by cattle at different seasons of the year were defined in 3 different climatic regions. The main nematodes were Ostertagia ostertagi, Trichostrongylus spp, Haemonchus spp and Cooperia spp.
On the North Coast of New South Wales with a sub-tropical climate, the numbers of infective larvae of all 4 nematodes rose rapidly to peak levels soon after each seasonal period of contamination began, then fell quickly within a few months. On the Central Coast of New South Wales, the trends were similar to those on the North Coast, except that the larvae persisted on the pasture for a much longer time. On the Northern Tablelands of New South Wales, where temperatures were much colder than on the coast, larval development was slower and major peaks of larval availability did not occur until early spring. These different seasonal trends in each region were considered to be related to the climatic differences between the regions.
On pastures which were contaminated continuously, larval numbers reached maximum levels in mid-winter on the Central Coast and in early spring on the Northern Tablelands. It was concluded that the majority of these larvae were derived from the contamination of pastures in autumn and winter. Subsequently in summer, a rapid dying out of larvae was observed in all the regions, probably due to the effect of hotter weather.
The studies suggest that a reduction in the contamination of pasture with nematode eggs in autumn and winter could result in pastures carrying fewer larvae and thus form the basis of effective worm control programs for cattle. 相似文献

The effectiveness of selenium pellets in grazing Merino sheep was examined by comparing the selenium status of treated and untreated animals over a 13 month period. The selenium status of treated sheep, as measured by blood glutathione peroxidase levels, had reached a maximum 3 months after treatment and there was a marked decline between 5 and 13 months. All pellets were recovered from treated sheep at slaughter this confirmed that the observed decline was not due to a loss of pellets.
In a separate study sheep were slaughtered 14 months after treatment and some of the recovered pellets were readministered to sheep maintained on a low selenium diet. SUMMARY Cattle were vaccinated with Brucella abortus strain 19 subcutaneously in doses ranging from the normal (2.0 ml) dose of standard vaccine down to 1/400 of the normal dose, and via the conjunctival sac with 1/2 or 1/20 of the normal dose. Under all vaccination regimes serum antibody titres in the complement fixation test (CFT) rose more rapidly, reached higher levels, declined more slowly and involved a greater proportion of animals, than titres in the indirect haemolysis test (IHLT). The interval between the first positive serological test and parturition was determined for 54 pregnant cows infected with a virulent field strain (VRI 3) of B. abortus. The concentration of serum phenytoin was determined in normal dogs following the administration of phenytoin by either the intravenous or oral route. An intravenous dose of 11 and 33 mg/kg of body weight was given to six dogs and a further dose of 44 mg/kg was given to two dogs. Serial blood samples were taken following the three doses for determination of pharmacokinetic parameters. The mean half-life was 3.35, 3.84 and 4.57 h as the dose was increased. Signs of toxicity occurred immediately following the infusion of phenytoin (emesis, ataxia and seizures). In the first oral studies, serial blood samples were taken for 2 consecutive days following a dose of 11 and 88 mg/kg, t.i.d. The time—concentration profiles of phenytoin varied significantly from one day to the next in the same dog. In the second oral study, blood samples were taken at 3 and 7 h following a dose of 11, 22, 44, 66 and 88 mg/kg, t.i.d. There was a poor correlation between the size of the oral dose and the concentration of serum phenytoin. Due to the short half-life and poor absorption of phenytoin in dogs, it was concluded that the oral administration of phenytoin in dogs produces sub-therapeutic and erratic serum concentrations of phenytoin which makes its efficacy as an anti-convulsant questionable. 相似文献

The caecum and the adjacent 30 cm lengths of ileum and large colon of 201 horses from two different regions of Norway (Østlandet and Trøndelag) were examined for the presence ofAnoplocephala perfoliata. In all, 20% of the horses were infested with the cestode (27% in Østlandet and 7% in Trøndelag). The mean number of worms in infected horses from the two regions was 18 and 6, respectively.Information was obtained on the age, sex, breed, type of pasture and anthelmintic treatment after the grazing season for 183 of the 20 horses. The degree of infestation withA. perfoliata was not influenced by age, breed or sex. The odds ratio (confidence limits) for using permanent pastures that had been grazed by horses for at least the 5 last years in succession was 8.8 (3.2–24.4). There was a significantly higher prevalence ofA. perfoliata infestation in Østlandet (odds ratio 3.1 (1.1–9.1). The relatively low prevalence ofA. perfoliata infestation in Norwegian horses compared to the reported prevalences in other countries and the differences in the prevalence between Østlandet and Trøndelag are discussed. Gross pathological examination identified lesions such as mucosal thickening, hyperaemia and/or erosions. These lesions were found in all of the infected horses, compared with only 5% of the non-infected horses.Examination of faecal samples from 26 of the infected horses detected cestode eggs in only three cases. The intercondylar fossa is believed to play an important role in the pathology of cranial cruciate ligament rupture and therefore has received considerable attention in the last decade. Accurate radiographic imaging of the intercondylar fossa requires that the central x-ray beam pass through the center of the intercondylar "tunnel". The anatomy of the canine intercondylar fossa is similar to humans, however, the orientations of the intercondylar fossa's differ. Consequently, the positioning techniques described for humans are not appropriate for the dog. To pass through the center of the dog, intercondylar fossa, the central x-ray beam should be 12° (S.D. 1.7°) caudal from the femoral diaphysis in the sagittal plane and obliqued caudolateral to craniomedial 7° (S.D. 0.60°) (caudo78°proximo7° lateralcraniodistomedial oblique). Cross table positioning was used with the hip flexed and the radiograph cassette placed on the cranial surface of the stifle. However, superimposition of the tuber ischii and soft tissues caudal to the femur made 15° to 20° the best angle obtainable. There was not a significant difference (p = 0.17) in the notch width index between a 12° versus 20° angle of the central x-ray beam caudal to the femoral diaphysis, both with 7° of external rotation of the stifle. The notch width index of 0.252 obtained from radiographic measurements was not significantly different from measurements obtained grossly of 0.254 (n = 26; p = 0.69). Failure to oblique the central x-ray beam caused a significant (p = 0.0008) decrease in the apparent fossa width radiographically. 相似文献
