The origin of Galactic cosmic rays is a century-long puzzle. Indirect evidence points to their acceleration by supernova shockwaves, but we know little of their escape from the shock and their evolution through the turbulent medium surrounding massive stars. Gamma rays can probe their spreading through the ambient gas and radiation fields. The Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) has observed the star-forming region of Cygnus X. The 1- to 100-gigaelectronvolt images reveal a 50-parsec-wide cocoon of freshly accelerated cosmic rays that flood the cavities carved by the stellar winds and ionization fronts from young stellar clusters. It provides an example to study the youth of cosmic rays in a superbubble environment before they merge into the older Galactic population.  相似文献

The distribution of chemical elements in primitive meteorites (chondrites), as building blocks of terrestrial planets, provides insight into the formation and early differentiation of Earth. The processes that resulted in the depletion of some elements [such as chromium (Cr)] in the bulk silicate Earth relative to chondrites, however, remain debated between leading candidate causes: volatility versus core partitioning. We show through high-precision measurements of Cr stable isotopes in a range of meteorites, which deviate by up to ~0.4 per mil from those of the bulk silicate Earth, that Cr depletion resulted from its partitioning into Earth's core, with a preferential enrichment in light isotopes. Ab initio calculations suggest that the isotopic signature was established at mid-mantle magma ocean depth as Earth accreted planetary embryos and progressively became more oxidized.  相似文献

Binding of Sonic Hedgehog (Shh) to Patched (Ptc) relieves the latter's tonic inhibition of Smoothened (Smo), a receptor that spans the cell membrane seven times. This initiates signaling which, by unknown mechanisms, regulates vertebrate developmental processes. We find that two molecules interact with mammalian Smo in an activation-dependent manner: G protein-coupled receptor kinase 2 (GRK2) leads to phosphorylation of Smo, and beta-arrestin 2 fused to green fluorescent protein interacts with Smo. These two processes promote endocytosis of Smo in clathrin-coated pits. Ptc inhibits association of beta-arrestin 2 with Smo, and this inhibition is relieved in cells treated with Shh. A Smo agonist stimulated and a Smo antagonist (cyclopamine) inhibited both phosphorylation of Smo by GRK2 and interaction of beta-arrestin 2 with Smo. beta-Arrestin 2 and GRK2 are thus potential mediators of signaling by activated Smo.  相似文献

The objective of this preliminary study was to establish a reference range for plasma fructosamine concentration and fructosamine-albumin ratio in healthy ferrets and to compare these reference intervals to values obtained from hypoglycemic ferrets. Fructosamine concentration has been shown to reflect blood glucose concentration over the previous 1 to 2 weeks in other animal species, and may be a useful indicator of chronic hypoglycemia in ferrets diagnosed with insulinoma. Plasma fructosamine was measured with an automated colorimetric assay using nitroblue tetrazolium. Thirty-two clinically healthy and 5 hypoglycemic ferrets were included in the study. The reference interval in healthy ferrets for fructosamine was 110 (98 to 123) – 203 (191 to 218) μmol/L, and the reference interval for plasma fructosamine-albumin ratio was 5.1 (4.6 to 5.6) – 8.6 (8.2 to 9.0) μmol/g. Results for hypoglycemic ferrets were within the ranges for both fructosamine and fructosamine-albumin ratio. As there were no significant differences between the healthy and hypoglycemic ferrets, this study suggests that fructosamine concentration and fructosamine-albumin ratio are not likely to be useful in determining insulinoma-associated chronic hypoglycemia in ferrets.  相似文献

The objective of this work was to optimize a neural network (NN) for modelling potato tuber growth and its in-field variations in eastern Canada. In addition to climatic inputs, the cumulative and maximal leaf area index (LAI) were incorporated to account for in-field scale variability. Soil and genetic parameters were assumed to be integrated in LAI as suggested by earlier work. Each input and combination of inputs was evaluated from the changes they induced in MAE (mean absolute error) and RMSE (root mean square error). Results using data from several replicated on-farm experiments between 2005 and 2008 suggest that a NN model using cumulative solar radiation, cumulative rainfall and cumulative LAI can adequately model site-specific tuber growth. The MAE of the retained model was 209 kg DM ha−1, which represents less than 4% of the mean final tuber yield for the 3 years of the study. Non-linear effects of explicative variables on tuber yield were attested by comparing the results of the NN simulations to those of a multiple linear regression (MLR). The failure of MLR to simulate temporal discontinuities in tuber growth supports the use of a non-linear approach such as a NN to model tuber growth.  相似文献

We combine wavelet analysis and multiple null models to identify significant spatial scales of pattern and spatial boundaries in historical spruce budworm defoliation in Ontario, Canada. Previous analyses of budworm defoliation in Ontario over the last two outbreaks have suggested three distinct zones of defoliation. We asked the following three questions: (1) is there statistical support for the existence of these three zones? (2) Are the locations of these boundaries consistent between outbreak periods? And (3) how does boundary identification depend on the spatial null model used? Defoliation data for the two outbreak periods (1941–1965 and 1966–2001), and the combined period (1941–2001) were analyzed using a 1D continuous wavelet transform. Boundaries were identified through comparison of wavelet power spectra of each outbreak period to reference distributions based on three different spatial null models: (1) a complete spatial randomness model, (2) an autoregressive model, and (3) a Gaussian random field model. The Gaussian random field model identified coarser scales of pattern than the autoregressive model. Locally, the Gaussian random field model found significant boundaries similar to those previously described, whereas the autoregressive model only did so for the first outbreak. These results indicate that the coarse scale spatial factors that influenced defoliation were more consistent between outbreaks relative to fine scale factors, and that previously described boundaries were strongly driven by the first outbreak. Wavelet analysis combined with spatial null models provides a powerful tool for identifying non-arbitrary scales of structure and significant spatial boundaries in non-stationary ecological data.  相似文献

2,6-Dibromophenol (DBP) was reported as an auxin-like molecule using molecular quantum similarity measures. In this study, the auxin activity of this molecule and its chlorinated homologue is further determined using a bacterial biosensor: the auxin-inducible ipdC promoter of Azospirillum brasilense. We were able to demonstrate that DBP can induce gene expression, but to a lesser extent than the auxin indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and that DBP is not an antagonist for the IAA signalling pathway. To investigate the role of the bromine groups, the molecule 2,6-dichlorophenol (DCP) was also tested for gene expression induction. However, no induction could be observed. In a second part, DBP and other molecules were modelled in the auxin-binding pocket of the plant auxin receptor TIR1 to evaluate theoretical binding energies. Both DBP and its chlorinated homologue DCP are not strong ligands compared to other known auxins such as IAA. The importance of a carboxylated side chain for optimal binding (and probably auxin activity) was demonstrated.  相似文献

Although microbially-mediated redox environments can alter the characteristics of soil/sediment organic matter (SOM) and its interactions with persistent hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) bound to soils and sediments, the nature of their effects has not been adequately addressed. In this study, a field soil collected from a manufacturer gas plant site and contaminated historically with creosotes was incubated under aerobic and anoxic/anaerobic conditions along with various amendments (extra carbon and enrichment minerals) for stimulating microbial activities. Anaerobic conditions stimulated significant fractions of bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) encompassing naphthalene through benzo[g,h,i]perylene to be mobilized to the aqueous phase, leaving their aqueous phase concentrations far in excess of solubility (increases in their apparent aqueous phase concentrations by factors as high as 62.8 relative to their initial aqueous phase concentrations). Such effects became more evident for high molecular weight PAHs. Dissolved organic matter exhibiting a high affinity for PAHs was liberated from soils during the anaerobic soil incubations. Feasibility of this concept for field applications was evaluated with a lab-scale continuous flow system composed of an anaerobic soil column followed by an aerobic bioreactor inoculated with PAH-degrading microbes. High quantities of PAHs exceeding their aqueous solubilities were eluted from the anaerobic soil column and those mobilized PAHs were readily bioavailable in the secondary aerobic bioreactor. This study may offer a potential method for cost-effective and performance-efficient ex situ remediation technologies (or in situ if appropriate hydrological control available in the contaminated field site) and risk assessment for the HOC-contaminated soils/sediments.  相似文献
