Angiosperm fruiting axes were discovered from the Upper Jurassic of China. Angiosperms are defined by carpels enclosing ovules, a character demonstrated in this fossil. This feature is lacking in other fossils reported to be earliest angiosperms. The fruits are small follicles formed from conduplicate carpels helically arranged. Adaxial elongate stigmatic crests are conspicuous on each carpel. The basal one-third of the axes bore deciduous organs of uncertain affinities. No scars of subtending floral organs are present to define the individual fertile parts as floral units, but the leaf-like structures subtending each axis define them as flowers. These fruiting axes have primitive characters and characters not considered primitive. 相似文献

Despite the many complexities concerning their initiation and propagation, forest fires exhibit power-law frequency-area statistics over many orders of magnitude. A simple forest fire model, which is an example of self-organized criticality, exhibits similar behavior. One practical implication of this result is that the frequency-area distribution of small and medium fires can be used to quantify the risk of large fires, as is routinely done for earthquakes. 相似文献

Establishment of the temperature-salinity relationship in the ocean has concerned oceanographers for decades because of its importance for understanding ocean circulation. High-resolution measurements in the ocean mixed layer are used to show that temperature and salinity gradients on horizontal scales of 20 meters to 10 kilometers tend to compensate in their effect on density. These observations support the notion of a horizontal mixing in the mixed layer that depends on density gradient. 相似文献

The study was designed to investigate the effect of four cycles of 5 weeks starvation followed by 10‐week refeeding compared with daily feeding under either natural photoperiod or continuous light (LL) regime on body composition and flesh quality in Atlantic cod in sea cages, northern Norway. The fish were sampled for body composition and flesh quality parameters at the start of the trial, twice at the end of a 10‐week feeding period and twice at the end of a 5‐week starvation period. There was effect of both feeding and light regime on growth, the two starving groups losing weight during starvation and regaining weight during refeeding, and the group under LL being heavier. But, the mean overall growth did not vary between groups. Starvation/refeeding regime resulted in higher slaughter yield, but no overall effect was seen on hepatosomatic index, water content, water holding capacity (WHC), muscle pH, hardness or flesh colour compared with control groups. Continuous light increased gutted weight and slaughter yield, lowered WHC and depressed maturation compared with fish under natural light regime. In order to test seasonal, rearing, maturing and anaerobic muscle activity effect on the flesh quality of turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) a total of 80 farmed turbot from three different strains from reared under natural or continuous light were killed by a
percussive blow to the head in November (winter, Icelandic strain), March (spring, Portuguese strain) and June (summer, domesticated
strain (France turbot)). To test the effect of anaerobic muscle activity, 10 fish were on each occasion pre rigor filleted, where one fillet was used as a control, while the other fillet was electrically stimulated using a squared 5 Hz,
10 V pulsed DC for 3 min. All pre rigor fillets were measured for pH, weighed, wrapped in aluminum foil and stored in polystyrene boxes with ice. After 7 days of
storage the fillets were measured instrumentally for pH, drip loss, colour (CIE L* a* b*) and texture properties such as hardness and shear force, while fillet shrinkage and colour (RBG) were evaluated with computer
imaging on photographs from a standard lightbox. Results showed that softness of the flesh was mainly influenced by factors
associated with growth, such as season, photoperiod and maturation. Anaerobic muscle activity simulated with electrical stimulation
caused an increase in drip loss (<1%) and loss of shear force (<4%), but had no effect on hardness or fillet shrinkage. Computer
imaging revealed that muscle contractions related to the electrical stimulus forced out blood from the fillet causing less
reddishness for the entire storage period. We conclude that a pH drop upon slaughter associated with anaerobic muscle activity

In the present study, selected temperature drops were examined to investigate the effects of live chilling on stress and welfare in turbot and sole. This study demonstrated that rapid temperature drops from 11°C–12°C and 18°C–18.7°C to 4°C–0°C in turbot resulted in higher blood sodium and potassium at 0°C (164 mmol l?1, 4.4 mmol ?1) compared to 4°C (153 mmol l?1, 3.1 mmol ?1), indicating osmoregulatory disturbance. A rapid temperature drop from 18°C to 0°C in Senegal sole also resulted in higher blood sodium and potassium at 0°C (164 mmol l?1, 4.8 mmol ?1) compared to the control group at 18°C (157 mmol l?1, 3.2 mmol ?1). Based on present findings, we conclude that immersion in ice water will have a negative effect on the animal osmoregulatory capacity, and we recommend that turbot and sole are stunned before slaughter. 相似文献

We compared growth properties of spotted wolffish with initial mean weight (± SE) 3.65 (± 0.15) kg reared in shallow raceways at three different densities (50, 70, and 90 kg/m2, corresponding to approx. 170, 240, and 310 kg/m3) in a 447‐day‐long growth trial at ambient temperature (mean (± SD), 4.2 C ± 1.9). Growth in all three groups was comparable, but there was a trend toward higher growth at the highest density. Final mean weights (kg ± SE) were 4.90 (± 0.15), 4.80 (± 0.16), and 5.05 (± 0.11), at the 50, 70, and 90 kg/m2 density, respectively. Initially, growth rates were higher at the 90 kg/m2 density group compared to the two other densities, but overall growth rates were similar in all three groups. Feed conversion efficiency differed and was higher at the two highest densities compared to lowest density. The acid–base balance was influenced by the density treatment as there was a general trend toward higher partial pressure of CO2 and HCO in the 90 kg/m2 group. Calculated productivity increased almost linearly with increasing stocking density and was found to be 24, 42, and 66 g/m2/day at 50, 70, and 90 kg/m2, respectively. The results show that the optimum density conditions for farming large spotted wolffish, both with respect to growth rate, feed conversion, and productivity are at densities equal to or higher than 90 kg/m2. 相似文献

Investigation of the physiological effects of live chilling in Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar, has been performed in two experiments. In the first, fish (mean weight 840 g) acclimatized to either 16, 8, or 4°C were
directly transferred horizontally or vertically (9 combinations) to water temperatures of 16, 8, 4, or 0°C using a dip net.
Blood samples were collected at 1 and 6 h (h) post-transfer. In the second experiment, fish (mean weight 916 g) acclimatized
to 16°C were exposed to four temperature-drop regimes (no physical handling): 16–4°C (over 5 h), 16–4°C (over 1 h), 16–0°C
(over 5 h), and 16–0°C (over 1 h). Blood samples were collected 1 h post-temperature drop. Physical transfers in the first
trial, i.e., temperature drops, resulted in immediate (1 h) increases in blood lactate concentrations at all three temperatures,
but levels were significantly reduced and close to pre-transfer levels after 6 h. Horizontal transfers, i.e., 16–16°C, 8–8°C,
and 4–4°C, resulted in similar increases and were not significantly different from the groups exposed to temperature drops.
The most severe vertical transfer (16-0) resulted in a swift loss of equilibrium and eventually death. In experiment 2, temperature
drops from 16 to 4°C and from 16 to 0°C over a period of one or 5 h, without physically handling the fish, resulted in no
significant increases in any of the measured parameters 1 h post-transfer, except in the 16–0 (1 h) group. The latter experienced
a significant increase in blood sodium, glucose, lactate, and cortisol levels compared to all other groups. The results suggest
that salmon are capable of tolerating relatively steep temperature drops without any significant negative effects on blood
stress parameters and that physical stress from handling overrides the effect of thermal insults. 相似文献

The effects of chronic and periodic peaks of un-ionised ammonia (UIA-N) exposure on eye health and cataract formation in juvenile
Atlantic halibut, Hippoglossus hippoglossus, were examined. Fish with mean initial weight 51.7 g (SD 13.2) were exposed to five treatments consisting of control group
and three groups (ChronicLow, ChronicMedium and ChronicHigh,) chronically exposed with UIA-N of 0.06, 0.12 to 0.17 mg/l, respectively,
for 62 days at 11.9°C, pH 8.0 and salinity 34‰. Furthermore, a fifth group (HighPulse) was exposed to the same high levels
as ChronicHigh for a short daily period (peak of 15 mg/l 30 min after exposure, 10 mg/l 1 h after exposure and 1.2 mg/l 3 h
after exposure). In the subsequent period of the experimental study (from day 63 until day 100), no ammonia was added to the
water. Mean weights were significantly lower in groups exposed to chronically high ambient ammonia concentrations compared
to corresponding control group throughout the experimental period. The sampled fish exhibited signs of mild cataract formation,
although the results showed no clear evidence that the ammonia treatments contributed to differences. Minor differences were
found in measured muscle free amino acids, which could be used to explain potential changes in buffering capacity. The eye
histidine status differed significantly at day 62, and osmotic differences in the eye lenses (measured as differences in N-acetyl
histidine) were found in all group exposed to chronic levels of ammonia. 相似文献

Juvenile Atlantic cod, Gadus morhua, that had been fed rotifers as larvae (R group) had significantly lower growth rates (SGR) at high-ambient ammonia (UIA?=?115?C120???g?l?1) than did juveniles that had been first fed with natural zooplankton (Z group). Overall specific growth rates (SGRs) were 5?C11% higher in the Z group at the control ammonia (UIA?=?1?C2???g?l?1) treatments. An interaction between larval rearing history, oxygen and ammonia levels was found, as SGR decreased with decreasing oxygen levels at high ammonia in the R group, while the SGR in the Z group were less affected by hypoxia. At high-ambient ammonia, the SGRs were 5% (mild hyperoxia, 101?C104% O2 in effluent water), 28% (normoxia, 83?C88% O2 in effluent water) and 86% (hypoxia, 57?C69% O2 in effluent water) higher in the Z group, compared to the R group. The present findings indicate that larval rearing environment could influence the adaptability to environmental changes and growth performance during later juvenile stage in cod.
