The side-effects of anabolic steroid implants on mammary gland ultrastructure were evaluated in female lambs treated with oestradiol (n = 10) and with oestradiol plus trenbolone acetate (n = 10). Ten non-implanted lambs were used as controls. Apart from the ultrastructural study of the mammary gland, an assessment of the prolactin pituitary cell population was carried out by immunological methods. Our results showed that oestrogenic implants exert stimulating effects on mammary gland development, both by activating the synthesis process at mammary gland cell levels and by increasing prolactin pituitary production. Nevertheless, there was no evidence of secretory products in the lumen of the gland. Implants containing trenbolone acetate counteracted the mammary stimulus of oestrogens showing ultrastructural images of cell autolysis and necrosis.  相似文献

Three wheat flours, hard red winter (HRW), hard white winter (HWW) and soft red winter (SRW), were fractionated by sieving into four different particle size fractions, <38, 38–53, 53–75, and >75 μm. The medium fractions, 38–53 and 53–75 μm, of the HRW and HWW wheat had higher protein contents than the finest and coarsest fractions. The finest fractions had the highest levels of damaged starch. Tortillas made from the medium fractions of HRW and HWW, especially the 53–75 μm fraction, had longer rupture distance and better foldability. The finest fraction yielded tortillas with shorter rupture distance and worse foldability. Fractionation by flour particle size slightly affected protein composition of the flour. Size exclusion-high performance liquid chromatography (SE-HPLC) analyses showed that the compositions of SRW wheat proteins were significantly different from those of HRW and HWW wheat proteins. SRW had more low molecular weight (LMW) and less high molecular weight (HMW) protein than HRW and HWW had. The <38 μm fractions of HRW and HWW had more LMW proteins than other fractions. The amount of LMW proteins of flours correlated negatively with the rupture distance and foldability of tortillas. Particle size of the flours was the major factor affecting the tortilla texture.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo determine the minimal electrical threshold (MET) necessary to elicit appropriate muscle contraction when the tip of an insulated needle is positioned epidurally or intrathecally at the L5-6 intervertebral space (phase-I) and to determine whether the application of a fixed electrical current during its advancement could indicate needle entry into the intrathecal space (phase-II) in dogs.Study designProspective, blinded study.AnimalsThirteen (phase-I) and seventeen (phase-II) dogs, scheduled for a surgical procedure where L5-6 intrathecal administration was indicated.MethodsUnder general anesthesia, an insulated needle was first inserted into the L5-6 epidural space and secondly into the intrathecal space and the MET necessary to obtain a muscular contraction of the pelvic limb or tail at each site was determined (phase-I). Under similar conditions, in dogs of phase-II an insulated needle was inserted through the L5-6 intervertebral space guided by the use of a fixed electrical current (0.8 mA) until muscular contraction of the pelvic limb or tail was obtained. Intrathecal needle placement was confirmed by either free flow of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) or myelography.ResultsThe current required to elicit a motor response was significantly lower (p < 0.0001) when the tip of the needle was in the intrathecal space (0.48 ± 0.10 mA) than when it was located epidurally (2.56 ± 0.57). The use of a fixed electrical stimulation current of 0.8 mA resulted in correct prediction of intrathecal injection, corroborated by either free flow of CSF (n = 12) or iohexol distribution pattern (n = 5), in 100% of the cases.Conclusion and clinical relevanceNerve stimulation may be employed as a tool to distinguish epidural from intrathecal insulated needle position at the L5-6 intervertebral space in dogs. This study demonstrates the feasibility of using an electrical stimulation test to confirm intrathecal needle position in dogs.  相似文献

Development of pyrethroid resistance in Haematobia irritans in Santa Fe province, Argentina, resulted in an increased use of pyrethroid insecticides, probably due to lack of suitable alternative treatments. We explored the efficacy of mixtures of cypermethrin and piperonyl butoxide (PBO) against pyrethroid-resistant H. irritans. Groups of 25 Holstein cows each, naturally infested with cypermethrin resistant H. irritans were assigned to treated or control groups in April, September, October and December 1997. Cattle in treated groups were medicated with pour-on oil formulations of 5% cypermethrin (dose = 4 mg per kg of body weight) with 5% or 10% PBO in April, and with a mixture containing 5% of both components thereafter. Efficacy was tested for 21 days after treatment. A treatment of 5% cypermethrin pour-on without PBO was evaluated in October 1997. Samples of horn flies were obtained before September, October and December treatments and exposed for 2 h to filter papers impregnated with different cypermethrin concentrations to determine the 50% lethal concentration (LC50). No difference in efficacy was found between cypermethrin pour-on formulations with 5% or 10% of PBO (more than 94% efficacy on day 21 after treatment). Efficacy of 5 % cypermethrin-5% PBO mixture decreased rapidly in the successive treatments (less than 40% efficacy was observed on day 21 after the December treatment), and the period after treatment with an efficacy higher than 95% was 14 days for the treatment carried out in April, 10 days in September; 7 days for the treatment performed in October and 4 days for the December treatment. The LC50 of cypermethrin was 36.6 microg per cm2 in September and increased to 116.6 and 226.1 microg per cm2 in October and December, respectively. It is concluded that the addition of PBO to cypermethrin did not provide a treatment that would give a long term control of pyrethroid resistant-horn flies.  相似文献

The potential of soya protein concentrate (SPC) as an alternative protein source in diets for Totoaba macdonaldi juveniles was evaluated. Seven isonitrogenous and isolipidic diets were formulated containing 15–100% SPC (SPC15, SPC30, SPC45, SPC60, SPC75, SPC90 and SPC100) to replace fishmeal (FM‐protein), and a FM‐protein‐based diet without SPC was used as a reference diet (RD). Each diet was randomly assigned to triplicate groups of 20 totoaba (50 ± 1.0 g) and was fed twice daily to apparent satiation. After 60 days of experiment, effects on totoaba were evaluated. Growth performance in fish fed RD to SPC45 was similar. The maximum FM‐protein replacement for weight gain (g kg ABW?1 day?1) was estimated to be 34.17% using a broken‐line model. In vitro digestibility of fish fed RD, SPC15 and SPC30 was similar. Trypsin activity was higher in fish fed the RD (9.38 ± 0.52 mU × 10?3 mg protein?1. Chymotrypsin activity was similar in fish fed RD, SPC15 and SPC30. Activity of alkaline protease and phosphatase was similar in fish fed RD, SPC15 and SPC30. Red blood cells (RBC) were the highest in fish fed RD to SPC60. Fish fed the RD, SPC15 and SPC30 present the highest haematocrit (HT) and haemoglobin (HB) content. Diets SPC90 and SPC100 presented similar MCV and MCHC. Total protein (TP) profile overall decreased in fish fed SPC90 and SPC100, pointing to nutritional hypoproteinemia due to deficient digestion and absorption. These results indicate that SPC‐based diets could be used efficiently by totoaba with FM‐protein replacement of less than 45%.  相似文献

Studies in cage‐cultured fish have reported spatial and temporal variations on parasite prevalence; however, most of these studies have been carried out in cold water and marine environments. Channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, is the main floating cages‐raised species used in intensive fish culture in Tamaulipas. In Mexico, there are no seasonal reports on fish parasites in this type of cage system. The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence and mean intensity of ectoparasites of cage‐cultured channel catfish in a year. Fish were sampled bimonthly from six locations in Tamaulipas and measured and evaluated for ectoparasites. Results showed the presence of two gill‐dwelling metazoans, Ligictaluridus floridanus and Ergasilus cerastes and one skin‐dwelling protozoan, Trichodina sp.; a pattern characterized by peaks in prevalence in early autumn for L. floridanus and late autumn for E. cerastes was observed. In addition, geographic location had a significant effect on the prevalence of L. floridanus and E. cerastes. It was also observed that presence of these parasites was not associated with any fish mortality. To our knowledge, this is the first seasonal study on ectoparasite prevalence on channel catfish reared in cages in México.  相似文献

We studied the effect of steeping time on various physical and chemical properties of maize flour prepared by the traditional nixtamalization process as well as in oversaturated calcium ion conditions. The calcium content of the corn flour was measured by atomic absorption spectroscopy and was correlated with X‐ray diffraction, viscosity, and pH measurements. Calcium content of the flour showed a nonlinear dependence on steeping time, with a local calcium maximum occurring at ≈7 hr. The pH level of the corn flour increased with steeping time, thus roughly following the time trend shown by the steeping time dependence of the calcium content. Flour crystallinity and peak viscosity of water suspensions of the flour reached maximal values at ≈7–9 hr of steeping, in agreement with manufacturing experience showing that these are appropriate steeping times to prepare tortillas with the desirable rheological and organoleptic properties.  相似文献

The effects of repeated cloprostenol administration were compared in mares impregnated by horses and mares impregnated by donkeys in order to assess the role of eCG on the development of pregnancy‐associated resistance to the luteolytic and abortifacient effects of PGF2α. Eleven mares impregnated by donkey (mule pregnancy) and 9 mares impregnated by horse (horse pregnancy) were used. Six mares with mule pregnancy and four with horse pregnancy were injected with cloprostenol (0.25 mg) when they were between day 65 and day 75 of pregnancy, and the treatment was repeated 48, 72 and 96 h latter. The rest of the mares remained as controls. Concentrations of eCG were 10 times higher (p < 0.001) in mares impregnated by horses than in mares impregnated by donkeys, and they were not affected by cloprostenol treatment. Luteolysis was completed 30 h after the first cloprostenol injection in mule pregnancies, while mares with horse pregnancies required 96 h and three cloprostenol injections to complete luteolysis. Regression analysis revealed significant associations between eCG concentrations at time 0 and the time required for completion of luteolysis (p < 0.001), foetal death (p < 0.01) and foetal expulsion (p < 0.05). It is concluded that high eCG concentrations in mares impregnated by horses protect the corpora lutea of pregnancy against the luteolytic effects of PGF2α. Low eCG concentrations in mares carrying mule foetuses afford them less protection against the luteolytic effect of PGF2α, and this may be a cause of the increased foetal mortality that occurs between days 60 and 90 of pregnancy in these mares.  相似文献
