1. A modern hybrid strain of laying hen (Hisex) was fed from point of lay to 68 weeks on a control diet and diets containing oystershell, fluoride, 1,25‐dihydroxycholecalciferol, ascorbic acid, a lower concentration of phosphorus and a combination of a lower concentration of crude protein and higher concentration of vitamin K. Hens from a much older strain (Brown Leghorn J‐line) were fed on the control diet.
2. Plasma variables were measured during lay. End‐of‐lay trabecular and medullary bone volumes in the proximal tarsometatarsus and free thoracic vertebra were measured by histomorphometry.
3. The majority of Hisex hens were considered to be osteoporotic by the end of lay. In contrast, none of the J‐line were osteoporotic.
4. None of the nutritional treatments affected trabecular bone volumes. Medullary bone volumes were increased significantly by feeding oystershell or fluoride.
5. There was no phenotypic correlation between egg production and trabecular bone volume in the Hisex hens.
6. The experiment provided evidence that osteoporosis in laying hens, as assessed by trabecular bone volumes, is not caused by calcium deficiency and could not be prevented by any of the nutritional treatments studied. 相似文献
The production performance of herbage‐fed animals is affected by herbage voluntary dry‐matter intake (VDMI) and organic matter digestibility. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of herbage mass (HM) on in vivo herbage voluntary intake and digestibility in sheep. The three HM treatments were as follows: 1,100 kg dry matter (DM)/ha (low, L), 2,300 kg DM/ha (medium, M) and 3,700 kg DM/ha (high, H). The study was a Latin square design, repeated on two occasions in 2012: 24 May to 20 July (summer) and 21 July to 5 October (autumn). Twelve Texel wether sheep (individually housed) were offered fresh cut perennial ryegrass herbage for ad libitum consumption. Using the total faecal collection method, the digestibility of dry matter, organic matter, neutral detergent fibre and acid detergent fibre was determined. In summer, L had a similar VDMI to M and both had a higher VDMI than H. In autumn, L had a higher VDMI than both M and H. For dry‐matter digestibility and organic matter digestibility, there was no significant difference between L and M, which were both higher than H. For every 1% increase in neutral detergent fibre digestibility, VDMI increased by 0.03 kg. In the zero‐grazing scenario examined, offering low (1,100 kg DM/ha) HM swards enabled animals to achieve high intakes of highly digestible herbage, which should ensure high animal production performance. 相似文献
An outbreak of chronic cryptosporidiosis resulting in hypertrophic gastritis occurred in a captive colony of Australian elapid snakes. Two species of the genus Notechiswere involved: Notechis ***ater(Black Tiger Snake) and Notechis scutatus (Eastern or Mainland Tiger Snake). The infection was eventually fatal in all 9 affected snakes. Typical histopathological findings of the stomach included mucosal thickening with cystic dilatation of gastric glands, moderate oedema and fibrosis of the lamina propria, and a mild to moderate patchy infiltration of inflammatory cells. Procedures implemented to contain the outbreak included the use of a formaldehyde-based disinfectant, prompt removal of faecal matter, uneaten and regurgitated food from enclosures, and examination of faecal specimens for Cryptosporidium oocysts and other pathogens. 相似文献
Birch seedlings on which mycorrhizas of different fungi (primary inoculants) were established in aseptic conditions were transplanted into pots of brown earth supplemented with inocula of other mycorrhizal fungi (secondary inoculants) in a glasshouse study. Leccinum scabrum and Amanita muscaria did not persist as primary inoculants after transplanting seedlings to soil, and did not colonize as secondary inoculants, irrespective of the presence of other mycorrhizal fungi. Lactarius pubescens persisted poorly as a primary inoculant after transplanting and did not colonize seedlings as a secondary inoculant in soil; however, Lactarius-type mycorrhizas sometimes developed from naturally occurring inoculum in soil, especially after seedlings had been subjected to dormancy. Hebeloma sacchariolens and Thelephora terrestris persisted and spread as primary inoculants after transplanting and also colonized seedlings as secondary inoculants. These fungi apparently competed with one another, H. sacchariolens being dominant in a brown earth; but H. sacchariolens was ineffective as either primary or secondary inoculant in sphagnum peat, whereas T. terrestris formed abundant mycorrhizas in peat. Two isolates of Paxillus involutus behaved differently from one another: one isolate did not persist as a primary inoculant and did not colonize as a secondary inoculant whereas the other isolate did not persist as a primary inoculant but colonized seedlings extensively as a secondary inoculant in soil.The results demonstrate important and predictable behavioural differences between mycorrhizal fungi that have been termed “early-stage” and “late-stage” in mycorrhizal sequences on birch. Only early-stage mycorrhizal types were suitable for artificial inoculation of seedlings; they influenced subsequent colonization by some other mycorrhizal fungi but did not facilitate colonization by late-stage types typical of mature tree stands. 相似文献
ABSTRACTThe objective is to determine the growth, yield and chemical characteristics of pearl millet irrigated with different levels of brackish water and organic matter in two cultivation cycles. The experimental design was randomized blocks in a 4 × 4 factorial arrangement, composed of 4 levels of brackish irrigation (25, 50, 75 and 100% evapotranspiration), 4 levels of organic matter (0, 15, 30 and 45 t ha?1) with 3 repetitions. Along two cultivation cycles, pearl millet crop was analyzed for: plant growth variables, fresh and dry mass production, water-use efficiency, and chemical composition. There was significant interaction between applied water levels and organic matter for lignin in the 2nd cut (P < .05). The number of leaves, number of dead leaves and fresh mass production were influenced by the isolated effect of brackish water levels in cut 1 (P < .05). In turn, fresh mass production, dry mass production, plant height, leaves length, panicle length, fresh mass production, crude protein and ether extract were influenced by the isolated effect of saline water levels in the 2nd cut (P < .05). Growth, biomass production and chemical composition variables in second cut are positively influenced by different brackish irrigation levels under low rainfall conditions. 相似文献

The sirtuins are members of the histone deacetylase family of proteins that participate in a variety of cellular functions and play a role in aging. We identified a potent inhibitor of sirtuin 2 (SIRT2) and found that inhibition of SIRT2 rescued alpha-synuclein toxicity and modified inclusion morphology in a cellular model of Parkinson's disease. Genetic inhibition of SIRT2 via small interfering RNA similarly rescued alpha-synuclein toxicity. Furthermore, the inhibitors protected against dopaminergic cell death both in vitro and in a Drosophila model of Parkinson's disease. The results suggest a link between neurodegeneration and aging. 相似文献
