Alterations in heart valve development represent more than 20% of congenital cardiovascular malformations. Most of the functional properties of heart valves depend on extracellular matrix. Despite its relevance, little is known about fibrillar components on developing stages. Our objective is to define histological changes on valves fibrillar components in late embryonic development of Mus musculus. We found type III collagen as the predominant fibre type in the ECM in prenatal stages followed by a switch to a type I predominance for postnatal ages. The change in fibrillar components is necessary to support the normal mechanical function of adult heart valves.  相似文献

1. Hatching success of ostrich eggs is poor (50–60% of fertile eggs). The current study was designed to identify the timing of key stages in the development of the ostrich embryo.

2. Growth of both embryo and wing length during 42 d of incubation was comparable and approximately linear, with a more or less weekly doubling in size up to 35 d of incubation.

3. The embryo eye size increased more rapidly than beak length and reached a maximum of ~16.2 mm by 28 d of incubation, whereas beak length increased continuously until hatching at 42 d.

4. Linear regression equations were derived from morphometric measurements of embryos between 7 and 42 d.

5. Information stemming from these results can be used to estimate the age of dead-in-shell embryos in an attempt to identify timing of incubation problems that potentially result in low hatchability of fertile eggs.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo determine the cardiovascular effects of lidocaine infused intravenously (IV) in broiler chickens.Study designTwo phase study: Phase 1, randomized up-and-down study to determine effective dose 50 (ED50) for lidocaine; Phase 2, prospective randomized study to determine the cardiovascular effects of lidocaine.AnimalsSeventeen Ross-708 broiler chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus) [11 chickens (Phase 1) and 6 chickens (Phase 2)], weighing 2.6–4.3 kg.MethodsAfter induction of anesthesia with isoflurane and placement of monitoring equipment including invasive blood pressure, chickens were administered lidocaine IV. During Phase 1, using an up-and-down design, each animal received a variable dose selected based on the response of the previous animal. During Phase 2, each animal was administered 6 mg kg−1 of lidocaine IV over 2 minutes. Clinically irrelevant cardiovascular effects were defined as a relative decrease of heart rate (HR) and mean blood pressure (MAP) <30% subsequent to IV lidocaine administration. The ED50 was defined as the dose rate that would cause clinically irrelevant cardiovascular depression in 50% of the population.ResultsDuring Phase 1, using an up-and-down study design (n = 11), the ED50 of lidocaine was determined to be 6.30 mg kg−1 and 6.22 mg kg−1 (95% confidence interval, 5.30–7.13 mg kg−1), when calculated by Dixon's up-and-down method, and logistic regression, respectively. During Phase 2, following infusion of lidocaine (6 mg kg−1), no clinically relevant effects on HR or MAP were detected in any animal.Conclusions and clinical relevancePrevious reports state that the dose of lidocaine used in birds should be =4 mg kg−1. In this study, 6 mg kg−1 of lidocaine injected IV was not associated with adverse cardiovascular effects. These results suggest that the dose of 4 mg kg−1 can be exceeded, at least in chickens, and opens the possibility of other therapeutic uses for lidocaine in birds.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between body-condition score and postpartum reproductive efficiency in dairy cattle. Data on body-condition score, reproduction, diseases, and production from 1404 lactations of 639 cows, calving between January 1984 and November 1996 on a commercial farm, were used. The Cox proportional-hazards model with time-dependent covariates was used to qualify the relationship between body-condition score on a scale of 1 to 5 and risks of first insemination and pregnancy. Cows with body condition at calving <3 had lower first-insemination risks. Loss of body-condition score between calving and 45 days after calving was associated with increased days open and days-to-first insemination. Cows with body-condition scores <2 after Day 45 and before first insemination were less likely to be inseminated and become pregnant compared with cows that had higher body condition. Milk yield, mastitis, lameness, milk fever and genital infection were associated with a reduction in reproductive efficiency. The results indicated that loss of body-condition and actual body-condition scores before conception or first insemination or both can be used as a prognosis for days open and days-to-first insemination in dairy herds.  相似文献

A 6-year-old male, Belgian shepherd dog was presented with lethargy, oliguria, hematuria, and reluctance to move. The dog developed hypertrophic osteopathy secondary to renal pelvis transitional cell carcinoma. A nephrectomy was performed and after a year, the dog was completely asymptomatic, and no evidence of metastatic disease was present.  相似文献

The study aimed to describe the Bubalus bubalis seminal plasma proteome using a label‐free shotgun UDMSE approach. A total of 859 nonredundant proteins were identified across five biological replicates with stringent identification. Proteins specifically related to sperm maturation and protection, capacitation, fertilization and metabolic activity were detected in the buffalo seminal fluid. In conclusion, we provide a comprehensive proteomic profile of buffalo seminal plasma, which establishes a foundation for further studies designed to understand regulation of sperm function and discovery of novel biomarkers for fertility. The objective of this research is to examine the extent to which phylogenetic and geographical drivers of rarity may interact to help us better predict distributions of rare taxa. This information is useful to conservation biologists when considering plans for the effective capture of biological diversity within reserve systems. We use 33 floras, distributed globally among five biomes, to assess pattern of rarity across taxonomic group size for plants. We show that small plant families (1-10 taxa) contain consistently fewer rare taxa than expected, while rare plants are proportionately over-represented in large plant families (>100 taxa). We also examine the distribution of species within families. The degree to which species are inequitably distributed among families varied systematically across floristic biomes. Mediterranean floras, in particular, are characterized by a greater than expected fraction of their species pool concentrated within large families, suggesting a high propensity for rarity simply by virtue of having a higher proportion of their constituent taxa within groups with a high likelihood of rarity. Finally, an analysis of a suite of floras using a common system of identifying rarity shows that the fraction of species within floras that are rare is predicted both by flora size and by a general metric (the Gini coefficient) of inequality among family sizes. Together, these patterns suggest a high degree of predictability in the distribution of rarity in plants that may reflect underlying natural speciation and extinction processes.  相似文献

The aquands found in southern Chile are derived from volcanic ash and contain high levels of organic matter. Due to the presence of an impermeable stratum, they have shallow soil profiles, which induce waterlogging for several months each year. These fragile soils, locally known as ‘Ñadi’, cover an area of 475 000 hectares and have undergone intensive land use changes, which have affected the soil physical properties. These are still not well understood but are relevant for the design of efficient drainage systems. The aim of this research was to analyse the impact of the land use change in Ñadi soils on the spatial and temporal variability of their soil physical properties. For the land use change from secondary native forest (sNF) to naturalized grassland (NG), the effective soil depth was measured at defined points. Time‐ and space‐dependent changes of water‐table depth and penetration resistance were recorded. Volumetric water content and soil temperature were measured with sensors installed at three depths and the water retention curve and air permeability at these depths were also determined. The changes in land use over time have induced a reduction in soil depth. Soils under NG showed a smaller soil water storage capacity, air capacity and permeability compared with soils under sNF, as well as waterlogging during winter and greater mechanical strength and soil profile temperatures during summer. Therefore, the land use change affected the spatial and temporal variability of soil physical functions across the field.  相似文献
