Large wood (LW) is critical to the structure and function of streams and forests are the main LW source to stream channels. To assess the influence of forest cover changes at different spatial scales on in-stream LW quantity, we selected eighteen catchments (2nd–4th order) in Southeastern Brazil with forests at different levels of alterations. In each catchment we quantified the pattern of forest cover (% cover and relative catchment position), the physical characteristics of catchments (elevation and slope), the characteristics of channels (wetted channel width and depth), the abundance and volume of in-stream LW, and the frequency of LW pools. We used simple and multiple linear regression to assess the response of LW variables to landscape and stream reach variables. Most of the LW was relatively small; 72 % had a diameter <20 cm, and 66 % had a length <5 m. Although percent forest cover at reach scale had substantial support to explain LW variables, the best predictors of LW variables were forest cover at broader scales (LW abundance and LW pool frequency were best predicted by forest at intermediate distance at the catchment scale and LW volume was best predicted by forest cover at the drainage network scale), suggesting that downstream transport is an important process in addition to local processes in our study area. These findings have important management implications because although low forested reaches receive less LW from local forests (or no LW in the case of deforested stream reaches), they are receiving LW from upstream forested reaches. However, the material is generally small, unstable and likely to be easily flushed. This suggests that not only should riparian forest conservation encompass the full drainage network, but forests should also be allowed to regenerate to later successional stages to provide larger, higher quality LW for natural structuring of streams. 相似文献

The effects of different Mediterranean vegetation cover on the biological and biochemical quality of soil is not well understood. The aim of this work is to evaluate the effects that different types of vegetation (forestry plots, mainly dominated by Spanish black pine (Pinus nigra Arn. ssp salzmannii) and herbaceous plots, where overstorey density is lower and natural herbaceous percentage is higher than in forestry plots) have in the biological properties of soil in Mediterranean humid climate. The impact of these plant communities on the biological soil quality was determined by several sensitive parameters related to the microbial activity of the soil such as soil respiration and some enzyme activities (urease, phosphatase and dehydrogenase). Development of vegetation (herbaceous and pines) was also determined and correlated with microbiological and biochemical indicators. Organic matter content in herbaceous sites was significantly higher than in forestry sites, ranging from 5.27 to 6.70 g 100 g?1 in herbaceous sites to 1.64–2.81 g 100 g?1 in forested areas. Herbaceous sites showed higher values of basal respiration and dehydrogenase activity than pine areas. However, the decrease of organic carbon content in pine areas led microbial activity enrichment per unit of carbon. These results conclude that vegetation cover significantly impacts soil microbial processes in Mediterranean humid climates, herbaceous vegetation having a more positive influence than forest vegetation on the biochemical and microbial activity of the soil, principally due to the higher accumulation of organic matter from plant remains. 相似文献

Background Acid mine drainage (AMD) results from the exposure of sulfide materials to atmospheric water and oxygen. In addition to AMD,
oxidation of arsenopyrite and other As-bearing sulfides can release arsenic (As) into the environment. In view of the risk
to living organisms due to contamination of ground and surface water sources with As, this work was carried out to evaluate
the effectiveness of lime (CaCO3) in controlling the dispersion of this metalloid in the environment.
Methods Partially oxidized samples of sulfide bearing materials from gold mines in Brazil were used to evaluate the arsenic mobilization
by leaching tests. Columns containing ground samples, with and without liming treatments, were leached with distilled water
every two weeks over a 156-day period.
Results and Discussion The acid-base accounting (ABA) static tests classified the samples as potential acid forming materials. In the treatments
without liming, As, Fe and S concentrations in the leachates were higher than after treatment with carbonate. Nevertheless,
the effectiveness of liming and As mobilization were lower in the sample containing goethite. A high correlation between Fe
and As concentrations in the leachates (r=0.749) suggests that iron (hydr)oxides retained arsenic in the solid phase. Oxidation
rates of As bearing sulfides were increased at low pH (2.0–3.9), probably due to the enhanced activity of bacteria (Acidithiobacillus) and decreased rate of Fe precipitation, thus reinforcing generation of acid water, and consequently releasing As.
Conclusions and Perspectives Our results corroborate the use of lime to control the dispersion of As in AMD-affected environments. However, the effectiveness
of the liming treatment seems to be dependent on the presence of iron (hydr)oxides in the sample. These findings can be useful
to remediate areas affected by acid mine drainage and arsenic mobilization in partially oxidized sulfide materials.

Early forecasting of fruit orchard yield is important for market planning and for growers and exporters to plan labour, bins,
storage and purchase of packing materials. Large variations in tree yield pose a challenge for accurate yield estimation.
We evaluated a three-level systematic sampling procedure for unbiased estimation of fruit number for yield forecasts. In the
Spring of 2009 we estimated the total number of fruit in several rows of each of 14 commercial fruit orchards growing apple
(11 groves), kiwifruit (two groves), and table grapes (one grove) in central Chile. Survey times were 10–100 min for apples
(depending on vigour), 85 min for the table grapes, and 85 and 150 min for the kiwifruit. During harvest in the Fall, the
fruit were counted to obtain the true number. Yields ranged from lows of several thousand (grape bunches), to highs of more
than 40 000 fruit (apples, kiwifruit). Absolute true errors (defined as the absolute difference between the estimate and the
true value, divided by the true value) were less than 5% in six orchards, between 5 and 10% in a further five orchards and
13% in one orchard. In two apple orchards we obtained absolute true errors of about 20%. Error analysis based on systematic
sub-sampling across each sampling stage was used to determine how to distribute sampling effort to achieve a total coefficient
of error of 10%. We discuss the extension of the procedure for yield estimation at the full orchard scale for any target precision. 相似文献

Stand density has a positive effect on C, K and Mg concentration in needle litterfall and a negative one on C, N, Ca, K, Mg, P, S, Zn, and Cu release from needle litter. Consequently, forest management practices such as thinning decrease nutrient concentration in needle litterfall and accelerate nutrient release from decomposing needles in Pinus halepensis plantations in Spain.Context
Silvicultural practices usually include stand density reduction resulting in changes in litterfall and litter decomposition rates. Little is known about the effect on nutrient concentrations in litterfall and nutrient release during decomposition even when this is the main path of nutrient return to soils.Aims
The aims of the study are to evaluate the seasonal pattern of nutrient concentration in litterfall, to study how nutrients are released from needle litterfall during decomposition, and to assess whether local basal area of the stand affects nutrient concentration of litterfall and nutrient release during litter decomposition. Methods
Eight plots were established on each of four stands covering the widest range in local basal area. A littertrap and 15 litterbags were placed on each plot. Periodically, needle litterfall and litter contained in the litterbags were analyzed for C, N, Ca, K, Mg, P, S, Fe, Cu, Mn, and Zn.Results
Local basal area had a positive effect on C, K, and Mg concentration in needle litterfall and a negative effect on the release of all the nutrients studied but Fe and Mn during the first 2 years of litter decomposition. Conclusion
Density management of stands has an impact on nutrient cycling, reducing nutrient concentration in needle litterfall, and accelerating nutrient release during decomposition.316.

The strategy for breeding blueberries has been based on phenotypic selection without accounting for pedigree correlation information. A central premise of classical quantitative genetics is that through knowledge of the relationships among individuals in a population, we can make inferences about breeding values (BVs), estimate genetic parameters, and support phenotypic selection. Genetic evaluations using best linear unbiased prediction (BLUP) and restricted maximum likelihood (REML) are founded on pedigree information and have been the standard method used in livestock and forest breeding. Despite theoretical and practical benefits, their application in blueberry breeding programs remains unexploited. The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of REML/BLUP in the University of Florida blueberry breeding program in order to estimate genetic parameters and predict BVs of primary selection traits. To do this, we collected phenotypic data for eight selectable traits (yield, flower bud density, fruit weight, fruit firmness, fruit diameter, fruit soluble solids, fruit pH, and fruit scar diameter) from 1996 individuals. The highest narrow-sense heritabilities were found for fruit weight, scar diameter, and yield. The majority of genetic correlations between traits were under 0.20. The largest genetic gain was achieved when selections from early stages were used as parents and the top 5% of the population was selected. Compared to traditional phenotypic selection, our results are evidencing of the importance of implementing REML/BLUP to estimate genetic parameters that help and support the breeding strategy and maximize genetic gains. 相似文献

The straw on the soil in the green cane harvesting system acts as a physical barrier to the action of the pre-emergence herbicides. However, some herbicides have physico-chemical characteristics to pass through the straw in water solution. The aim was to evaluate the influence of different densities of sugarcane straw on the leaching of aminocyclopyrachlor in a tropical soil (Oxisol—Typic Hapludox) in a system of green cane harvesting. The experiment was carried out using glass columns filled with soil, with and without sugarcane straw (0, 5, 10, and 20 t ha?1) on the top of the soil. 14C-aminocyclopyrachlor was applied followed by 200 mm of simulated rain for 48 h. The herbicide was detected in all soil layers (0–30 cm), and in the leachate (>?30 cm), in small trace amounts (≤?0.21%) in all treatments, showing that aminocyclopyrachlor undergoes a high degree of leaching in the clayey soil. In the absence of straw, 39% of the herbicide remained in the upper layer (0–5 cm). In the presence of straw, the herbicide was distributed through the soil profile, mainly from 0 to 25 cm. Forty percent more herbicide was retained in the straw with 20 t ha?1 of sugarcane straw. Thus, it is concluded that the straw in high amounts retains aminocyclopyrachlor, but does not prevent it from reaching the soil; the high solubility of the herbicide and intense rainfall in a short period of time are factors that contribute to the herbicide passing through this barrier. 相似文献

Due to the lack of information on mineral nutrition of ornamental plants, especially tropical species, we aimed to evaluate the effects of nitrogen fertilization on development, flowering, and mineral nutrition of potted Costus productus. Plants were cultivated along 1 year under protection in Ubatuba, São Paulo State, Brazil, and submitted to five treatments that corresponded to increasing nitrogen doses (0.0, 1.2, 2.4, 3.6, and 4.8 g N plant?1). Evaluated plant variables were potted development, height, dry matter of aerial part, number of inflorescences, and nutritional status. Analysis of variance and linear and polynomial regressions were performed for definition of the best adjustments according to the combination of significance and greater determination coefficient. The nitrogen fertilization positively influenced development, flowering, and mineral nutrition of potted C. productus plants, and the dose of 4.8 g N plant?1 promoted best results 相似文献

Purpose
The aim of this study was to evaluate (i) the ability of two Technosols, prepared with gossan or sulfide-rich wastes plus mixtures of organic/inorganic amendments, to improve the characteristics of the wastes by the analysis of the variation of elemental concentrations in their simulated leachates, and (ii) the potential environmental risk of these Technosols evaluated through the concentrations of the elements leached from the tailings containing the two wastes, considering their mass in the São Domingos mine.Materials and methods
Composite samples of two São Domingos mining wastes (gossan wastes—GW; sulfide-rich wastes—SW) were collected. Amendment mixtures, containing different organic/inorganic wastes (from green agriculture, distillation of Ceratonia siliqua and Arbutus unedo fruits, and limestone quarry), were applied at 12, 30, and 60 g/kg. Two sets of microcosm assays were performed under controlled conditions in greenhouse and monitored during 7 and 13 months for GW and SW, respectively. Materials from each pot/treatment (<5 cm of depth) were collected after 1, 4, 7, and 13 months of incubation and used to obtain simulated leachates (DIN extraction). The analytical parameters evaluated in the leachates were pH, electrical conductivity, and element concentrations using flame atomic absorption spectrometry for cations and graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry, ionic chromatography, and UV-VIS for elements that normally occur as anions in aqueous solution. Results and discussion
Simulated leachates from SW had lower pH and higher concentrations of potentially hazardous elements than leachates from GW. The concentrations of As in leachates from GW-Technosols were higher than those in leachates from GW-control but <0.6 mg/kg. In GW-Technosols leachates, the pH and the concentrations of some nutrients (e.g., Ca and phosphates) also increased when compared to the control. In the SW-Technosols, the pH of the leachates increased only in the first month as long as limestone was present. In these leachates, a general decrease of the concentrations of some elements was observed (e.g., As, sulfate, Fe, Pb), especially in the first month. A clear influence of the dose and type of amendments was not observed during the experimental time span for both wastes. Conclusions
The concentrations of elements like Al, Ca, Fe, and Pb in the leachates are controlled by both the pH of the solutions and the concentrations of phosphates and sulfates. The extensive mass of the studied mine wastes contribute to the release to the neighboring environment of considerable amounts of potentially hazardous elements. The rehabilitation of the mine wastes by the conception of Technosols, especially with sulfide-rich wastes, can reduce significantly their environmental impact.320.
