To assess the influence of orthonasal and retronasal stimulation on cross-modal interactions between texture and flavor perception of food, a series of experiments have been conducted. Healthy human subjects were exposed to strawberry aroma pulses delivered by a computer-controlled stimulator based on air dilution olfactometry. Just prior to exposure to the aroma, the human subjects consumed water, custard, or protein gels with different textures without any added aroma. The aroma was delivered as a sequence of aroma pulses, in either an orthonasal or a retronasal fashion. The retronasal presentation of aroma with concomitant presentation of texture is thought to more closely mimick the in vivo flavor release of semisolid food products as compared to orthonasal stimulation. The time between oral consumption of the food, including swallowing, and the exposure to the aroma varied between 0.5 and 6.5 s. The subjects rated the intensity of the strawberry aroma. It was observed that the intensity of aroma decreased with increasing firmness of the food that was consumed. Aroma pulses delivered 6.5 s after swallowing were perceived as being more intense as compared to aroma pulses delivered immediately after swallowing. In conjunction with late delivery, the effect cross-modal interactions apparently decreased. Significantly higher odor intensities were reported for the aroma stimuli supplied orthonasally in comparison to retronasal administration. The observed cross-modal effect of texture on aroma intensity was not significantly altered by the mode of aroma delivery, i.e., orthonasal or retronasal stimulus administration. 相似文献

Two hexaploid species of Solanum sect. Solanum are present in Africa: Solanum scabrum and S. nigrum. Solanum scabrum is a widely cultivated species and is used as a leafy vegetable, as a source of medicine and as a source of ink dye. In previous
studies a wide range of morphological diversity has been reported in this species and in some studies subspecies have been
proposed. Subspecies are also recognized in S. nigrum. However, it has not been established whether or not the morphological differences are reflected at the genomic level. The
present study applies AFLPs to study the genetic diversity in S. scabrum and its relationship to geographical provenance, morphological differences and the possible existence of subspecies within
S. scabrum and S. nigrum. The data obtained were analyzed with cluster analysis (using UPGMA and NJ). The results indicate that the genetic variation
within S. scabrum was higher within accessions than between accessions. Accessions did not cluster according to their geographical provenance,
indicating that accessions from different geographical areas were not significantly different genetically. The clustering
reflected neither morphological differences nor domestication status (cultivated or wild). The morphological differences exhibited
by S. scabrum could be due to selection by farmers for different plant types. The AFLP derived clustering pattern did not segregate the

Heavy metal contamination of soils is usually quantified and guidelines set solely on the basis of total heavy metal content. However, it is recognised that water soluble heavy metal concentrations may provide a better indication of the potential risk that heavy metals may pose to the soil environment. The aim of this study was to use a semi-empirical model based on the competitive adsorption of metal and H+ ions [dependent on solution pH, total metal content, total carbon content and soil oxide content] to predict water soluble Cu, Cr, Cd, Pb, Ni and Zn concentrations in a range of field contaminated soils. The results of multiple linear regressions showed that basic soil properties could predict 85, 72, 66, 78, 50 and 75% of the variation in soluble Ni, Cu, Cr, Pb, Cd and Zn concentrations respectively. Water soluble metal concentrations were best predicted using empirical linear regressions which included total metal content, while the importance of other soil properties such as soil pH, total carbon and oxalate extractable Fe and Al oxides varied between metals. The models have the potential to provide valuable information on metal availability in contaminated soils and offer an indication of the potential risk a metal may pose to a given soil environment, along with providing a basis for developing soil quality guidelines for the prevention, investigation and clean-up of soil metal contamination. 相似文献

To evaluate immune defense mechanisms against bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV), four calves received primary and secondary intrabronchial infections with the cytopathic, type I Singer strain of BVDV. The cellular and humoral responses to these site-specific infections with BVDV were monitored by sequential bronchoalveolar lavages (BAL) conducted prior to infection (day 0, non-infected controls) and on days 4, 7, 10, 17 (day 31, secondary infection), 35, 38, 41, 48 and 62 post-infection. Peak quantities of BVDV were recovered from BAL on day 4. BVDV clearance from the lung was complete between days 17 and 31. Immune clearance of BVDV from the lower airways upon secondary infection was swift, within 4 days, and sustained throughout a 1-month period. Total numbers of BAL CD4(+) and CD8(+) T-lymphocytes increased >200-fold by day 10, and increased to levels >70-fold higher than background by 4 days after a secondary BVDV infection. gammadelta(+) T-lymphocytes increased 100-fold by day 7 and remained at levels at least 10-fold higher than pre-infection throughout the study. B-lymphocytes increased to levels 30-fold greater than pre-infection levels by day 10, and further increased to levels 100-fold higher following secondary BVDV infection. Activation (defined by the phenotype CD25(+)/CD62L(-)) and memory (defined by the phenotype CD45RO(+)/CD45R(-)) profiles of lymphocytes in the lower airways were characterized. Activated subpopulations of CD4(+) and CD8(+) cells increased nearly 300- and 150-fold, respectively, by day 10, and to levels 100- and 50-fold 4 days after the secondary infection. Memory subpopulations of CD4(+) and CD8(+) cells increased to levels 170- and 120-fold, respectively, by day 10, and to levels approximately 400- and 300-fold, respectively, 7 days after the secondary infection. The primary antibody response consisted of increased titers of anti-BVDV-specific IgA in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF). A strong secondary antibody response with high levels of anti-BVDV-specific IgA and IgG in BALF before day 4 post-secondary BVDV infection, likely contributed, along with cellular defenses, to the rapid clearance of virus from the lung upon secondary exposure. These results demonstrate that primary infection of the bovine lung with BVDV initiates cell-mediated immune responses capable of clearing the virus within 2-3 weeks. Furthermore, populations of immune-activated and memory T-lymphocytes, combined with BVDV-specific antibody production, contribute to rapid BVDV clearance upon secondary exposure to the virus. 相似文献

Antioxidant capacity, as measured by oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC(PE)), total phenolic, total and individual anthocyanins, and proanthocyanidin fraction contents were evaluated in red and white wines from grapes. A comparison in terms of antioxidant capacity is made with nontraditional wines made from highbush blueberry. Blueberries are among fruits that are best recognized for their potential health benefits. In red wines, total oligomeric proanthocyanidin content, including catechins, was substantially higher (177.18 +/- 96.06 mg/L) than that in white wines (8.75 +/- 4.53 mg/L). A relative high correlation in red wines was found between ORAC(PE) values and malvidin compounds (r = 0.75, P < 0.10), and proanthocyanidins (r = 0.87, P < 0.05). In white wines, a significant correlation was found between the trimeric proanthocyanidin fraction and peroxyl radical scavenging values (r = 0.86, P < 0.10). A moderate drink (1 drink per day, about 140 mL) of red wine, or white wine, or wine made from highbush blueberry corresponds to an intake of 2.04 +/- 0.81 mmol of TE, 0.47 +/- 0.15 mmol of TE, and 2.42 +/- 0.88 mmol of TE of ORAC(PE)/day, respectively. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate sensitivity and specificity of a multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay for simultaneous detection of Rhodococcus equi and differentiation of strains that contain the virulence-associated gene (vapA) from strains that do not. SAMPLE POPULATION: 187 isolates of R equi from equine and nonequine tissue and environmental specimens and 27 isolates of bacterial species genetically or morphologically similar to R equi. PROCEDURE: The multiplex PCR assay included 3 gene targets: a universal 311-bp bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA amplicon (positive internal control), a 959-bp R equi-specific target in the cholesterol oxidase gene (choE), and a 564-bp amplicon of the vapA gene. Duplicate multiplex PCR assays for these targets and confirmatory singleplex PCR assays for vapA and choE were performed for each R equi isolate. An additional PCR assay was used to examine isolates for the vapB gene. RESULTS: Results of duplicate multiplex and singleplex PCR assays were correlated in all instances, revealing high specificity and reliability (reproducibility) of the vapA multiplex assay. Of the pulmonary isolates from horses with suspected R equi pneumonia, 97.4% (76/78) yielded positive results for vapA. Seven of 50 (14%) human isolates of R equi yielded positive results for vapA. Six human R equi isolates and 1 porcine isolate yielded positive results for vapB. No isolates with vapA and vapB genes were detected. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The multiplex PCR assay is a sensitive and specific method for simultaneous confirmation of species identity and detection of the vapA gene. Siratro (Macroptilium atropurpureum (DC) Urb.) is a vigorous perennial forage legume with good potential for improving pastures in the extensive neotropical regions of the world. It is well adapted to a wide range of soil and climatic conditions. The objective of these studies was to determine effects of Glomus fasciculatum colonization, rigorous defoliation, and soil fertility treatments to a Psammentic Paleustalf (Eufaula) soil on growth, regrowth, nodulation, and nitrogenase activity (C2H2 red.) of Siratro inoculated with Rhizobium leguminosarum Frank. Top growth increased significantly with soil K and P amendment and with mycorrhiza colonization. Nodulation and nitrogenase activity were correlated with highly significant increases from G. fasciculatum, P treatments and K additions to 300 mg K kg‐1 soil. Growth and peduncles of nonclipped plants increased about 4 fold from 90 to 225 day age with mature seed yield increasing about 10 fold; nodule mass and nitrogenase activity levels approximately doubled. Regrowth response of plants defoliated at 45 day intervals, following their initial 90 day age, was somewhat constant between clippings for magnitude of regrowth 12.3–13.8g, development in number of peduncles 4.0–6.8, seed yield 1.4–2.6g, nodulation 2.9–3.7g, and nitrogenase activity 73.9–95.8μ mol C2H4g‐1 nodule. Multiple regression for nitrogenase = 0.55 g top wt. + 0.63 g nodule wt. + 1.91 day age ‐ 0.07 peduncle no., R2 = 0.85 and C.V. = 14.3%. Favorable tripartite symbiosis with both effective Rhizobium and endophyte mycorrhiza were essential for high levels of symbiotic nitrogen fixation. 相似文献
