Psychophysics measures the relationship between a stimulus's physical magnitude and its perceived magnitude. Because decisions are based on perception of stimuli, this relationship is critical to understanding decision-making. We tested whether psychophysical laws explain how female túngara frogs (Physalaemus pustulosus) and frog-eating bats (Trachops cirrhosus) compare male frog calls, and how this imposes selection on call evolution. Although both frogs and bats prefer more elaborate calls, they are less selective as call elaboration increases, because preference is based on stimulus ratios. Thus, as call elaboration increases, both relative attractiveness and relative predation risk decrease because of how receivers perceive and compare stimuli. Our data show that female cognition can limit the evolution of sexual signal elaboration. 相似文献

The scope of this study encompassed the evaluation of pullulan as a suitable biopolymer for the development of oxygen barrier coatings to be applied on poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), especially for food packaging applications. To enhance the oxygen barrier properties of the organic phase (pullulan) even at high relative humidity values, an inorganic phase (silica), obtained through in situ polymerization, was also utilized to obtain hybrid coatings via the sol-gel technique. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra showed that mixing the two phases yielded a three-dimensional hybrid network formed by self-assembly and mediated by the occurrence of new hydrogen-bond interactions at the intermolecular level, although the formation of new covalent bonds could not be excluded. The deposition of the hybrid coatings decreased the oxygen transmission rate (OTR) of the plastic substrate by up to 2 orders of magnitude under dry conditions. The best performance throughout the scanned humidity range (0%-80% relative humidity) was obtained for the formulation with the lowest amount of silica (that is, an organic/inorganic ratio equal to 3). 相似文献

The results of predictive vegetation models are often presented spatially as GIS-derived surfaces of vegetation attributes
across a landscape or region, but spatial information is rarely included in the model itself. Geographically weighted regression
(GWR), which extends the traditional regression framework by allowing regression coefficients to vary for individual locations
(‘spatial non-stationarity’), is one method of utilizing spatial information to improve the predictive power of such models.
In this paper, we compare the ability of GWR, a local model, with that of ordinary least-squares (OLS) regression, a global
model, to predict patterns of montane ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) basal area in Saguaro National Park, AZ, USA on the basis of variables related to topography (elevation, slope steepness,
aspect) and fire history (fire frequency, time since fire).
The localized regression coefficients exhibited significant non-stationarity for four of the five environmental variables,
and the GWR model consequently described the vegetation-environment data significantly better, even after accounting for differences
in model complexity. GWR also reduced observed spatial autocorrelation of the model residuals. When applied to independent
data locations not used in model development, basal areas predicted by GWR had a closer fit to observed values with lower
residuals than those from the optimal OLS regression model. GWR also provided insights into fine-scale controls of ponderosa
pine pattern that were missed by the global model. For example, the relationship between ponderosa pine basal area and aspect,
which was obscured in the OLS regression model due to non-stationarity, was clearly demonstrated by the GWR model. We thus
see GWR as a valuable complement to the many other global methods currently in use for predictive vegetation modeling. 相似文献

The influence of six fungicides (azoxystrobin, cyprodinil, fludioxonil, mepanipyrim, pyrimethanil, and tetraconazole) on the fermentative activity of two yeasts (Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Kloeckeraapiculata) and two lactic bacteria (Leuconostoc oenos and Lactobacillus plantarum) was studied. The possibility of their being degraded by these yeasts and bacteria was also investigated. The presence of the pesticides did not affect alcoholic fermentation, not even with levels higher than those normally found in grapes in field experiments. On the contrary, their presence stimulated the yeast, especially K. apiculata, to produce more alcohol. The fermentative process did not affect the amount of pesticides either by degradation or by adsorption. During malolactic fermentation by Le. oenos, malic acid decreased slightly less (by approximately 15%) in the presence of all pesticides, except mepanipyrim. A lower effect ( approximately 5%) was found during the fermentative process with La. plantarum. The bacteria studied did not show a degradative effect on pesticides during malolactic fermentation. 相似文献

The behavior of the fungicide fenhexamid, N-(2,3-dichloro-4-hydroxyphenyl)-1-methyl-cyclohexanecarboxamide, has been studied at concentrations corresponding to the limits fixed for grapes (3 mg kg(-1)), or higher, during the alcoholic fermentation. The presence of the fungicide did not affect the amount of alcohol produced. The amount of fenhexamid in the liquid phase decreased by ca. 15%, but the missing fenhexamid was recovered unchanged from yeasts. This suggests that the fungicide is not degraded during the fermentation process, but adsorbed by yeasts. Two constituents of Saccharomyces cerevisiae cell wall, chitin and glucan, tested as potential adsorbents, exhibited affinity for fenhexamid. 相似文献

Boar exposure has been used for estrus induction of prepubertal gilts, but has limited effect on estrus synchronization within 7 d of introduction. In contrast, PG600 (400 IU of PMSG and 200 IU of hCG; Intervet, Millsboro, DE) is effective for induction of synchronized estrus, but the response is often variable. It is unknown whether boar exposure before PG600 administration might improve the efficiency of estrus induction of prepubertal gilts. In Exp. 1, physical or fence-line boar contact for 19 d was evaluated for inducing puberty in gilts before administration of i.m. PG600. Exp. 2 investigated whether 4-d boar exposure and gilt age influenced response to PG600. In Exp. 1, 150-d-old prepubertal gilts were randomly allotted to receive fence-line (n = 27, FBE) or physical (n = 29, PBE) boar exposure. Gilts were provided exposure to a mature boar for 30 min daily. All gilts received PG600 at 169 d of age. Estrous detection continued for 20 d after injection. In Exp. 2, prepubertal gilts were allotted by age group (160 or 180 d) to receive no boar exposure (NBE) or 4 d of fence-line boar exposure (BE) for 30 min daily before receiving PG600 either i.m. or s.c. Following PG600 administration, detection for estrus occurred twice-daily using fence-line boar exposure for 7 d. Results of Exp. 1 indicated no differences between FBE and PBE on estrus (77%), age at puberty (170 d), interval from PG600 to estrus (4 d), gilts ovulating (67%), or ovulation rate (12 corpora lutea, CL). Results from Exp. 2 indicated no effect of age group on estrus (55%) and days from PG600 to estrus (4 d). A greater (P < 0.05) proportion of BE gilts expressed estrus (65 vs. 47%), had a shorter (P < 0.05) interval from PG600 to estrus (3.6 vs. 4.3 d), and had decreased (P < 0.05) age at estrus (174 vs. 189 d) compared with NBE. Ovulation rate was greater (P < 0.05) in the BE group for the 180-d-old gilts (12.7 vs. 11.9 CL) compared with the NBE group. However, age group had no effect on ovulation (77%) or ovulation rate (12 CL). Collectively, these results indicate that physical boar contact may not be necessary when used in conjunction with PG600 to induce early puberty. The administration of PG600 to 180-d-old gilts in conjunction with 4 d prior fence-line boar exposure may improve induction of estrus, ovulation, and decrease age at puberty. 相似文献

A total of 718 ocular squamous cell carcinomas of cattle were treated with various cryosurgical units and techniques during a 2.5-year study. In 609 of the lesions, a single freeze was used, with a cure rate (total regression) of 66%. In 109 lesions treated with a double freeze-thaw cycle (rapid freeze to - 25 C, and unaided thaw followed immediately by refreezing to -25 C), the cure rate was 97%. Cryosurgical units designed for delivery of liquid nitrogen provided a more rapid rate of freezing and, thus, a higher cure rate than did units designed for delivery of nitrogen vapor. It was concluded that cryosurgery for treatment of squamous cell carcinoma is a simple and rapid procedure; is economical; provides analgesia itself, due to sensory nerve injury; requires minimal preoperative and no postoperative medication; causes minimal side effects; may be repeated; and is excellent for use on suspect premalignant lesions. 相似文献
