High density lipoprotein binding protein (HDLBP) or vigilin is a molecule with a broad range of functions dealing with the maintenance of heterochromatin structure and the regulation of gene expression. There is evidence that HDLBP expression is modulated by the intracellular levels of cholesterol. Moreover, vigilin is differentially expressed in the macrophages and smooth muscle cells of atherosclerotic plaques with regard to those of nondiseased coronary intima. In this work, we have sequenced 98% of the coding region of the pig HDLBP gene. Sequence alignment allowed us to identify a c.3120G>A synonymous polymorphism at exon 23 that segregated in a commercial Duroc population. Performance of an association analysis with serum lipid levels and diverse fatness and carcass traits allowed us to identify an experiment-wide significant association between this polymorphism and intramuscular fat content of longissimus thoracis et lumborum muscle (P = 0.0034). A nestling Derbyan parrot ( Psittacula derbiana ) was presented with unusual subcutaneous swellings of the thigh regions, and poor growth. Histological examination revealed actinomycetous bacteria associated with multifocal systemic granulomas. The clinical and pathological findings of the case are presented, and some relevant aspects of actinomycetous bacterial infections in mammals and birds are discussed. Although granulomatous disease is encountered at times in avian species, the actinomycetous bacteria ( Nocardia and Actinomyces spp.) have rarely been reported in association with multifocal granulomatous disease in birds. 相似文献

COX‐2 overexpression is associated with several hallmarks of carcinogenesis such as proliferation, angiogenesis, invasion and metastasis. Fifty cases of canine mast cell tumours (MCT) were retrospectively evaluated and submitted to immunohistochemistry for COX‐2, CD31, Ki‐67, MAC‐387 and CD3. Furthermore its relationship with clinicopathological variables and overall survival (OS) was analysed. COX‐2 intensity (P = 0.016), but not COX‐2 extension nor score was associated with decreased OS and higher grades of malignancy according to Patnaik (P = 0.002) and Kiupel (P < 0.001) grading systems. Cox‐2 intensity was also associated with higher Ki‐67 scores (P = 0.009), higher mitotic index (P = 0.022) and higher microvascularization density (P = 0.045). No association was observed for COX‐2 intensity and CD3‐T lymphocyte (P = 0.377) and macrophage infiltration (P = 0.261) by MAC‐387 immunollabelling, suggesting an active role of COX‐2 in MCT oncogenesis mainly through proliferation and angiogenesis stimulation making it a potentially clinical relevant prognosis marker and therapeutic target. 相似文献

Knowledge of congenital malformations and their causes in horses is generally sparse. Such conditions require more scientific attention to improve their diagnostics and inform prevention strategies. Here, a unique syndrome of bilateral oblique facial clefts (meloschisis), rudimentary eyes and hydrocephalus is reported in an equine foetus spontaneously aborted at gestation day 224. The cause of abortion was considered to be intrauterine death caused by umbilical cord torsions and subsequent compromised blood flow, but the aetiology of the malformation could not be determined. A detailed history, which includes exposure to a range of pharmaceutical compounds during the early stages of pregnancy, is provided and emphasizes the need for accurate recording of treatments in pregnant animals. 相似文献

Sarcocystis neurona was isolated from sporocysts from two of eight South American opossums, Didelphis albiventris, from Brazil. Interferon gamma gene knock out (KO) mice fed sporocysts from two opossums developed neurologic sarcocystosis. S. neurona was demonstrated in the brains of infected KO mice by immunohistochemical staining with anti-S. neurona antibody. The parasite was cultivated in cell culture and S. neurona DNA was isolated from cultured merozoites. To date, the only repeatable method to select spermatozoa for chromosomal sex is the Beltsville sorting technology using flow cytometry. Improvement of this technology in the equine species requires increasing awareness of the modifications that the sorting procedure induces on sperm intactness. Oxidative stress is regarded as the major damaging phenomenon, and increasing evidence regards handling of spermatozoa – including sex sorting – as basic ground for oxidative damage. The aim of this study was to disclose whether the flow cytometric sorting procedure increases the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and to identify if ROS production relates to DNA damage in sorted spermatozoa using specific flow cytometry‐based assays. After sorting, oxidative stress increased from 26% to 33% in pre‐ and post‐incubation controls, to 46% after sex sorting (p < 0.05). Proportions of DNA fragmentation index post‐sorting were approximately 10% higher (31.3%); an effect apparently conduced via oxidative DNA damage as revealed by the oxyDNA assay. The probable origin of this increased oxidative stress owes the removal of enough seminal plasma due to the unphysiological sperm extension, alongside a deleterious effect of high pressure on mitochondria during the sorting procedure. 相似文献

The prevalence of anti-Toxoplasma gondii and anti-Neospora caninum antibodies was investigated in goats slaughtered in the public slaughterhouse of Patos, State of Paraíba, Northeast region of Brazil, and possible associations between sex of the animals and antibody prevalence were verified. Three-hundred six blood samples from goats collected before slaughter by jugular venopuncture were used. For the serologic diagnosis of T. gondii and N. caninum, the indirect fluorescent-antibody test (IFAT) with cut-off values 64 and 50, respectively, was carried out. The prevalence of anti-T. gondii antibodies was 24.5% [95% CI=19.8-29.7%] with titers ranging from 64 to 4096, and anti-N. caninum antibodies was 3.3% (95% CI=1.6-5.9%) with titers ranging from 50 to 400. There were no associations between sex of animals and prevalence of anti-T. gondii and anti-N. caninum antibodies. 相似文献
