Summary
15N balances were compared in rice (Oryza sativa L., cv. Calrose) grown under continuous flood (CF) or sprinkler irrigation. Two sprinkler treatments with irrigation frequencies of once (S1W) and thrice (S3W) per week were studied. Five atom %15N-labelled urea (60 kg N ha–1) was applied to microplots either 36 or 84 days after emergence (DAE). An equivalent amount of unlabelled urea was applied at the other application time, so that each microplot received a total of 120 kg N ha–1 in an equal split. There was no significant effect of irrigation treatment on recovery of urea N by straw. Straw recovery from urea applied 36 DAE was almost half that from an application 84 DAE, and time of urea application produced a similar effect on recovery in grain. Grain recovery in S1W was less than half that in CF and S3W for both application times. Total plant recovery of urea N applied 36 DAE was similar for all irrigation treatments (average 29%), but for urea applied 84 DAE total plant recovery in CF (67%) was significantly higher than in S1W (49%). Total N uptake in the plant tops was considerably lower in both the sprinkler-irrigated treatments when compared with CF, and this was mostly due to reduced soil N uptake in S3W (one-half) and S1W (one-third). The proportion of N derived from fertilizer in the plant tops increased from 40% in CF to 60% in S1W. Immobilization of applied N in the soil of the sprinkler-irrigated treatments was greater than in CF by factors of 1.5 (S3W) and 2 (S1W). Immobilization of urea N applied 36 DAE was almost 50% greater than immobilization of urea N applied 84 DAE. There was a trend for lower losses of fertilizer N with sprinkler irrigation (mean loss 18% of the applied N) compared with CF (27%). Within all irrigation treatments, the loss from urea applied 36 DAE was more than double the loss from urea applied 84 DAE. An additional study in CF compared the 15N balance for split application versus a single dose applied 36 DAE (before permanent flood). Split application resulted in significantly increased plant recovery of applied 15N, and this was largely associated with increased recovery in the grain. Slightly more fertilizer N was immobilized in the soil with a single application. The effect of application method on N loss was not significant. 相似文献
Summary This paper, second in a series of three, develops a mathematical model, using the volume balance approach, to simulate vertical and horizontal recession of border irrigation. An equation is proposed for computing Manning's roughness factor N in both laminar and transitional flow regimes in recession phases. The model has four parameters which can be determined experimentally. Experimental data from ten vegetated as well as nonvegetated borders were used to verify the model. Average difference (AD) between calculated and observed vertical recession times was less than 4.4 min, and between calculated and observed horizontal recession times less than 4.6 min for the ten experimental data sets. Average relative error (ARE) in computed horizontal recession was less than 13% for these data sets. The model was found to be especially accurate for Reynold's number between 1,800 and 2,500. 相似文献
Flow conditions, which could not be explained, occurred in the stilling basin and outfall channel of the Feni Regulator sited at the western end of the Feni River closure dam. This regulator controls outflows from the upstream reservoir which supplies irrigation water to Muhuri Project in Bangladesh. Analysis of flood discharge data revealed that the design discharge for the structure was not exceeded; yet abnormal scour occurred in the outfall channel and the brick block rip-rap placed thereon was damaged. A model study was conducted to understand the causes of such unusual local erosion downstream of the stilling basin and to provide answers to two main questions:
-Is potential scour serious in terms of the stability of the structure?
-What protection measures could be taken to stabilize the scour at a safe level?
Using a 1:30 scale model, the probable maximum scour was simulated, and the performance of alternative rip-rap designs including that of the existing one were examined. The results of this study supplemented by field scour data collected during subsequent flood seasons indicated that even if the flow rate through the regulator approaches the design flood discharge, the downstream scour is not likely to extend up to an elevation of ? 10.7 m, a scour level observed in the previous year at a lower discharge. It also showed that the existing rip-rap blocks were marginally undersized and consequently the rip-rap was prone to failure if flow conditions departed from uniform. A suitable method of scour protection downstream of the stilling basin at the regulator exit also evolved from the study. 相似文献
Summary Dry-seeded rice (Oryza sativa L., cv. Calrose) was subjected to 4 irrigation treatments — continuous flood (CF) and sprinkler irrigation at frequencies of one (S1 W), two (S2W) and three (S3W) applications per week — commencing 37 d after 50% emergence (DAE). The amount of water applied was calculated to replace water lost by pan evaporation. Urea (120 kg N ha–1) was applied in a 1:1 split 36 and 84 DAE, and there were also unfertilized controls for each irrigation treatment. Amounts of nitrate (NO
3–
) in the soil were very low throughout the growing season in all treatments, despite regular periods of draining which lasted for up to 7 d in SlW. In all irrigation treatments, the majority of the fertilizer nitrogen (N) was located in the top 20 mm of soil. After each application of fertilizer, levels of mineral N in CF declined rapidly, while levels in S3W and S1W remained high for 1–2 weeks longer. The poor growth of sprinkler-irrigated rice was not due to lower amounts of mineral N in the soil. The greater persistence of fertilizer N in the sprinkler-irrigated treatments was probably due to reduced root activity near the soil surface because of frequent periods of soil drying in between irrigations. Net mineralization of soil N in the unfertilized sprinkler-irrigated treatments was reduced by about half compared with CF.On average, the quantity of water applied (1.2–1.4 × EP) to the sprinkler-irrigated treatments appeared to be sufficient to meet the evapotranspiration demands of the crop, except possibly around flowering time. However, the plants may have suffered from moisture stress in between irrigations. Soil matric potential data at 100 mm suggested little water stress in the sprinkler-irrigated treatments during the vegetative stage, consistent with the similar tiller and panicle densities in all irrigation treatments. However, the crop was stunted and yellow and leaf rolling was observed in the sprinkler-irrigated treatments during this period. Soil matric potential data at 100 mm indicated considerable water stress in S1W beyond the commencement of anthesis, and in S2W during grain filling, consistent with the reduced floret fertility and grain weight in those treatments. 相似文献
Summary Salinity, a common environmental constraint in arid and semiarid regions, causes substantial reduction in yield and nitrogen fixation in sensitive edible seed legumes. Greenhouse experiments were designed to determine whether irrigation and fertilizer supplements could reduce the adverse effects of soluble salts on yield and nitrogen fixation in a sensitive seed legume. Snapbeans, Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv Early Gallatin, inoculated with Rhizobium phaseoli L., were given 3 levels of irrigation salinity, 3 frequencies of irrigation and 2 N levels, and 3 P levels, on a P-deficient Argixeroll. Yield components, percent plant N, and acetylene reduction were reduced significantly as salinity and the interval between water applications increased. Fertilizer application had no effect on any plant component. Two- and three-way interactions confirmed the strong effects of the individual variables of salinity and irrigation frequency. Increasing irrigation frequency increased yield at all of the water salinities studied. Application of N, P, K fertilizers helped maintain yields at low to moderate levels of soil salinity, but not at high salt levels. Snap-bean plants harvested at seed maturity, however, did not show a significantly substantial benefit of fertilizer for Rhizobium in the stressed rhizosphere. 相似文献
It is assumed that Agent-Based Modeling is a useful technique for water management issues. In particular, it may provide a suitable framework for representing irrigated systems. The objective of this paper is to demonstrate its potential for a specific use: research on irrigated systems’ viability in the Senegal River Valley. The main assumption to be verified is that Multi-Agent Systems constitute a suitable architecture to study theoretically irrigated systems’ viability using simulations. By using Multi-Agent Systems, virtual irrigated systems can be designed that might then be used as virtual laboratories. These virtual labs constitute an alternative when real labs cannot exist for some reason.
In this paper we report on experiments we have conducted using such virtual labs for exploring an Agent-Based Model through the simulation of scenarios. A scenario is defined as a triplet: an environment, a set of individual rules, a set of collective rules. It is evaluated according to the longevity of the irrigated system. An index is defined, based on the ratio of long-enduring simulations among a set of repetitions of a given scenario. Even if simulation results display significant diversity for a given scenario due to random factors in the processes simulated, the ratio of long-enduring simulations is repeatable. This entails to explore the overall behavior of the virtual irrigated system and to build theories concerning the viability of Senegalese irrigated systems. An example is given showing the need for strong coherence for a given environment among individual rules and collective rules. 相似文献
Water is a primary limiting factor to crop production and thus crop water status is essential information for management decisions. Corn and cotton were grown in the field under two constant water regimes. The low water level (WL) was 0.662PET (potential evapotranspiration) in corn and rainfall for cotton. The high water level (WH) was 1.02PET for both crops. Two transient water treatments in each crop began as the two constant water level treatments but then the water inputs were reversed and the change in water status was monitored. When the transient water treatments were initiated, corn was at the V14 and V16 growth stages in the WL and WH treatments, respectively, and cotton was 2 weeks past first bloom for both water levels. The purpose of the experiment was to compare the sensitivity of leaf water potential (LWP) and crop canopy temperature to changes in irrigation rate. The transient water treatment of each crop that relieved water stress (TLH) changed from WL to WH and the treatment which induced water stress changed from WH to WL (THL). The LWP values of the transient water treatments reversed 5 and 8 days after reversing water input rates to corn in 1998 and 1999, respectively, and after 3 days in both years for cotton. A reversal in canopy temperatures, expressed as the amount of daily time that the temperature was above 28°C (DST), was not detected between the TLH and THL treatments of corn after 25 days in 1998 or after 13 days in 1999. The DST values of the cotton transient water treatments reversed after 4 days in 1998 and 5 days in 1999, when the values of THL became greater than for TLH. Corn tassels, which apparently transpire less than leaves, were forming at the beginning of the transient water treatments and their presence in the view of the infrared thermocouples may have reduced the apparent radiometric temperature difference between the transient water treatments. During the water status adjustment period following the initiation of the transient water treatments, there were significant linear relationships between LWP and DST in cotton in both years but only in 1998 in corn. Cotton canopy temperature could be used to rapidly monitor an entire field in contrast to LWP which accurately measures plant water status but cannot provide automated measurements across a large area. 相似文献
Summary Laboratory studies were conducted to evaluate the effects of drying on soil strength and corn emergence (Zea mays L.). Corn was germinated in Billings silty clay under a bank of heat lamps which operated 9, 14, 19, or 24 h per day. Soil strength (modules of rupture), soil moisture content and emergence were measured daily. The relationship of soil strength to corn seedling emergence as influenced by the four light and heat durations and bare and mulched soil surfaces was determined. As soil strength increased emergence decreased until it ceased at soil strengths of about 80 kPa. Strength of this soil had a high negative correlation with soil water content and increased with time. Mulching decreased initial rate of drying, decreased crust strength, and improved corn emergence. The 14-hour light and heat treatment resulted in the highest corn emergence.Contribution from Colorado State Experiment Station, USDA-ARS Snake River Conservation Research Center, and USDA-ARS Fort Collins, respectively 相似文献
Water and land resource competition and environmental degradation pose difficult questions for resource managers. In particular, the ensuing trade-offs between economic, environmental, and social factors and their spatiotemporal variability must be considered when implementing management policies. This paper describes an integrated modelling toolbox that has been developed for highland catchments – specifically the Mae Chaem catchment in Northern Thailand. This toolbox contains models of crop growth, erosion and rainfall-runoff, as well as household decision and socioeconomic impact models. The approach described advances and complements previous approaches by: considering more complex interactions between land-use decisions and the hydrological cycle; modelling household decisions based on uncertain expectations; and assessing impacts of changes not only on flows and household income, but also on subsistence production and erosion. An example of the types of trade-offs and scenarios that can be assessed using the integrated modelling toolbox is also presented. This demonstrates that for the scenarios presented, the magnitude and direction of impacts simulated by the model is not dependent on climate. Further testing of the model is demonstrated in a companion paper. Overall, the plausibility of the model is shown. 相似文献
To facilitate weed suppression, oilseed rape or canola (Brassica napus) has been genetically modified (GM) over the last two decades to incorporate herbicide tolerance (HT). The introduction of oilseed rape in commercial agriculture raises concerns about potential adverse agronomic and environmental effects linked to both the genetic modification and altered agricultural practice. How will this new crop modify the existing cropping practice? What are the potential agro-environmental implications of its introduction? This paper analyses and schematises recorded and conceivable agricultural practice changes with GMHT oilseed rape introduction and its likely agro-environmental effects. It develops a conceptual systematics of influencing factors, subsequent practice changes and likely agro-environmental effects. The results can be used to design the mandatory monitoring of adverse GM crop effects. 相似文献
