The study describes the profiles of culled cows in order to assess the possible contribution to economic losses due to health disorders. Data regarding dates of birth, final calving and culling, parity at culling, milk yield at the two first test-days of the final lactation and reason(s) for culling were collected in a 5-year survey, carried out from 1989 to 1994 in 84 commercial Holstein farms in western France. Polytomous logistic regression was used to assess the relationship between parity, calving-to-culling interval, milk yield and eight groups of primary culling reasons (i.e. udder disorders; infertility or reproductive disorders; lameness or foot/leg defects; emergency culling reasons; other health disorders; low milk yield; sales for dairy purpose; and other voluntary culling reasons). Out of a total of 5133 culled cows, the proportions of culls, for each of these groups of reasons, were 12.4, 28.4, 2.7, 3.9, 4.6, 16.7, 5.9, and 25.4%, respectively. Cows culled for udder disorders left the herd earlier in lactation and were more frequently at parities 4–6 than cows culled for voluntary reasons. In contrast, cows culled for infertility were younger and culled later within lactation. They were also higher yielding cows than those culled for other reasons. Cows culled for lameness were similar to those of the voluntarily culling group. Cows culled for emergency reasons were more frequently younger cows in early lactation. Cows culled for other health disorders left the herd early in lactation, but at a higher parity than the voluntarily culled cows. These results suggest that most of the culls related to health could be contributing to economic loss. However, special priority should be given to reduce culling for reproductive problems, which is the most costly exit reason. 相似文献

Ultrasonography was used to compare adhesions induced by two different methods of gastropexy in 16 dogs. An incisional gastropexy technique was used in eight dogs (group 1) and a 'modified' gastropexy technique in the remaining eight (group 2). The length and thickness of the gastropexy and the peristaltic activity of the stomach were measured ultrasonographically and compared between groups. Measurements for the two groups were taken in the early postoperative interval (two to four days), intermediate postoperative interval (eight to 20 days) and late postoperative interval (57 to 79 days). Both techniques were equally successful in forming permanent adhesions at two months postoperatively and there was no recurrence of gastric dilatation and volvulus. The length and thickness of the gastropexy were similar for both groups at two months postoperatively and there were no surgical complications with either technique. The modified gastropexy provides a technique that can easily be performed by a single surgeon , with no increased operative time or duration of anaesthesia, and with the formation of a permanent adhesion. 相似文献

This paper reports the development and use of a Real Time PCR for detection of Babesia canis canis, B. canis rossi, and B. canis vogeli in endemic areas of Brazil. The sequences of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) of several organisms were aligned and five primers and four probes were designed for amplification of a fragment (around 125 bp) which differentiates subspecies of B. canis. Blood samples collected from dogs living in farms in three distinct rural regions within the State of Minas Gerais (Lavras, Belo Horizonte and Nanuque) were tested. Blood samples had been collected during a dry season (Lavras, n=100; Belo Horizonte, n=50; Nanuque, n=102); the dogs were re-sampled in the subsequent rainy season (Lavras, n=71; Belo Horizonte, n=29; Nanuque, n=66). From each sample, DNA was extracted and Giemsa stained smears were microscopically examined for direct detection of Babesia parasites. B. canis vogeli was the only subspecies found, with an overall prevalence of 9.9% during the dry season and 10.8% during the rainy season. Dogs living in Nanuque and Belo Horizonte showed significantly higher prevalence rates than those living in Lavras (13.7%, 12.0% and 5.0%, respectively). A viral enteric disease of young turkeys characterized by stunting of affected birds, diarrhea, and increased mortality is described. Eosinophilic intranuclear inclusion bodies were found in the absorptive epithelial cells of the ileum. Electron microscopy of formalin-fixed tissue revealed that the intestinal inclusions contained numerous loosely packed 15-to 20-nm hexagonal particles. The size, shape, and intranuclear location have been used to tentatively identify these particles as parvoviruses. 相似文献

In the present study a cytological, histological and morphometrical comparison between the ovaries of the llama, the cow and the sheep is presented, at two phases of the ovarian cycle. There were found differences in the amount of primordial and primary follicles, the size of secondary follicles and follicular cells, and type and distribution of the connective tissue inside the stroma of the ovary. A 1.5-year-old Suffolk ewe with acute onset of incoordination and blindness unresponsive to antibiotic treatment was examined at necropsy. The meninges were congested, opaque, and thick. Microscopically, focal areas of hypercellularity in the left cortical gray matter and the meninges were observed. The inflammatory response consisted of gliosis and perivascular cuffing (lymphocytes, plasma cells, and variable numbers of eosinophils). An amebic organism in 2 life stages was found in the cerebral parenchyma. Numerous large (15 to 35 microns in diameter) organisms, interpreted as trophozoites, were characterized by vacuolated cytoplasm and small nuclei with a prominent eosinophilic nucleolus (karyosome). The smaller (10 to 17 microns in diameter) encysted stage was surrounded by a capsule-like membrane, and contained a large central body sometimes surrounded by a clear halo. Immunofluorescence studies for amebic antigens were strongly positive for an ameba recently isolated in human beings and baboons (Leptomyxid sp). 相似文献

Two similar cytopathic agents were recovered from the throat and rectal swab specimens of an immature dog with upper respiratory tract disease. The reference isolate, 14-72R, was shown to be a member of the reovirus group by its physicochemical properties, cytopathic effects in cell cultures, and appearance when examined in the electron microscope. Both isolates hemagglutinated human type O erythrocytes and antigenically were closely related to reovirus type 2. The affected pup had an increase in antibody titer to reovirus types 2 and 3. The latter findings provide evidence for possible heterotypic antibody responses in dogs to reovirus infection. 相似文献

Borna Disease (BD) is a mostly fatal disease of horses and sheep endemic in central Europe. Antibodies to Borna disease virus (BDV) have been described in sheep and other species living in BD non-endemic areas. Meaningful clinical BDV serology is hampered by difficulties in defining serological cut-offs, which require the investigation of populations from endemic areas. Here we studied BD serology in sheep from endemic and non-endemic areas of similar geography in Switzerland. Antibodies to BDV antigens were detected by ELISA and indirect immunofluorescence analysis (IFA) only in sera from 3 of 6 sheep with autopsy confirmed BD. One serum was positive by IFA but not by ELISA, while 2 sera were negative in both assays, indicating that not all diseased animals develop BDV specific antibodies. Six % of clinically healthy animals (6/106) from an endemic area and 2% from a non-endemic area (4/192) had serum antibody to either BDV p40 or p24 as detected by ELISA. None of the animals showed a cellular immune response to BDV p40. In some healthy sheep from the endemic area, serum antibody titers to BDV p24 antigen remained elevated over several months without onset of disease symptoms. Infections with either BDV or related viruses may thus occur at low frequency in sheep from non-endemic areas leading to the production of antibodies to BDV antigens. We further propose viral strain differences or environmental factor(s) may determine the clinical outcome. 相似文献
