Physical and biological variables affecting juvenile Pacific herring (Clupea pallasi) in Prince William Sound (PWS) from 1995 to 1998 were investigated as part of a multifaceted study of recruitment, the Sound Ecosystem Assessment (SEA) program. Though more herring larvae were retained in eastern PWS bays, ages‐0 and ‐1 herring used bays throughout PWS as nursery areas. Water transported into PWS from the Gulf of Alaska (GOA) contributed oceanic prey species to neritic habitats. Consequently, variations in local food availability resulted in different diets and growth rates of herring among bays. Summer food availability and possible interspecific competition for food in nursery areas affected the autumn nutritional status and juvenile whole body energy content (WBEC), which differed among bays. The WBEC of age‐0 herring in autumn was related to over‐winter survival. The limited amount of food consumption in winter was not sufficient to meet metabolic needs. The smallest age‐0 fish were most at risk of starvation in winter. Autumn WBEC of herring and winter water temperature were used to model over‐winter mortality of age‐0 herring. Differences in feeding and energetics among nursery areas indicated that habitat quality and age‐0 survival were varied among areas and years. The model is a multiple regression function in which oyster size and seawater temperature are treated as determinants of instantaneous growth rate. The importance of obtaining reliable estimates of the sea age composition of reported salmon catches are discussed. The use of length frequency distributions to determine the sea age of salmon in samples taken from the North Esk commercial catch are described. The results obtained using this technique are compared to those obtained from scale reading on a 4 weekly basis over a 16-year period. The use of length frequencies is shown to provide a reliable estimate of the sea age composition of catch samples. The adoption of this technique in catch sampling programmes is labour saving and facilitates rapid sampling. 相似文献

Small‐scale fisheries (SSF) make important but undervalued contributions to the economies of some of the world’s poorest countries. They also provide much of the animal protein needed by societies in which food security remains a pressing issue. Assessment and management of these fisheries is usually inadequate or absent and they continue to fall short of their potential as engines for development and social change. In this study, we bring together existing theory and methods to suggest a general scheme for diagnosing and managing SSF. This approach can be adapted to accommodate the diversity of these fisheries in the developing world. Many threats and solutions to the problems that beset SSF come from outside the domain of the fishery. Significant improvements in prospects for fisheries will require major changes in societal priorities and values, with consequent improvements in policy and governance. Changes in development policy and science reflect these imperatives but there remains a need for intra‐sectoral management that builds resilience and reduces vulnerability to those forces beyond the influence of small‐scale fishers. 相似文献

- The ocean crisis is urgent and central to human wellbeing and life on Earth; past and current activities are damaging the planet's main life support system for future generations. We are witnessing an increase in ocean heat, disturbance, acidification, bio‐invasions and nutrients, and reducing oxygen levels. Several of these act like ratchets: once detrimental or negative changes have occurred, they may lock in place and may not be reversible, especially at gross ecological and ocean process scales.
- Each change may represent a loss to humanity of resources, ecosystem function, oxygen production and species. The longer we pursue unsuitable actions, the more we close the path to recovery and better ocean health and greater benefits for humanity in the future.
- We stand at a critical juncture and have identified eight priority issues that need to be addressed in unison to help avert a potential ecological disaster in the global ocean. They form a purposely ambitious agenda for global governance and are aimed at informing decision‐makers at a high level. They should also be of interest to the general public.
- Of all the themes, the highest priority is to rigorously address global warming and limit surface temperature rise to 1.5°C by 2100, as warming is the pre‐eminent factor driving change in the ocean. The other themes are establishing a robust and comprehensive High Seas Treaty, enforcing existing standards for Marine Protected Areas and expanding their coverage, especially in terms of high levels of protection, adopting a precautionary pause on deep‐sea mining, ending overfishing and destructive fishing practices, radically reducing marine pollution, putting in place a financing mechanism for ocean management and protection, and lastly, scaling up science/data gathering and facilitating data sharing.
- By implementing all eight measures in unison, as a coordinated strategy, we can build resilience to climate change, help sustain fisheries productivity, particularly for low‐income countries dependent on fisheries, protect coasts (e.g. via soft‐engineering/habitat‐based approaches), promote mitigation (e.g. carbon storage) and enable improved adaptation to rapid global change.

A dysentery syndrome was recognized among the Institute's calves at 18 to 21 days of age. It was reproduced experimentally in gnotobiotic calves with an atypical Escherichia coli (S102-9) isolated from the affected calves. In both natural and experimental disease the calves passed copious bright red blood in the feces and developed diarrhea. Walls of the colon and rectum were thickened, and the mucosa was reddened and covered by an exudate that contained mucus and blood clots. Bacteria were seen closely adherent to the luminal surfaces of enterocytes, often in cup-shaped depressions or on cytoplasmic pedestals. Microvilli were distorted, disorientated or absent. There was exfoliation of infected enterocytes and a mild acute inflammation of the underlying lamina. In two of five calves with natural disease, the adherent bacteria did not stain by the immunoperoxidase method with antisera raised against E. coli (S102-9). This indicated that there was possibly more than one bacterial cause of the syndrome. Lesions in experimentally infected calves were indistinguishable from those produced by some E. coli which are enteropathogenic for man, rabbits, and pigs. 相似文献

Determinations of serum folate and cobalamin concentrations in dogs have proved of considerable value for the identification and characterisation of chronic small intestinal disorders, but the microbiological assays used are time-consuming and technically demanding. Dual isotope radio-assays are more convenient and have been developed for the determination of folate and cobalamin in human beings. This study has evaluated such an assay for the determination of serum folate and cobalamin concentrations in dogs by direct comparison with microbiological assays used previously. Assays were performed on samples from 77 dogs, including controls and animals with confirmed or suspected chronic small intestinal disease. Regression analysis demonstrated a significant relationship between the two assays for serum folate concentrations (R=0–85; P=0–0001) and a definite trend for radioassay to give lower results than bioassay. There was also a significant relationship between bioassay and radioassay data for serum cobalamin (R=0–91; P=0–0001) with comparable absolute values for these two assays. Radioassay of serum samples from 31 clinically healthy dogs gave control ranges of 3–7 to 8-8 4mUg/litre for folate and 205 to 490 ng/litre for cobalamin. These ranges were similar to those calculated by comparison with the established ranges for bioassay using regression analysis, which predicted ranges of 4-4 to 8-4 μg/litre and 217 to 398 ng/litre for radioassay of serum folate and cobalamin, respectively. These data indicate that a dual isotope radioassay of serum folate and cobalamin may be used for dogs, and emphasise the need for laboratories to validate and establish their own control ranges for different assays. 相似文献
