Evolution of sea surface temperature in the somali basin during the southwest monsoon of 1979

Satellite and research vessel observations of sea surface temperature during the southwest monsoon of 1979 show the development of large wedge-shaped areas of cold water along the Somali coast at both 5 degrees and 10 degrees N during June and July. The cold water associated with the large northern and southern Somali eddy systems could be traced several hundred kilometers offshore. By late August the cold wedge at 5 degrees N translated northeastward as far as 10 degrees N at speeds of 15 to 30 centimeters per second, indicating a coalescence of the systems.     

Species hybridization in Trifolium

This investigation confirms the existence of a high degree of incompatibility between species of Trifolium. Two techniques were developed in an attempt to overcome the barriers to hybridization. The first deals with the use of grafting as a screening technique for compatible genotypes, and the second is an embryo culture method for salvaging hybrid embryos which would otherwise abort. The value of these methods is discussed, and the results are compared with those from hybridizations of non-grafted material and of seed set without artificial embryo culture. Hybrids were obtained from three species combinations at different levels of ploidy.     

Conservation assessment of British limestone pavements based on floristic criteria

The total British area of limestone pavement is very small, yet this scarce resource is being destroyed to supply decorative stone. Its scientific interest is both geological and botanical. Exploiting an exhaustive survey, a weighted index was developed for assessing the conservation value of limestone pavements based on their deep grike floras. Using weighted indices, 27 sites in Cumbria, Gwynedd, Lancashire, North Yorkshire and Skye were identified as important for the conservation of limestone pavement floras.
