Background
In the last few years stud farms have experienced increasing problems with Parascaris equorum infections in foals despite intensive deworming programs. This has led to the question as to whether the anthelmintic drugs used against this parasite are failing. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of ivermectin, fenbendazole and pyrantel on the faecal output of ascarid eggs of foals.Methods
A Faecal Egg Count Reduction Test (FECRT) was performed on nine large studs in Sweden. Anthelmintic drugs were given orally and faecal samples were examined for ascarid eggs on the day of deworming and 14 days later. Faecal Egg Count Reductions (FECRs) were calculated on arithmetic means of transformed individual FECRs and on arithmetic means of individual FECRs.Results
Seventy-nine (48%) out of a total of 165 foals sampled were positive for P. equorum eggs before deworming and 66 of these met the criteria for being used in the efficacy assessment. It was shown that there was no, or very low activity of ivermectin on the output of ascarid eggs in the majority of the foals, whereas for fenbendazole and pyrantel it was >90%.Conclusion
Ivermectin resistance was shown in 5 out of 6 farms. Therefore, ivermectin should not be the drug of choice in the control of P. equorum infections in foals. According to the results of this study, fenbendazole or pyrantel are still effective and should be used against this parasite. 相似文献52.
Dividing regions into manageable landscape units presents special problems in landscape ecology and land management. Ideally,
a landscape should be large enough to capture a broad range of vegetation, environmental and disturbance dynamics, but small
enough to be useful for focused management objectives. The purpose of this study was to determine the optimal landscape size
to summarize ecological processes for two large land areas in the southwestern United States. We used a vegetation and disturbance
dynamics model, LANDSUMv4, to simulate a set of nine scenarios involving systematically varied topography, map resolution,
and model parameterizations of fire size and fire frequency. Spatial input data were supplied by the LANDscape FIRE Management
Planning System (LANDFIRE) prototype project, an effort that will provide comprehensive and scientifically credible mid-scale
data to support the National Fire Plan. We analyzed output from 2,000 year simulations to determine the thresholds of landscape
condition based on the variability of burned area and dominant vegetation coverage. Results show that optimal landscape extent
using burned area variability is approximately 100 km2 depending on topography, map resolution, and model parameterization. Variability of dominant vegetation area is generally
higher and the optimal landscape sizes are larger in comparison to those features determined from burned area. Using the LANDFIRE
project as a case study, we determined landscape size and map resolution for a large mapping project, and showed that optimal
landscape size depends upon geographical, ecological, and management context.

Volatile oil extracts of fennel seeds (Foeniculum vulgare Mill.) and thyme leaves (Thymus vulgaris L.) were obtained by simultaneous distillation-extraction (SDE) and supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). In general, fennel oil extracted by SDE and SFE showed similar compositions, with trans-anethole, estragole, and fenchone as the main components. In contrast, thymol and p-cymene, the most abundant compounds in thyme leaves, showed big differences, with generally higher amounts of monoterpenes obtained by SDE. However, in this case, the differences between the extracts were higher. Key odorants of fennel seeds determined by gas chromatography-olfactometry (GC-O) showed similar patterns when applying SDE and SFE. trans-Anethole (anise, licorice), estragole (anise, licorice, sweet), fenchone (mint, camphor, warm), and 1-octen-3-ol (mushroom) were the most intense odor compounds detected in fennel extracts. Thymol and carvacrol, with oregano, thyme, and spicy notes, were identified as key compounds contributing to the aroma of thyme leaves. 相似文献

Gap formation is suggested as an alternative forest management approach to avoid extreme changes in the N cycle of forest ecosystems caused by traditional management practises. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of gap formation on N availability in beech litter and mineral soil on sites, which experienced only little soil disturbance during tree harvest. N pools, litter decomposition, and N mineralization rates in mineral soil were studied in two gaps (17 and 30 m in diameter) in a 75-year-old managed European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) forest in Denmark and related to soil temperature (5 cm depth) and soil moisture (15 cm depth). Investigations were carried out during the first 2 years after gap formation in measurement plots located along the north-south transect running through the centre of each gap and into the surrounding forest.An effect of gap size was found only for soil temperatures and litter mass loss: soil temperatures were significantly increased in the northern part of the large gap during the first year after gap formation, and litter mass loss was significantly higher in the smaller gap. All other parameters investigated revealed no effect of gap size. Nitrification, net mineralization, and soil N concentrations tended to be increased in the gaps. Cumulative rates of net mineralization were two fold higher in the gaps during the growing season (June-October), but a statistically significant increase was found only for soil NH4-N concentrations during this period. Forest floor parameters (C:N ratios, mass loss, N release) were not significantly modified during the first year after gap formation, neither were the total C content nor the C:N ratio in mineral soil at 0-10 cm depth. 相似文献

Mus81-Eme1 endonuclease has been implicated in the rescue of stalled replication forks and the resolution of meiotic recombination intermediates in yeast. We used gene targeting to study the physiological requirements of Mus81 in mammals. Mus81-/- mice are viable and fertile, which indicates that mammalian Mus81 is not essential for recombination processes associated with meiosis. Mus81-deficient mice and cells were hypersensitive to the DNA cross-linking agent mitomycin C but not to gamma-irradiation. Remarkably, both homozygous Mus81-/- and heterozygous Mus81+/- mice exhibited a similar susceptibility to spontaneous chromosomal damage and a profound and equivalent predisposition to lymphomas and other cancers. These studies demonstrate a critical role for the proper biallelic expression of the mammalian Mus81 in the maintenance of genomic integrity and tumor suppression. 相似文献

Circadian clocks are believed to confer an advantage to plants, but the nature of that advantage has been unknown. We show that a substantial photosynthetic advantage is conferred by correct matching of the circadian clock period with that of the external light-dark cycle. In wild type and in long- and short-circadian period mutants of Arabidopsis thaliana, plants with a clock period matched to the environment contain more chlorophyll, fix more carbon, grow faster, and survive better than plants with circadian periods differing from their environment.
