Data from the Global Oscillation Network Group (GONG) project and other helioseismic experiments provide a test for models of stellar interiors and for the thermodynamic and radiative properties, on which the models depend, of matter under the extreme conditions found in the sun. Current models are in agreement with the helioseismic inferences, which suggests, for example, that the disagreement between the predicted and observed fluxes of neutrinos from the sun is not caused by errors in the models. However, the GONG data reveal subtle errors in the models, such as an excess in sound speed just beneath the convection zone. These discrepancies indicate effects that have so far not been correctly accounted for; for example, it is plausible that the sound-speed differences reflect weak mixing in stellar interiors, of potential importance to the overall evolution of stars and ultimately to estimates of the age of the galaxy based on stellar evolution calculations.  相似文献

An ultrastructural study to the corpus luteum (CL) from 263 non pregnant female cattle slaughtered in slaughter-houses of León (Spain) was done. The luteal cells are classified in five types, noted with roman numbers. We made a comparison between these cells and the cells described in the literature. We believe that luteal cells have a development from type I to V, the first type is the principal inside the developing CL. The types II and III are in the mature CL, and the two last types are in the degenerating CL. It will be the same cell in different stages of development. We did not find characteristic structures to differentiate luteal cells originating from the granulosa or the theca.  相似文献

A virus was isolated from mink showing clinical and pathological signs of mink enteritis. This virus was identified as mink enteritis virus (MEV) from results of serological tests, determination of its density in CsCl (1.415 g cm?3), and morphology, including size (20 nm in diameter). The isolate was designated MEV-S. In contrast to other known MEV strains, the MEV-S isolate has no haemagglutinating (HA) activity with swine red blood cells (RBCs) at 4°C and pH 6.8.Neither was there any HA at other pH values and temperatures, or when worse, bovine and rhesus monkey RBC's were used.  相似文献

1. The gastrointestinal (GI) emptying of the chick embryo was studied in days 19 and 20 of incubation using radioactive (14C-PEG-4000) and coloured (Evans Blue dye) tracer markers. 2. Following administration by oral cannula, the percentages of tracer marker recovered in the yolk sac and the GI tract showed the existence of a GI motor pattern in both 19 d and 20 d chick embryos and suggested that the fluids drunk by the chick embryo during the final days of incubation could have reached the yolk sac from the GI tract via the vitelline diverticulum.  相似文献

Hydatidosis (cystic echinococcosis) constitutes a serious public health problem in the Province of Rio Negro, Argentina. In the present work it was intended to evaluate the prevalence of the canine echinococcosis in rural areas of the Province of Rio Negro and studied the reinfection rate in dogs after treatment with Praziquantel during the period 1980-1997. A total of 496 dogs were studied in 18 canine concentrations in order to establish the initial prevalence rate which was 42.3%. From 1980 onward dogs should have been systematically treated with anthelmintic every 2 months in rural areas and every 6 months in urban areas. We estimated that approximately 65% of dogs were treated. To determine the reinfection rate, 476 dogs (1984) and 598 dogs (1996) were studied after anthelmintic treatment during two sequential time periods (0-45; 46-90 days). In both cases treated animals were compared with untreated dogs. Prevalences were 3.5%, 6.7% and 21.3% in 1984 and 0.8%, 4.0% and 10.0% in 1996. For the purpose of surveillance a total number of 21,444 dogs were studied during 18 years. Prevalence of Echinococcus granulosus decreased significantly in the first year from 42.3% to 6.1%.  相似文献

The present study was conducted in a full-scale activated-sludge plant to evaluate the influence of detergent concentration on the development of ciliated protozoa during the biological treatment of wastewater. Density and diversity of ciliates were determined in relation to detergents entering the aeration tanks. Results suggest that a threshold of detergent concentration in wastewater entering the aeration tanks for an efficient biological process is 10 mg L?1. Values higher than this, yield a significant decrease in ciliate populations.  相似文献

A number of studies have provided quantitative assessments of the potential climate change impacts on crop production in Asia. Estimates take into account (a) uncertainty in the level of climate change expected, using a range of climate change scenarios; (b) physiological effects of carbon dioxide on the crops; and (c) different adaptive responses. In all cases, the effects of climate change induced by increased atmospheric carbon dioxide depended on the counteracting effects among higher daily evapotranspiration rates, shortening of crop growth duration, and changes in precipitation patterns, as well as the effects of carbon dioxide on crop growth and water-use efficiency. Although results varied depending on the geographical locations of the regions tested, the production of rice (the main food crop in the region) generally did not benefit from climate change. In South and Southeast Asia, there is concern about how climate change may affect El Niño/Southern Oscillation events, since these play a key role in determining agricultural production. Furthermore, problems arising from variability of water availability and soil degradation are currently major challenges to agriculture in the region. These problems may be exacerbated in the future if global climate change projections are realized. Many studies have considered strategies for improving agricultural management, based on the optimization of crop management decisions. Climate change analyses could be further strengthened by economic studies that integrate the potential use of natural resources across sectors.  相似文献

Concentrations of PCBs, PCDDs, and PCDFs, heavy metals (Cu, Cd, Zn, Pb, and Hg), and arsenic have been determined in a great variety of food samples purchased in different markets across the city of Huelva, located in southwestern Spain and under strong industrial activity. All samples analyzed presented concentrations below the maximum allowed by the European Community regarding PCDD/Fs, with the exception of samples within the meat group. An estimation of the daily intake resulted in 1.15 pg of WHO(PCDD/Fs)-TEQ/kg of body weight/day for a 70 kg person and 2.63 pg of WHO-TEQ/kg of body weight/day when PCBs were included, therefore accounting for a similar or even higher percentage than PCDD/Fs and showing the importance of their inclusion in monitoring studies. Meat and meat products, together with vegetable oils and dairy products, were the major food groups contributing to the estimated daily intake. For heavy metals and arsenic, the concentrations found were under the value proposed by European regulations, and estimated daily intakes were well below those proposed by the WHO for all metals investigated. PAHs have been analyzed in food samples from marine origin, values ranging from 8.22 to 71.4 ng/g of fresh weight. Pyrene was the most abundant compound, accounting for >80% in the samples investigated. The most carcinogenic PAHs, such as benzo[a]pyrene and dibenz[a,h]anthracene, were in all cases below the limits of detection. Therefore, the samples analyzed in this survey can be considered as safe with regard to the levels obtained and the in-force legislation.  相似文献

Sources of resistance to Fusarium spp. are needed to develop maize hybrids resistant to the accumulation of fungal mycotoxins in the grain. In a search for resistant germplasm in 1999 and 2000, a set of Argentinian maize populations was evaluated in Ottawa, Canada, for resistance to ear rots after inoculation with local isolates of Fusarium verticillioides and F. graminearum. Sixteen of these populations, varying in observed resistance levels, were re-evaluated in 2003 and 2004 in Pergamino, Argentina, using local isolates of the same fungi. Conidial suspensions of each fungal species were inoculated into the silk channel of primary ears. Disease severity was assessed after physiological maturity using a scale based on the percentage of visibly infected kernels. Genotype effect was more important than genotype-by-fungal species or genotype-by-fungal species-by-environment interaction effects. In addition, disease severity levels associated with each fungal species were positively correlated (P < 0.05) (r = 0.90, r = 0.81, r = 0.87 and r = 0.53, in Ottawa 1999 and 2000, and Pergamino 2003 and 2004, respectively). Populations ARZM 01107, ARZM 07138, ARZM 10041, ARZM 13031, ARZM 16002 and Pora INTA exhibited the highest and most stable resistance to both species. Considering that disease resistance exhibited low specificity to the environment and to the fungal species in evaluations conducted in a wide range of environments and with fungal isolates collected from different hemispheres, the most resistant populations are potential sources of genes for stable resistance to these Fusarium spp.  相似文献

People in vast areas of the tropics suffer from vitamin A deficiency, resulting in progressive eye damage and eventually leading to blindness. Improving the content of vitamin A precursors in staple crops could alleviate or solve such a problem. The objective of this work was to study the range of variability for carotene content in a sub-set of the global cassava germplasm collection, and to determine the inheritance of carotenes, as well as their stability in response to different processing methodologies. Genotypes with more than 2 mg carotenes/100 g of fresh roots have been selected as parental material for population development. Although root colour is highly correlated with carotene content, a quantitative evaluation of genotypes selected by colour is required in order to increase the efficiency of selection. Relatively few major genes are involved in the determination of carotene accumulation in cassava roots. Stability of carotenes in response to different processing methods is genotypically dependant, representing a trait to be evaluated after selecting for high carotene concentration in fresh roots. The results from this work have provided the basis for defining future strategies for the improvement of the nutritional quality of cassava.
