Meta-analyses reveal that fast-growing species have a greater growth response to elevated CO(2) than slow-growing species. It is unknown whether this is a direct response or whether inter-specific differences in growth are simply correlated with other physiological or morphological differences among species that affect the growth response to CO(2). Here we use intra-specific variation in Picea glauca to examine the mechanistic basis for this relationship. Relative growth rate (RGR) of 29 genotypes grown at ambient (370 μl l(-1)) or elevated (740 μl 1(-1)) CO(2) was measured. Physiological and morphological traits describing differences in allocation, canopy structure, stomatal function and photosynthesis were determined. Most variation in RGR (74%) was explained by traits associated with canopy structure. Although there was a strong correlation between RGR(740) and RGR(370), we found no evidence that genotypes that grew fast at ambient CO(2) had a greater relative growth response to CO(2). Given that the pattern found at the intra-specific level differed from that reported at the inter-specific level, our results suggest that RGR per se does not affect the growth response to CO(2). This study determined the distribution and zoonotic potential of Giardia duodenalis assemblage types among canine and feline fecal samples from Ontario. The effectiveness of Giardia assemblage typing methods by sequencing the genes of small subunit ribosomal RNA (ssu-rRNA), β-giardin (bg), glutamate dehydrogenase (gdh), and triose phosphate isomerase (tpi) was evaluated simultaneously. From 2008 to 2010, 118 canine and 15 feline Giardia positive fecal samples were tested. The ssu-rRNA sequencing method typed 64% (75/118) and 87% (13/15) of the Giardia-positive canine and feline samples, respectively. Among the typeable samples, 68% (51/75) of canine samples contained G. duodenalis assemblage D and 31% (23/75) contained G. duodenalis assemblage C (both non-zoonotic assemblage types). Only 1% (1/75) of the typeable canine samples contained a potentially zoonotic assemblage B. Nobiletin (NOB) and tangeretin (TAN), two of the main polymethoxylated flavones (PMFs) in citrus, influence a number of key biological pathways in mammalian cells. Although the impacts of NOB and TAN on glucose homeostasis and cholesterol regulation have been investigated in human clinical trials, much information is still lacking about the metabolism and oral bioavailability of these compounds in animals. In this study, NOB and TAN were administered to rats by gavage and intraperitoneal (ip) injection, and the blood serum concentrations of these compounds and their main metabolites were monitored by high-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (HPLC-ESI-MS). In addition to the administered compounds, two metabolites of TAN and eight metabolites of NOB were detected and measured over 24 h. With identical oral doses, nearly 10-fold higher absorption of NOB occurred compared to TAN. For both compounds, maximum levels of glucuronidated metabolites occurred in the blood serum at later time points (~5-8 h) compared to the earlier T(max) values for NOB and TAN. In most cases the glucuronides occurred at substantially higher concentrations than the aglycone metabolites. A 1 yr old male castrated Yorkshire terrier was referred after ingesting magnets. Dehydration, fever, tachycardia, and abdominal pain were noted on physical examination. Abdominal radiographs revealed two radiopaque foreign objects in close proximity to each other with decreased abdominal detail. Surgical exploration identified magnets adhered together in the omentum with perforations present in the transverse colon and stomach. The perforations were closed and a Jackson-Pratt continuous suction drain was placed. Septic peritonitis secondary to intestinal perforation from magnet ingestion was successfully treated with a combination of surgery and a closed suction drain. 相似文献
