Skeletal muscle fiber is largely classified into two types: type 1 (slow‐twitch) and type 2 (fast‐twitch) fibers. Meat quality and composition of fiber types are thought to be closely related. Previous research showed that overexpression of constitutively active peroxisome proliferator‐activated receptor (PPAR)δ, a nuclear receptor present in skeletal muscle, increased type 1 fibers in mice. In this study, we found that hexane extracts of Yamabushitake mushroom (Hericium erinaceus) showed PPARδ agonistic activity in vitro. Eight‐week‐old C57BL/6J mice were fed a diet supplemented with 5% (w/w) freeze‐dried Yamabushitake mushroom for 24 hr. After the treatment period, the extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscles were excised. The Yamabushitake‐supplemented diet up‐regulated the PPARδ target genes Pdk4 and Ucp3 in mouse skeletal muscles in vivo. Furthermore, feeding the Yamabushitake‐supplemented diet to mice for 8 weeks resulted in a significant increase in muscle endurance. These results indicate that Yamabushitake mushroom contains PPARδ agonistic ligands and that dietary intake of Yamabushitake mushroom could activate PPARδ in skeletal muscle of mice. Progressive muscle weakness beginning at 6 months of age was observed in a male Persian-mix cat. Muscle atrophy and joint contracture progressed over the next 3 years. The cat had developed gait difficulty at 8 months of age. The cat died at age of 5 years and 3 months due to an acute respiratory disorder. The clinical, laboratory, necropsy and histopathological findings of the cat were consistent with those of muscular dystrophy. The cat was diagnosed as having laminin alpha2 (merosin)-deficient muscular dystrophy on the basis of immunohistochemical findings. The cat was born in an inbred colony, and another related cat exhibited similar clinical signs. Few cases of laminin alpha2-deficient muscular dystrophy have been reported in cats, and this report provides additional information about the disease. 相似文献

The diameter growth of trees may vary depending on the tree size, species and other tree-related factors. However, such variation is challenging to consider while estimating the growth response to weather conditions. This study investigated the effects of the weather conditions and variations in tree factors on diameter growth in a mature forest. In particular, we focused on diameter growth in June, the month of active diameter growth. We recorded the monthly diameter growth of 6 tree species for 7 years and constructed a generalized linear mixed model in which the mean growth was dependant on tree size, weather conditions, and the interaction between tree size and weather. 相似文献

To determine the mechanism of male-sterility Cryptomeria japonica tree Shindai3, the process of microspore development was observed under light and fluorescence microscopy. Microspore development
in the Shindai3 was normal until the tetrad stage, but separation of the microspores from the tetrads was not observed even
after callose had been degraded. In contrast to the microspore stage in a male-fertile tree, amorphous substances were observed
around tetrads in the Shindai3, and the amount of the amorphous substance increased from the middle of November to the middle
of December. The substances are hypothesized to prevent the separation of individual microspores from tetrads by inducing
adhesion between microspore cells within the tetrad or enclosing the tetrads. The form of the tetrads in the Shindai3 was
maintained until just before the pollen dispersal season, but they ultimately degenerated. The results of this study indicate
that the mechanism causing male sterility in Shindai3 differs from that previously reported for other male-sterile trees of

Primary hepatic neuroendocrine tumors (PHNETs) are rare in dogs, and limited information exists about the treatment of these tumors. A 12-year-old castrated male French bulldog was presented to our clinic with gastrointestinal signs. Diagnostic tests revealed increased hepatic enzyme levels, a mass in the hepatic quadrate lobe, multiple intrahepatic nodules, and enlarged hepatic hilar lymph nodes. The liver mass was diagnosed cytologically as a malignant epithelial tumor suspected to be of neuroendocrine origin. The dog was treated with single-agent toceranib phosphate (TOC) and survived 25.1 months after the initial presentation. On necropsy, a liver mass was found and was subsequently diagnosed as a PHNET on histopathology. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of long-term survival in a dog with PHNET treated with TOC. 相似文献

Understanding seasonal changes in photosynthetic characteristics of canopy leaves is indispensable for modeling the carbon balance in forests. We studied seasonal changes in gas exchange characteristics that are related to the temperature dependence of photosynthesis in canopy leaves of Quercus crispula Blume, one of the most abundant species in cool-temperate forests in Japan. Photosynthetic rate and ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate (RuBP) carboxylation capacity (V(cmax)) at 20 degrees C increased from June to August and then decreased in September. The activation energy of V(cmax), a measure of the temperature dependence of V(cmax), was highest in summer, indicating that V(cmax) was most sensitive to leaf temperature at this time. The activation energy of V(cmax) was significantly correlated with growth temperature. Other parameters related to the temperature dependence of photosynthesis, such as intercellular CO(2) partial pressure and temperature dependence of RuBP regeneration capacity, showed no clear seasonal trend. It was suggested that leaf senescence affected the balance between carboxylation and regeneration of RuBP. The model simulation showed that photosynthetic rate and its optimal temperature were highest in summer. 相似文献

Research was conducted to study interrelationships between agronomic and seed characters and their direct and indirect effects on seed yield per plant under normal and limited irrigation regimes. Two field experiments were conducted in 1996 at the Experimental Station of College of Agriculture, Shiraz University at Badjgah. Fourteen sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) cultivars consisting of eight hybrids and six open pollinated varieties were grown in two randomized complete block designs with four replications. Two experiments differed in respect to irrigation regime. The cause and effect relationships of 12 different characters were assessed. Most of the characters including seed yield and oil content showed considerable genotypic and phenotypic variations. Water stress significantly decreased yield and its components, however, oil content did not differ significantly. Genotypic and phenotypic correlations revealed that seed yield had significant positive correlations with days to flowering, days to physiological maturity, head diameter, plant height, 1000-seed weight and oil yield under normal and limited irrigation. Seed yield had significant correlations with oil content and kernel percentage under normal irrigation regime, while these correlations were largely reduced under stress conditions and were not significant. The highest direct effect, was exhibited by 1000-seed weight and number of filled seeds per head in normal and limited irrigation environments. However, cause and effect relations of other traits with seed yield changed due to irrigation conditions. Direct effect of oil content was quite lower than its correlation with seed yield. The lowest direct effect was found for plant height and oil content under normal and stress environments, respectively. 相似文献
