Hematological values of peripheral blood were determined for bovine fetuses and calves of various ages. Erythrocyte values increased through gestation. Fetuses 100 days or older had total values within the ranges of those reported for normal adult cattle. Mature erythrocytes were not observed in embryos and only a few were observed in fetuses 40 days of age. Fetuses 250 days or older had only a few rubricytes (<10/100 WBC). Leukocytes were first identified in the peripheral blood of a 45-day old fetus. Absolute leukocyte values increased through gestation and reached maximum values shortly before parturition. Granulocytes were first observed at 130 days of gestation and reached maximum values near parturition.

Total serum protein and gamma-globulin concentrations of colostrum-deprived calves were similar to serum protein and gammaglobulin concentrations of fetuses older than 265 days and were lower than values for the colostrum-fed calves. The immunoelectrophoretic pattern of 59-day old fetuses, the earliest age at which serum samples were obtained, demonstrated albumin, an α1 globulin and a β globulin, possibly transferrin. Additional α and β globulins appeared in the older fetuses and by 175 days of gestation serum electophoretic patterns of the fetuses were similar to patterns normally found with adult bovine serum except for the absence of the gammaglobulins in fetal serum. Immunoglobulin M was detected in 39 of 95 fetal serum samples by radial diffusion and in 13 of 95 samples by immunoelectrophoresis. Immunoglobulin G was detected in ten of 95 fetal serum samples by radial diffusion and in six of 95 samples by immunoelectrophoresis.

In this study, a novel capsule technique was used to capture real-time pH readings from the gizzard over several hours, in response to different dietary treatments.

1. The first experiment was a preliminary study into capsule administration and pH recordings using 9 male Ross 308 broilers from 20 d. In the second experiment, broilers (576) were fed in two phases (0–21 and 21–42 d) with 4 treatment groups; low and adequate Ca and AvP diets with and without Quantum Blue phytase (1500 FTU/kg). Capsules were administered to 8 birds from each treatment group, pre and post diet phase change, with readings captured over a 2.5 h period.

2. Phytase addition improved body weight gain (BWG) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) of birds fed low dietary Ca, while having no significant effect on birds fed adequate Ca diets. Unexpectantly, diets with higher Ca levels gave a lower average gizzard pH compared to the low Ca diet. Phytase addition, irrespective of Ca level, increased average gizzard pH. Fluctuations in gizzard pH (0.6–3.8) were observed across all treatment groups. Higher frequencies of pH readings below pH 1.0 were seen in birds fed an adequate Ca diet and with phytase supplementation of a low Ca diet.

3. These results signify the potential use of capsule techniques to monitor real-time pH changes. The implication on gastric protein and fibre hydrolysis as a result of large fluctuations in pH should be considered.  相似文献

Portable accumulation chambers (PACs) enable gaseous emissions from small ruminants to be measured over a 50-min period; to date, however, the repeatability of consecutive days of measurement in the PAC has not been investigated. The objectives of this study were 1) to investigate the repeatability of consecutive days of gaseous measurements in the PAC, 2) to determine the number of days required to achieve precise gaseous measurements, and 3) to develop a prediction equation for gaseous emissions in sheep. A total of 48 ewe lambs (c. 10 to 11 mo of age) were randomly divided into four measurement groups each day, for 17 consecutive days. Gaseous measurements were conducted between 0800 and 1200 hours daily. Animals were removed from perennial ryegrass silage for at least 1 h before measurements in the PAC, and animals were assigned randomly to each of the 12 chambers. Methane (CH4; ppm) concentration, oxygen (O2; %), and carbon dioxide (CO2; %) were measured at three time points (0, 25, and 50 min after entry of the first animal into the first chamber). To quantify the effect of animal and day variation on gaseous emissions, between-animal, between-day, and error variances were calculated for each gaseous measurement using a linear mixed model. The number of days required to gain a certain precision (defined as the 95% confidence interval range) for each gaseous measurement was also calculated. For all three gases, the between-day variance (39% to 40%) accounted for a larger proportion of total variance compared with between-animal variance, while the repeatability of 17 consecutive days of measurement was 0.36, 0.31, and 0.23 for CH4, CO2, and O2, respectively. Correlations between consecutive days of measurement were strong for all three gases; the strongest correlation between day 1 and the remaining days for CH4, CO2, and O2 was 0.71 (days 1 and 6), 0.77 (days 1 and 2), and 0.83 (days 1 and 5), respectively. A high level of precision was achieved when gaseous measurements from PAC were taken over three consecutive days. The prediction equation overestimated gaseous production for all three gases: the correlations between actual and predicted gaseous output ranged from 0.67 to 0.71, with the r2 ranging from 0.45 to 0.71. The results from this study will aid the refinement of the protocol for the measurement of gaseous emissions in sheep using the PAC.  相似文献

Gravitational lensing is a powerful astrophysical and cosmological probe and is particularly valuable at submillimeter wavelengths for the study of the statistical and individual properties of dusty star-forming galaxies. However, the identification of gravitational lenses is often time-intensive, involving the sifting of large volumes of imaging or spectroscopic data to find few candidates. We used early data from the Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey to demonstrate that wide-area submillimeter surveys can simply and easily detect strong gravitational lensing events, with close to 100% efficiency.  相似文献

The effect of the quinone outside inhibitors (QoI) azoxystrobin and pyraclostrobin on yields of winter wheat where QoI resistant Mycosphaerella graminicola isolates were dominant was investigated in field trials in 2006 and 2007. Pyraclostrobin significantly increased yields by 1·57 t ha?1 in 2006 and 0·89 t ha?1 in 2007 when compared to the untreated controls, while azoxystrobin only provided a significant increase of 1·28 t ha?1 in 2006. These yield increases were associated with reduction in septoria tritici blotch (STB) development as determined by weekly disease assessments over a 7 week interval. The effect of pyraclostrobin on STB was studied in controlled environment experiments using wheat seedlings inoculated with individual M. graminicola isolates. Pyraclostrobin significantly reduced STB symptoms by up to 62%, whether applied 48 h pre‐ or post‐ inoculation with resistant M. graminicola isolates containing the cytochrome b mutation G143A. Extremely limited disease (<1%) was observed on similarly treated seedlings inoculated with an intermediately resistant isolate containing the cytochrome b mutation F129L, while no disease was observed on seedlings inoculated with a wild‐type isolate. Germination studies of pycnidiospores of M. graminicola on water agar amended with azoxystrobin or pyraclostrobin showed that neither fungicide inhibited germination of spores of resistant isolates containing the mutation G143A. However, pyraclostrobin significantly reduced germ tube length by up to 46% when compared with the untreated controls. Although the QoIs can no longer be relied upon to provide effective M. graminicola control, this study provides an insight into why QoIs still provide limited STB disease control and yield increases even in situations of high QoI resistance.  相似文献

Beef heifers (n = 48) were offered, daily, a 1.5 kg ration that contained 0, 69, 138, and 275 g of ruminally protected fish oil (RPFO) fortified with vitamin E (5000 IU/kg). The fatty acid profile of neutral (NL) and polar lipids (PL) of neck muscle was analyzed by GC-FID. Minced muscle was displayed in an 80% O(2):20% CO(2) atmosphere under simulated retail display conditions. Muscle α-tocopherol concentrations did not differ. For PL, the proportions of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) increased (P < 0.05, linearly and quadratically, respectively). For NL, the proportion of EPA was not affected but DHA increased linearly and quadratically (P < 0.05). Supplementation did not affect color stability of ground beef, but lipid oxidation was higher (P < 0.001) for 275 g of RPFO on day 10 of display. In conclusion, supplementation with RPFO increased muscle EPA and DHA with no effect on color stability while lipid oxidation was increased only at the highest level of supplementation, after prolonged display.  相似文献

In the lower Amazon River, suspended sediment is stored during rising stages of the river and resuspended during falling river stages. The storage and resuspension in the reach are related to the mean slope of the flood wave on the river surface; this slope is smaller during rising river stages than during falling stages. The pattern of storage and resuspension damps out the extreme values of high and low sediment discharge and tends to keep them near the mean value between 3.0 x 10(6) and 3.5 x 10(6) metric tons per day. Mean annual discharge of suspended sediment in the lower Amazon is between 1.1 x 10(9) and 1.3 x 10(9) metric tons per year.  相似文献
