Aspiration of barium-impregnated polyethylene spheres by a dog

This case report describes an 11-year-old Belgian Malinois dog with acute onset of cough caused by aspiration of barium-impregnated polyethylene spheres (BIPS) and pneumonia following an episode of suspected gastric dilation. Although bronchoscopic retrieval of the BIPS was largely unsuccessful, the dog recovered uneventfully, with most of the BIPS being coughed out and swallowed over a 1-month period. Aspiration of BIPS should be considered a potential complication of their administration. Furthermore, endoscopic removal of aspirated BIPS is challenging and may not be indicated because of their inert nature and possible self-clearance.     

Apparatus for pasteurising teat cup liners between cows in a herringbone parlour.

In a herringbone milking parlour, teat cup liners were deliberately contaminated in turn with Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Streptococcus agalactiae and Sterp uberis. Contamination was achieved by filling the liners with milk that contained 10(6) test organisms per ml. After the clusters had been back-flushed with water at 85 degrees C for five seconds, normal swabbing methods failed to recover any contaminating organisms from the teat liners in 56 tests out of 64. After 10 seconds back-flushing no recoveries were made in the same number of tests. The apparatus developed to effect this back-flushing for a particular herringbone parlour is described, with details of its routine use during milking. For a 100-cow herd, the running cost of such equipment using a five-second back-flush is estimated at no more than 4 pounds per week and, in its present form, would not add more than 10 seconds to the total milking time for each cow. Improvements in design of the apparatus, and in milking techniques arising from the routine use of the device, are also considered.     

白足蚜小蜂对桃蚜的取食和寄生功能反应及搜寻效应

为评估白足蚜小蜂Aphelinus albipodus对桃蚜Myzus persicae的防控效果,在室内测定了白足蚜小蜂对不同发育阶段桃蚜的功能反应和搜寻效应,并对种内干扰和分摊竞争强度进行了比较。结果表明:白足蚜小蜂对不同发育阶段桃蚜的取食量和寄生量均随着蚜虫密度增加而增加,取食量和寄生功能反应均符合HollingⅡ模型。白足蚜小蜂对桃蚜的理论最大取食量2.809头,瞬时攻击率0.218,处理时间0.023 d;白足蚜小蜂对3～4日龄桃蚜寄生量最大,为47.62头,寄生瞬时攻击率0.723,处理时间0.021 d。搜寻效应均随蚜虫密度的增加而下降,且与蚜虫密度呈负相关。白足蚜小蜂个体之间存在种内干扰作用,随着自身密度增加,单头寄生率相对下降,分摊竞争强度增大,干扰效应符合Hassell-varley模型。由功能反应、种内干扰等指标可见白足蚜小蜂对桃蚜具有较好的防控作用。     

Use of height-specific weigh tapes to estimate the bodyweight of horses

Two thousand horses of different ages, heights and breeds were divided into two height groups of up to 14.2 hands high (hh) and more than 14.2 hh, and weighed on a weighbridge; each horse then had its weight estimated by three weigh tapes, one height specific (tape 1 or 2, depending on the animal's height) and two for general use (tapes 3 and 4). For horses up to 14.2 hh, weigh tape 1 provided the most accurate estimate of mean (sd) bodyweight (100.5 [6.2] per cent), and weigh tapes 3 and 4 were 112 (6.8) and 97-0 (6.1) per cent accurate, respectively. For horses more than 14.2 hh, weigh tape 2 provided the most accurate estimate of bodyweight (98.6 [18.4] per cent), with weigh tapes 3 and 4 being 102.6 (17.4) and 90.8 (15.2) per cent accurate, respectively.
