In recent years, worldwide socioeconomic, ecological, and cultural changes have led to a paradigm shift in forestry and forest management. Some years ago, most forest enterprises exclusively focused on wood production, whereas today, forest management is expected to be multifunctional and economically as well as socially and ecologically sustainable [Harrison, S., Herbohn, J., Niskanen, A., 2002. Non-industrial, smallholder, small-scale and family forestry: what's in a name? Small-scale Forest Economics. Management and Policy 1 (1), 1–11; Schmithuesen, F., 2004. Forest policy developments in changing societies — political trends and challenges to research. In this context, non-timber forest products (NTFPs) such as forest honey, mushrooms, or berries could gain importance as an additional source of income for the forestry sector. To assess the market potential of NTFPs in Switzerland, two corresponding surveys were conducted. A consumer survey (N = 897) conducted in six cities in Switzerland investigated the purchase of Swiss NTFPs, consumer preferences, and demand potentials. An additional survey of sellers of NTFPs (N = 105) looked at these aspects from a complementary perspective. The results showed that there is a high esteem and considerable demand potential for such products among urban consumers. Food products were mentioned most frequently. Both consumers and sellers considered quality and environmental friendliness the most important attributes of NTFPs. Structural and organizational innovations and considerable marketing efforts and sales promotion would be required to expand the market for Swiss NTFP, however. Our results indicate that certification of the products' origin, environmental performance, and quality could support such efforts and that recreational and ecological forest services have a synergetic potential for the marketing of NTFPs.  相似文献

The formation of 4-vinylguaiacol, guaiacol, and phenol during coffee roasting was monitored in real-time, using resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization and time-of-flight mass spectrometry. A model is proposed, based on two connected reaction channels. One channel, termed the "low activation energy" channel, consists of ester hydrolysis of 5-FQA followed by decarboxylation of the ferulic acid to form 4-vinylguaiacol, and finally polymerization at the vinyl group to form partly insoluble polymers (coffee melanoidins). The second "high activation energy" channel opens up once the beans have reached higher temperatures. It leads to formation of guaiacol, via oxidation of 4-vinylguaiacol, and subsequently to phenol and other phenolic VOCs. This work aims at developing strategies to modify the composition of coffee flavor compounds based on the time-temperature history during roasting.  相似文献

Dawn's global mapping of Vesta reveals that its observed south polar depression is composed of two overlapping giant impact features. These large basins provide exceptional windows into impact processes at planetary scales. The youngest, Rheasilvia, is 500 kilometers wide and 19 kilometers deep and finds its nearest morphologic analog among large basins on low-gravity icy satellites. Extensive ejecta deposits occur, but impact melt volume is low, exposing an unusual spiral fracture pattern that is likely related to faulting during uplift and convergence of the basin floor. Rheasilvia obliterated half of another 400-kilometer-wide impact basin, Veneneia. Both basins are unexpectedly young, roughly 1 to 2 billion years, and their formation substantially reset Vestan geology and excavated sufficient volumes of older compositionally heterogeneous crustal material to have created the Vestoids and howardite-eucrite-diogenite meteorites.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate changes of total concentrations and various extract-defined Al and heavy metal fractions in Slovak agricultural soils during the last 25 years. We compared 7 stored soil samples collected between 1966 and 1970 with samples collected in 1994 at the same sites. Seven fractions of Al, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn were determined with a sequential extraction procedure in all samples. Total concentrations of Cd, Zn, Mn, Ni, and Cu were lower in the 1994 samples; those of Al, Fe, Pb, and Cr were higher. Based on the initial concentrations, the average total concentration changes were: Cd(-10,3%)<Zn(-7,2%)<Mn(-4,8%)<Ni(-2,3%)<Cu(-1,4%)<Al(+2,1%)<Fe(+2,9%)<Cr(+7,4%)<Pb(+8,3%). This row is consistent with the decrease in metal mobility. The differences in salt-extractable metals showed the same pattern; however, changes were more pronounced than for total concentrations. The results suggest that decreases during the last 25 years are caused by higher leaching than deposition rates and increases vice versa. The highest increase in Cr and Pb concentrations is observed in the EDTA-extractable fraction, which mainly characterizes organically bound metals.  相似文献

The decomposition of atmospheric hydrogen in different types of soil was measured. The decomposition of H2 was apparently a first-order reaction. H2 decomposition activity was proportional to the amount of soil with maximum activities at soil water contents of approx. 6–11% (w/w). The activity was lower under anaerobic conditions, but was constant between 1–20% O2. It was destroyed by autoclaving and was partially inactivated by fumigation with NH3, CHC13 or acetone, by u.v. irradiation and by treatment with NaCN or NaN3, indicating that biological processes in the soil were responsible for the observed H2 decomposition. Treatment of soil with toluene or CHCl3 caused only a partial inactivation. Incubation of soil in the presence of streptomycin or actidione reduced H2 decomposition by less than 50%, whereas CO consumption was abolished. The H2 decomposition rates showed H2 saturation curves with apparent Michaelis-Menten kinetics. Cooperative effects were not observed. Vmax was reached at approx. 200 μl1?1. The Km values for H2 were in the range of 30μl 1?1, but increased to higher values, when the soil had been pretreated with high H2 mixing ratios. Apparently, the observed H2 decomposition by soil is not only due to the activity of viable microorganisms, but soil enzymes as well.  相似文献

During Cassini's close flyby of Enceladus on 14 July 2005, the High Rate Detector of the Cosmic Dust Analyzer registered micron-sized dust particles enveloping this satellite. The dust impact rate peaked about 1 minute before the closest approach of the spacecraft to the moon. This asymmetric signature is consistent with a locally enhanced dust production in the south polar region of Enceladus. Other Cassini experiments revealed evidence for geophysical activities near Enceladus' south pole: a high surface temperature and a release of water gas. Production or release of dust particles related to these processes may provide the dominant source of Saturn's E ring.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Management of grassland may affect the dynamics of soil organic carbon (SOC). Objectives were to analyze the effect of different harvesting frequencies and nitrogen fertilization regimes on SOC and total N stocks in a field trial on a sandy loam to loamy sand soil of a grassland site near Kiel (Germany). Additionally, effects on microbial biomass C (Cmic) and ergosterol (as proxy for fungi) contents, water-stable aggregate size-classes and density fractions were studied. In the surface soil (0–10 cm), SOC and total N stocks, amounts of large water-stable macroaggregates (> 2000 µm) and contents of Cmic and ergosterol were significantly higher under a five cut regime. Cmic (rSpearman = 0.61) and ergosterol contents (rSpearman = 0.67) were correlated with amounts of large water-stable macroaggregates suggesting that fungi and microbial biomass play an important role in binding of small macroaggregates into large macroaggregates. The free light fraction of SOM showed significantly higher C concentrations under three cut compared to five cut at 30–60 cm, presumably related to the C/N ratio and the decomposability of root litter. This study indicates the importance of cutting frequency on SOC and total N stocks, amounts of large macroaggregates and contents of Cmic and ergosterol.  相似文献

Large sized biopores (diameter >2 mm) in the subsoil can be created by tap roots, which leave voids after their decay, or by the burrowing activity of anecic earthworms which may benefit from the temporary lack in tillage in perennial cropping systems. However, the interactions between root growth and earthworm activity in the process of biopore formation during perennial ley cropping are not well understood. The aim of this field study was to quantify the development of the abundance of the anecic earthworm Lumbricus terrestris and the biopore density during the cultivation of lucerne (Medicago sativa L.), chicory (Cichorium intybus L.) and tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) grown for either one, two or three years. An increased abundance of L. terrestris was already recorded after two years of continuous ley when compared with one year cultivation. The ley crop species had only minor influence on the abundance of L. terrestris. Biopore densities of both diameter classes under study (2–5 mm and >5 mm) were not significantly affected by the duration of ley cropping. In contrast, biopore densities were influenced by ley crop species. More biopores of diameter class 2–5 mm were recorded after chicory than after fescue. Lucerne cropping resulted in intermediate biopore density. Additionally, in an incubation experiment under field conditions, we quantified whether L. terrestris preferentially created new biopores or colonized abandoned, previously existing ones. After three weeks of incubation, one third of the adult individuals incubated in the experimental area created new biopores at 0.4 m soil depth. A similar percentage of individuals colonized previously existing biopores, partially widening the lumen of smaller sized biopores. The remaining individuals remained in the topsoil. Sub-adult individuals rarely formed new pores. Half of the introduced sub-adults remained in the topsoil. We conclude that in crop rotations new biopores can be generated during perennial ley cropping by taproot systems of ley crops, but that a two to three- year period without tillage is not sufficient for populations of anecic earthworms to make a marked contribution to biopore density in the subsoil. The relevance of anecic earthworms for altering physical and chemical properties of biopores during ley cropping still needs further investigation.  相似文献

Slurries of anoxic paddy soil were either freshly prepared or were partially depleted in endogenous electron donors by prolonged incubation under anaerobic conditions. Endogenous NO 3 was reduced within 4 h, followed by reduction of Fe3+ and SO 4 2– , and later by production of CH4. Addition of NO 3 slightly inhibited the production of Fe2+ in the depleted but not in the fresh paddy soil. Inhibition was overcome by the addition of H2, acetate, or a mixture of fatty acids (and other compounds), indicating that these compounds served as electron donors for the bacteria reducing NO 3 and/or ferric iron. Addition on NO 3 also inhibited the reduction of SO 4 2– in the depleted paddy soil. This inhibition was only overcome by H2, but not by acetate or a mixture of compounds, indicating that H2 was the predominant electron donor for the bacteria involved in NO 3 and/or SO 4 2– reduction. SO 4 2– reduction was also inhibited by exogenous Fe3+, but only in the depleted paddy soil. This inhibition was overcome by either H2, acetate, or a mixture of compounds, suggesting that they served as electron donors for reduction of Fe3+ and/or SO 4 2+ . CH4 production was inhibited by NO 3 both in depleted and in fresh paddy soil. Fe3+ and SO 4 2– also inhibited methanogenesis, but the inhibition was stronger in the depleted than in the fresh paddy soil. Inhibition of CH4 production was paralleled by a decrease in the steady state concentration of H2 to a level which provided a free enthalpy of less than G=–17 kJ mol-1 CH4 compared to more than G=–32 kJ mol-1 CH4 in the control. The results indicate that in the presence of exogenous fe3+ or SO 4 2+ , methanogenic bacteria were outcompeted for H2 by bacteria reducing Fe3+ or SO 4 2+ .Deceased on 27 December 1992  相似文献
