Veterinarians play a unique role in emergency preparedness and response, and federal agencies and academic institutions therefore allocate considerable resources to provide training to enhance their readiness. However, the level of preparedness of veterinarians in many rural regions is yet to be improved. This article reports an assessment of the bioterrorism preparedness, specifically the experience and training needs, of rural veterinarians in North Texas. The study employed a cross-sectional design with a study population that included all veterinarians (N = 352) in the 37 counties within Texas Department of State Health Services Regions 2 and 3. Data on veterinarians practicing or residing in the target region were obtained from the Texas State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners. The response rate was 35% (n = 121). Results indicate that chemical exposure was the condition most frequently seen and treated, followed by botulism and anthrax. The majority (80%) of respondents indicated that they had not previously participated in training related to bioterrorism preparedness, and many (41%) also indicated a willingness to participate in a state health department-initiated bioterrorism response plan. However, only 18% were confident in their ability to diagnose and treat bioterrorism cases. These results suggest that many North Texas veterinarians practicing in rural regions could benefit from additional training in bioterrorism preparedness and response. An area in particular need of further training is the diagnosis and treatment of Category A agents. Federal, state, and local health agencies are urged to increase training opportunities and to make additional efforts to involve veterinarians in bioterrorism preparedness and response.  相似文献

Abstract

Standardization work in the field of wood durability and preservation is managed, at the European level, by the technical committee TC 38 ‘Durability of wood and wood-based products’ of the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). Producing sustainable wood-based materials is challenging. A crucial aspect of their provision is reliable standards that take consideration of both the expectations of end-users and the broad set of parameters that may influence the service life of wooden components such as exposure to moisture, climatic variations and design. In order to reach these objectives, most CEN/TC 38 standards are currently being revised based on the recent scientific, technological and legal developments in the field of wood protection. There is an increasing need for performance classification of wood products in construction and to radically consider how wood durability test methods and standards can inform on service life and how they might be translated into a performance classification system. This paper describes the changes during the past 5–10 years in Europe and how the trajectory of standards development is now on a different pathway. Classification and service life demands are described as well as current approaches to consider key issues such as material resistance, moisture risk and adaptation of existing standards.  相似文献

The seroprevalence of caprine arthritis–encephalitis virus (CAEV) in the Cariri Region of Paraíba State, Brazil, was determined in 60 goat herds using the agar gel immunodiffusion test. The overall seroprevalence was 8.2%, with seropositivity in 21/60 (35%) herds and 13/15 (86.6%) municipalities. Bucks had a significantly higher frequency of infection (28.3%) than does (5.9%), and bucks that originated in other states had a significantly higher frequency of infection (76.5%) than those from Paraíba State (9.3%).  相似文献

Rice blast caused by Pyricularia oryzae is a devastating disease worldwide. In Vietnam, rice blast is especially severe in the Red River Delta in the North. The genetic diversity of 114 P. oryzae isolates collected from rice in 2001 in the Red River Delta and nine additional Vietnamese P. oryzae isolates was analysed using Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism (AFLP). DNA similarity and cluster analysis based on 160 polymorphic AFLP markers showed twelve different AFLP genetic groups among the 123 field isolates. Isolates collected from japonica hosts clustered separately from indica host isolates with at least 60% dissimilarity with little evidence for gene flow between the two populations. In the 2001 population originating from indica hosts, three genetic groups were predominant and represented 99% of the isolates sampled. One predominant clonal lineage represented 59% of the 2001 indica host population and was found in eleven provinces in the Red River Delta of North Vietnam. Significant genotype flow could be demonstrated between the indica population south of Red river and the indica population north of Red river. There was significant linkage disequilibrium between the AFLP loci within the indica population, indicating that this is not a random mating population. Pathogenicity tests of 25 isolates selected from the 12 AFLP groups on a set of 29 differential rice lines revealed two avirulent isolates and 23 pathotypes. The present work aimed to identify the key odorants of tomato sauces responsible for the flavor change during storage. Products made from paste or canned tomatoes were stored at 25 and 40 degrees C. Sensory properties and quantification of the key odorants were measured and correlated. Significant sensory changes appeared after 1 and 3 months at 25 degrees C in the respective dice and paste sauces (p < 0.01). The dice sauce was characterized by a steep loss of the sensory quality during the early storage and then by identical changes within the same time span at 25 and 40 degrees C. In the paste sauce the sensory deterioration was slower than for the dice sauce and occurred more extensively at 40 degrees C than at 25 degrees C. Correlation between sensory and instrumental data revealed that the source of sensory changes should be (E,E)-deca-2,4-dienal in the dice sauce. The sensory change in the paste sauce could be due to acetaldehyde, methylpropanal, 3-methylbutanal, oct-1-en-3-one, 3-methylbutanoic acid, deca-2,4-dienal, 2-methoxyphenol, and beta-damascenone.  相似文献

The agricultural activities practice often demands an intensive application of fertilizers. Phosphate and nitrogen fertilizers are the most employed in the corn growing areas of the central Mexico highlands. The first ones presents an uranium content ranging from 50 to 200 mg. kg?1 depending on the origin of the phosphate rock used in its production. It is crucial to analyze the rainwater, surface water, soil water at several depths, groundwater and soil to determine the simultaneous behavior of phosphate, nitrate and uranium, and their leaching in a specific agricultural land. Uranium concentration, 16 mg. kg?1, in the soil water was higher than that in the surface water and groundwater. The different concentrations are due to an unequal uranium distribution in the environment. The phosphate concentration, 37.4 mg. kg?1, diminished throughout the profile of the soil due to a sorption–precipitation process. The nitrates were leached toward groundwater after the application of fertilizers, but the nitrate concentration in it did not exceed the limit for drinking water.  相似文献
