Investigations of an enteric infection of cockatoos caused by an enterovirus-like agent

An enteric infection in cockatoos associated with a 30 nm diameter enterovirus-like agent seen in faeces and intestinal epithelial cells is described. The disease is characterised by intractable, profuse, mucoid diarrhoea, weight loss, dehydration and death. Lesions in the intestine consist of villous atrophy, villous fusion, enterocyte hyperplasia and, in some cases, chronic inflammation. Affected birds so far examined have concurrent psittacine beak and feather disease.     

Unconditional quantum teleportation

Quantum teleportation of optical coherent states was demonstrated experimentally using squeezed-state entanglement. The quantum nature of the achieved teleportation was verified by the experimentally determined fidelity Fexp = 0.58 +/- 0.02, which describes the match between input and output states. A fidelity greater than 0.5 is not possible for coherent states without the use of entanglement. This is the first realization of unconditional quantum teleportation where every state entering the device is actually teleported.     

Ecdysial failures in the cotton boll weevil: Synergism of diflubenzuron with juvenile hormone

The frequency and etiology of ecdysial failures occurring during the pupal-adult transformation of the cotton boll weevil, Anthonomus grandis, was studied after treatment with juvenile hormone (JH) and/or diflubenzuron (DFB). Failure at emergence was the result of inability of the adult insects to escape from their pupal exuviae. Teratogenic effects in the form of pupal-adult intermediates or adults with pupal characters were not obtained with JH or DFB treatment after the larval-pupal ecdysis. Combining JH with the DFB treatment yielded a synergistic response that increased the frequency of ecdysial failures about sevenfold when applied in the later pupal stages. The fine structure of the abdominal cuticle of adults experiencing ecdysial failure after treatment with JH as white-eyed pupae exhibited granular deposits within the lamellar region and interference with deposition of the nonlamellate endocuticle. DFB treatment of the earlier pupal stages interfered with deposition of the lamellate cuticle by eliminating or reducing the lamellar structure. It was concluded that the primary interaction of JH with DFB was that of extending or reinitiating DFB sensitivity in the later pharate adult. A secondary interaction may involve inhibition of cuticle hardening as both JH and DFB appear to inhibit the tanning process of adults treated as white-eyed pupae.     

Acute toxicity in five dogs after ingestion of a commercial snail and slug bait containing iron EDTA

This case series of five dogs describes the effects of ingesting large amounts of an iron EDTA snail-bait product. In all cases signs of toxicity occurred between 6 and 24 h after ingestion and included abdominal pain and haemorrhagic gastroenteritis. Two of the dogs had pretreatment serum iron levels measured and in both cases the levels were above normal limits. All of the dogs were treated with iron chelation therapy and supportive care including intravenous fluids, analgesics, gastric protectants and antibiotics. Chelation therapy with desferrioxamine mesylate did not cause adverse effects in any of the dogs and all survived to discharge. The effects of iron EDTA snail bait in dogs requires further study and minimum toxic doses need to be established.     

Experimental acidification of Little Rock Lake,Wisconsin

The controlled acidification of a two-basin lake is described. The lake was divided by a vinyl curtain in 1984; acidification of one basin began in 1985. Target pH values of 5.5, 5.0 and 4.5 are planned for 2-yr increments. Biotic and chemical responses and internal alkalinity generation are being studied. Baseline studies, initial results at pH 5.5, and predictions of lake responses to acidification are described.     

Variation of mineral nutrient contents of modern and heirloom cultivars of cabbage in different regimes of soil fertility

An improvement in the mineral nutrient contents of fruits and vegetables is needed to offset reported declines in concentrations of these elements in fruits and vegetables. The declines have been associated with the high productivity of modern cultivars and to depleted soil fertility. This research addressed differences in mineral nutrient concentrations between modern F1 hybrids and heirloom cultivars of cabbage (Brassica oleraceae var. capitata L.)and among fertilization practices with conventional chemical or organic fertilizers and compost. Crop production was greater with the chemical or organic fertilizers than with the compost. Mineral nutrient composition did not vary between modern or heirloom cultivars or among fertilization regimes but varied among cultivars, suggesting that cultivar selection could lead to production of nutrient-rich cabbage. Neither mass of heads nor days to maturation of crops affected nutrient composition.
