In the past decade reports of canine subcutaneous dirofilariosis, caused by the mosquito-transmitted nematode Dirofilaria repens, increased in number in several countries in Europe, along with a rise of human cases. Given the merit to the new approaches for the control and treatment of this infection, the present study evaluated the efficacy of a single application of the spot-on formulation containing imidacloprid 10%/moxidectin 2.5% (Advocate(?), Bayer Animal Health) in the elimination of D. repens microfilariaemia in naturally infected dogs. In September 2009, 18 dogs with a natural infection by D. repens were enrolled in the study. In October 2009 all the dogs were treated once with Advocate(?) and the presence/absence of circulating MF and skin lesions after treatment was evaluated monthly until April 2010. From November 2009 to April 2010 15 dogs scored negative for D. repens while one dog remained negative till March 2010 when it died. Two dogs had a recurrence of microfilariaemia in December 2009 and January 2010 respectively. Nine infected dogs showed skin lesions at the beginning of the trial, which disappeared after treatment in 7 dogs, whereas the other two symptomatic dogs did not show any dermatological improvement until the end of the trial even though they scored negative for D. repens microfilariae. This study demonstrated that a single dermal administration of Advocate(?) is effective in eliminating microfilariae of D. repens and likely has a certain degree of activity in killing subcutaneous adult worms as well. This study demonstrates the efficacy of Advocate(?) in the treatment of dermatitis caused by D. repens. Also, these results are of importance towards further control programs aiming to reduce the number of bites infectious for mosquitoes and the risk of infection for both humans and dogs. 相似文献

Gastric habronemosis of horses caused by Habronema microstoma and Habronema muscae (Nematoda, Spirurida) is characterized by catarrhal gastritis, diarrhoea, progressive weight loss and ulcers. Despite its importance in the equine industry and in clinical practice, knowledge of the epidemiology of this infection is still incomplete as diagnosis in live animals is challenging. A two-step semi-nested PCR assay using ribosomal DNA (rDNA) markers has recently been used for the molecular diagnosis in vivo of gastric habronemosis based on the detection of H. microstoma and/or H. muscae DNA in equine faeces. To evaluate the field efficacy of this assay, a molecular epidemiological survey was carried out on equid gastric habronemosis in central Italy. One hundred and fifty-three individual faecal samples were collected from live native horses and subjected to both coprological examination and the two-step semi-nested PCR. When flotation procedures were performed no horse tested positive for Habronema spp. larvated eggs while 96 animals (61.2%) were positive for other endoparasites (i.e. strongyles, oxyurids, ascarids). Two-step semi-nested PCR detected 86 samples (53.6%) that were positive for H. microstoma and/or H. muscae DNA. H. microstoma prevalences showed statistically significant differences; the highest prevalence was observed in horses infected by other gastrointestinal parasites and concomitantly by H. muscae. No statistical differences were found between the prevalence of Habronema spp. infection and sex, age, breeding management, and antiparasitic treatments. Soils generally vary in a quite complex way. To assess and model spatial variability, several variables can be sampled in addition to the target used to quantify and describe the main phenomenon under study. One of the major advantages of geostatistics over simpler spatialization methods is that sparsely observations of the primary attribute can be complemented by secondary attributes that are more densely sampled. Two methods were applied to incorporate dense secondary information: multicollocated cokriging, which restricts the neighbourhood to the only secondary data collocated with the available data of the primary variable and simple cokriging with varying local means related to crisp classes. The objective of this paper was to find the method that best improves the estimation of primary attributes through dense secondary information for the study area, which was the province of Siena in central Italy, an area of about 3820 km2. The pest Halyomorpha halys is a recent example of severe worldwide biological invasion. In Italy, after the first detection in 2012, it has rapidly spread and economic damage has already been reported in commercial fruit orchards, eliciting enormous concern for Italian agricultural production. As a long-term solution, biological control investigations are focusing on the potential of natural antagonists, such as generalist predators, in the invaded areas. Due to their biology, ecology and behavior, ants represent one such generalist predator potentially suitable for inflicting mortality on H. halys. In this research, Crematogaster scutellaris was used as a study model. Specifically, the effect of ant predatory behavior on the survival of all H. halys pre-imaginal stages was tested in the laboratory environment. The results suggest that C. scutellaris has a significant predatory impact on all H. halys pre-imaginal stages except for eggs. The reduction of survivorship is between 95 and 85% for instars 1 and 2 and between 38 and 52% for instars 3, 4 and 5. The different levels of predation success suggest that these ants could act as useful generalist predators when associated with other antagonists and/or other control strategies. Although further field investigations are needed, the potential of ants as biocontrol agents of invasive species in agroecosystems deserves consideration in integrated pest management programs. 相似文献

In June 2014, a male stray dog was recovered at Ente Nazionale di Protezione Animali
(ENPA) kennel of Manfredonia, Apulia region, showing oral bleeding and physical
prostration. The dog fell in a water canal and was trapped. During the clinical
examination, a specimen of leech was revealed into its oral cavity. The parasite, probably
entered by drinking unfiltered and contaminated water, has been identified as an adult of
aquatic leech Limnatis nilotica. Leeches could overrun wide variety of
animals, and few reports about blood sucking leech infestations in mammals are available
in literature. This paper describes here the first oral hirudiniasis in a dog in Italy and
highlights the possibility of human nasopharyngeal leech-related infection in Apulia

The effect of the pH of heating (6.3-7.3) on the composition of sera in reconstituted skimmed milks was investigated. A combination of SDS-PAGE analysis and size exclusion chromatography (SEC) combined with an original approach to the analysis of the SEC profiles was performed. The composition of the sera varied greatly when the pH of heating was adjusted below and above the natural pH of milk. The formation, composition, and concentration of heat-induced soluble complexes depended on the combination of the effect of adjusting the pH of the milk and the heat treatment. Two types of mechanism for the formation of soluble aggregates appeared to exist, depending on the pH of the milk. The first type results from the formation of WP/kappa-casein aggregates at the surface of the micelle, and these were detached partially into the serum in larger amount as the pH increased up to 6.7, where it reaches a maximum. The second type of complexes, whose amount increased as the pH of heating increased from 6.7 to 7.3, may be formed between caseins (kappa- but also perhaps some alpha(s)-casein) and aggregated WP resulting in complexes that are smaller in size and with a higher kappa-casein/whey protein ratio than the first type. 相似文献

Phylogenetic relationship of L. poessneckensis with three morphologically closely related species, i.e. L. macrosoma, L. helveticus and L. uroshis, was inferred by using maximum likelihood and maximum parsimony methods, with a female of Xiphinema diversicaudatum and a bivulval female of X. vuittenezi as outgroups. All multiple alignments yielded similar basic trees supporting the uniqueness of L. poessneckensis and the validity of the four Longidorus species identified using morphological characters. Phylogenetic analyses revealed that L. poessneckensis is more closely related to L. macrosoma and L. helveticus than to L. uroshis. High inter-population diversity (19%) was observed across the cox1 gene between two populations of L. poessneckensis. 相似文献

Xylella fastidiosa is an important insect-vectored bacterial plant pathogen with a wide host range, causing significant economic impact in the agricultural and horticultural industries. Once restricted to the Americas, severe European outbreaks have been discovered recently in Italy, Spain, France, and Portugal. The Italian outbreak, detected in Puglia in 2013, has spread over 100 km, killing millions of olive trees, and is still expanding. To date, quantified assessment of important epidemiological parameters useful for risk assessment and management, such as transmission rates, symptomless periods, and time to death in field populations, has been lacking. This is due to the emergent and novel nature of the outbreak and length of time needed to monitor the course of disease progression. To address this, we developed a Bayesian method to infer epidemiological parameters by fitting and comparing compartmental epidemiological models to short snapshots of disease progression observed in multiple field plots. We estimated that each infected tree with symptoms is able to infect around 19 trees per year (95% credible range 14–26). The symptomless stage was estimated to have low to negligible infectivity and to last an average of approximately 1.2 years (95% credible range 1.0–1.3 years). Tree desiccation was estimated to occur approximately 4.3 years (95% credible range 4.0–4.6 years) after symptom appearance. However, we were unable to estimate the infectiousness of desiccated trees from the data. Our method could be used to make early estimates of epidemiological parameters in other emerging disease outbreaks where symptom expression is slow. 相似文献

A large-scale serological characterisation of Plum pox virus (PPV) isolates was carried out with 19 monoclonal antibodies (MAbs), including the universal MAb5B and the following strain-specific MAbs: AL (specific to PPV-M), 4DG5 (specific to PPV-D), TUV and AC (specific to PPV-C), and EA24 (specific to PPV-EA). The study involved 108 PPV isolates of different geographical origin (Albania, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Egypt, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Hungary, Moldova, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Turkey and Yugoslavia) and hosts (almond, apricot, peach, plum and cherry). The inter- and intra-strain serological relationships of PPV isolates were evaluated by DASI-ELISA. High serological variability was detected, not only between strains, but also among isolates of the same strain. Computer-assisted analysis of serological data support the hypothesis of the existence of two distinct subclusters, denoted PPV-M1 and PPV-M2, which seem to prevail in Mediterranean and Eastern–Central European countries, respectively. 相似文献

The effect of four solarizing plastic materials on weed suppression and yield response of two lettuce cultivars (‘Bacio’ and
‘Moringa’) grown during two consecutive seasons was investigated at Metaponto (40°23′N; 16°47′E; 10 m a.s.l.), southern Italy.
All solarization treatments suppressed winter and summer weeds with no significant difference among the plastic materials,
although biodegradable film was less efficient in controlling common purslane and common amaranth. Weed infestation at the
harvest of both lettuce cultivars was not affected by the solarizing material, whereas fewer weeds were found in the plots
grown with ‘Bacio’ than with ‘Moringa’. Lettuce yield in two successive growing seasons was always significantly higher in
solarized plots than in nontreated control, without any statistical difference among the plastic materials. Yield and head
quality of cv. ‘Bacio’ were higher than ‘Moringa’ in the first growing season, but the opposite occurred in the second crop.
Soil solarization was confirmed to be effective for weed management in field lettuce crops in the Mediterranean areas, although
weed suppression may be affected also by the lettuce cultivar. Choice of solarizing materials, when similarly effective on
weeds and crop yield, should take into account also their cost. Low density polyethylene plastics emerged as the best choice
in conventional lettuce crops as highly effective as, and less expensive than the other materials, whereas the use of biodegradable
films should be limited to organic lettuce systems. 相似文献
