OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the use of arthroscopy as the primary method for removal of large patellar fracture fragments. DESIGN: Retrospective study. ANIMALS: 5 performance horses of various breeds with patellar fractures. PROCEDURE: Clinical signs of lameness, external evidence of injury, and radiography were used to diagnose and determine fracture orientation. Arthroscopy of the stifle joint was performed on the affected limb with the horse positioned in dorsal recumbency and under general anesthesia. Progress after surgery was determined by evaluating medical records and via telephone conversations with owners. RESULTS: 4 of 5 horses had fractures of the medial aspect of the patella and 1 horse had a fracture of the lateral aspect of the patella. There were no postoperative complications with the joint or the arthroscopic portal incisions. Recovery periods ranged from 3 to 5 months. All horses recovered completely from surgery, and performed at the same or higher level of competition as before arthroscopy. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Femoropatellar joint arthroscopy is a favorable means by which evaluation of the stifle joint and removal of large fracture fragments can be achieved with negligible postoperative complications.  相似文献

The rabies epidemic that reached Switzerland in 1967 developed in response to landscape factors as long as no efficient control strategies were available. The landscape acted either as barrier to the spread of rabies, or it influenced the density of red foxes and thus the habitat of the epidemic. Following the first cases in the canton of Schaffhausen, the whole northwestern Switzerland was infected followed by the eastern Alps, large parts of the Plateau and the Jura mountains. In 1978, in the canton of Valais, the first campaigns of oral immunization of foxes against rabies started. The design of vaccination campaigns during the next two decades was always closely linked to landscape features. Thus, it was possible to free first the Alps and then the Plateau from rabies and finally, at the end of the 1990s, to eliminate it completely within the country. We describe the entire development of the epidemic within the period of 30 years from the first infection up to the last registered case and the final vaccination campaign.  相似文献

Porcine preadipocyte proliferation and differentiation: a role for leptin?   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The present study was designed to determine whether porcine leptin can alter the proliferation and differentiation of the porcine preadipocyte. The stromal vascular cell fraction of neonatal pig s.c. adipose tissue was isolated by collagenase digestion, filtration, and subsequent centrifugation. For differentiation studies, cells were seeded on six-well tissue culture plates and proliferated to confluency in 10% (vol/vol) fetal bovine serum (FBS) in Dulbecco's modified Eagle medium/F12 (DMEM/F12; 50:50). Cultures were differentiated using 2.5% pig serum (vol/vol) and recombinant porcine leptin at concentrations of 0 to 1,000 ng/mL alone or in combination with porcine insulin (100 nM), dexamethasone (1 microM), or IGF-1 (250 ng/mL). After 7 d of lipid filling, cultures were harvested for analysis of sn-glycerol 3 phosphate dehydrogenase (GPDH) and lipoprotein lipase (LPL). The GPDH and LPL activities are measures of preadipocyte differentiation. Data were corrected for protein content of the cultures. For proliferation experiments, 24 h after seeding cells with 10% FBS in DMEM/F12 in 25-cm2 tissue culture flasks, cells were switched to 5% FBS and supplemented with 0 to 1,000 ng of porcine leptin or 1,000 ng of murine leptin. Cell proliferation was measured by 3H-thymidine incorporation in preconfluent cultures over 24 h on d 4 of culture. At confluency, cells were switched to a medium to promote differentiation and lipid filling (2.5% pig serum, 100 nM insulin, 1 microM dexamethasone) for 7 d. Cells were harvested from the flasks and adipocytes were separated from stromal cells by Percoll gradient centrifugation. In a series of experiments, leptin alone or in combination with insulin, dexamethasone, or IGF-I did not affect differentiation as measured by the activity of GPDH and LPL. Leptin at any concentration did not inhibit differentiation induced by insulin, dexamethasone, or IGF-I; however, leptin at 1,000 ng/mL stimulated a 30% increase in preadipocyte proliferation (P = 0.007; n = 6) and a 27% increase in stromal cell proliferation (P < 0.001; n = 6). These results indicate that, at most, porcine leptin may contribute to the recruitment of new adipocytes within the adipose tissue.  相似文献

The aim of this trial was to evaluate the effects of polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) supplementation in different-stages atopic dogs fed on a controlled diet. Twenty-two non-seasonal atopic dogs of different breeds and ages were included in the 2-month trial. All the patients were given an essential fatty acid (EFA) supplementation [17 mg/kg eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) + 5 mg/kg docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) + 35 mg/kg gammalinolenic acid (GLA)], the global (diet + supplementation) omega-6 to omega-3 ratio was 5.5-1. Two groups of dogs were considered: group A 'pre-immunotherapy' (15 cases) included dogs with early stages atopy, which had not been submitted to any treatment yet; group B 'post-immunotherapy' (seven cases) included dogs with chronic atopy immunotherapy non-responsive. Clinical evaluations were performed at the beginning, on day 30 and at the end of the trial. Blood serum fatty acids profile was determined at the beginning and at the end of the study. Better clinical results were obtained in group A, a great difference was found between the two groups on pruritus score. Serum arachidonic acid (AA) was significantly lower at the end of the trial in group A while GLA was significantly higher in group B. We hypothesized that different-stages atopic dogs could have different response to EFA supplementation, maybe because of a different fatty acids metabolism. Early stages cases seem to be more responsive to EFA supplementation.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To identify the normal gastric acid secretion profile in dogs and determine the degree of gastric acid suppression associated with 4 gastric acid suppressants. ANIMALS: 12 healthy Beagles. PROCEDURE: Intragastric pH was measured continuously for 24-hour periods with a digital recording system placed via a gastrostomy tube. Baseline measurements were obtained when food was withheld and when dogs were fed a standard diet. Dogs were then treated with ranitidine (2 mg/kg, IV, q 12 h), famotidine (0.5 mg/kg, IV, q 12 h), pantoprazole (1 mg/kg, IV, q 24 h), omeprazole (1 mg/kg, PO, q 24 h), or saline solution for 7 days; intragastric pH was recorded on days 0, 2, and 6. Subsequently, the effects of administering famotidine (0.5 mg/kg, IV, q 8 h; 6 dogs) and omeprazole as a suspension (1 mg/kg, PO, q 12 h; 6 dogs) were evaluated. Median 24-hour intragastric pH, percentage of time pH was > or = 3, and percentage of time pH was > or = 4 were determined. RESULTS: Median pH, percentage of time pH was > or = 3, and percentage of time pH was > or = 4 were all significantly higher when food was withheld than when dogs were fed. Famotidine, pantoprazole, and omeprazole significantly suppressed gastric acid secretion, compared with saline solution, as determined on the basis of median 24-hour pH and percentages of time pH was > or = 3 or > or = 4. However, ranitidine did not. Omeprazole suspension suppressed gastric acid secretion. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results suggest that in healthy dogs, famotidine, pantoprazole, and omeprazole significantly suppress gastric acid secretion. Twice daily administration of a suspension of omeprazole, was the only regimen tested that approached the potential therapeutic efficacy for acid-related disease when assessed by criteria used for human patients.  相似文献

Total joint replacement has evolved over the past 50 years from a concept that was first attempted in people suffering from osteoarthritis to a commonly applied practice in veterinary medicine. Although many questions have been answered, several controversies still exist, with many implant and technical options being explored. Currently, total hip and elbow replacement are commercially available options viable for use in dogs. The objective of this paper is to present a preliminary assessment of variation in the economic impact of bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV) at dairy farm level between a sample of nations within the EU and hence assess differences in pressure to respond to this disease that may be impeding progress in control and hence restricting collective benefits from healthier livestock. We used a questionnaire to obtain national average values of key epidemiological and economic parameters for a typical dairy farm from BVDV experts in the countries concerned. These parameters were converted into assessments of economic impact using a computer simulation model. Uncontrolled output losses for a BVDV-na?ve herd with virus introduced in year 1 of a 10-year epidemic represented 22, 7, 8, 5, 8 and 20% of the BVDV-free annuity for the UK, Northern Portugal, Holland, Norway, Italy and Germany, respectively. Differences between countries will be widened by differences in the risk of acquiring BVDV. These will be much reduced in countries, such as Norway that have a national BVDV eradication programme. Farmers in such countries can therefore justify spending much less on maintaining BVDV-free status than BVDV-free farms in other countries. This result illustrates the paradox that in countries where BVDV prevalence is high, farmers have least to gain from unilateral BVDV eradication because of the high cost of maintaining freedom from the disease. We discuss this issue in the light of increasing recognition at international level of the importance of BVDV control.  相似文献

The arterial supply to the retina and lens of 10 fetal, 10 neonatal and four adult Zavot-bred cattle of both sexes was studied macroscopically and by stereoscopic microscopy by means of vascular perfusion with latex, giving special emphasis on the hyaloid artery. The central retinal artery ramified in four major retinal arterioles, which formed a compact network throughout the retina (holangiotic or euangiotic pattern). The hyaloid artery was patent in all fetal stages and extended through the vitreous cavity of the eye to the caudal surface of the capsule of the lens. Atrophy of the hyaloid artery began immediately after birth and was completed on day 17 after parturition. No remnant of the hyaloid artery in the vitreous cavity was observed in the adult cattle examined at stereoscopic microscopic level.  相似文献
