Crops grown in seleniferous soil may accumulate selenium (Se) to levels considered highly toxic for animal and human consumption. Furthermore, higher Se content in plant tissues leads to considerable deterioration in product quality. Application of organic amendments plays an important role in improving soil physical, chemical, and biological conditions and influencing nutrient availability. A field trial was conducted to evaluate the effect of organic amendments, namely poultry manure (PM), sugar cane press mud (SCPM), and farmyard manure (FYM), on Se uptake and grain quality of wheat and oilseed rape grown on a seleniferous soil in Punjab, India. Selenium accumulation by wheat and oilseed rape grains decreased significantly (75%–95%) with the application of PM and SCPM, while FYM application resulted in a significant decrease (23%) only in case of wheat grains. The amount of Se associated with seed proteins varied in proportion to its uptake under different treatments. Quality of wheat grains improved considerably with respect to total soluble sugars, reducing sugars, starch, lipids, and sulfur concentrations only after application of SCPM and PM. Treating a Se‐contaminated soil with organic amendments significantly increased the oil concentration and changed the proportion of various fatty acids in rape grains. It is concluded that applying organic amendments to Se‐contaminated soils can alleviate the deleterious effects of Se and restore the nutritional quality of grains.  相似文献

We present here the first comprehensive genetic characterization of melon landraces from the humid tropics of southern India. The genetic diversity among 50 melon landraces collected from 3 agro-ecological regions of southern India (6 agro-ecological sub-regions) was assessed by variation at 17 SSR loci, morphological traits of plant habit and fruit, 2 yield-associated traits, pest and disease resistance, biochemical composition (ascorbic acid, carotenoids, titrable acidity) and mineral content (P, K, Fe, Zn). Differences among accessions were observed in plant and fruit traits. Melon germplasm with high titrable acidity, higher than average amounts of mineral content and resistance to Cucumber mosaic virus, Zucchini yellow mosaic virus, powdery mildew (races 1, 2, 3, 5), Fusarium wilt (races 1, 2), Aphis gossypii and leafminer was recorded in the collection. A high level of genetic variability in melon germplasm was suggested by the SSR analysis. Comparative analysis using SSRs of the genetic variability between Indian melons from north, south, and east regions and reference accessions of melon from Spain, France, Japan, Korea, Iraq, Zambia showed regional differentiation between Indian melon accessions and that Indian germplasm was weakly related to the melon accessions from other parts of the world, suggesting that an important portion of the genetic variability found within this melon collection has not been used yet for the development of new cultivars. Additional collections of acidulus melon germplasm should be made in southern India and adequate management of this important genetic resource is clearly a necessity.  相似文献

Ten strains of adenovirus representing 10 serotypes were administered intratracheally to 3-week-old specific-pathogen-free chickens, which also received 2.5 X 10(5) colony-forming units of a pathogenic Escherichia coli intranasally. Those birds had been inoculated by eye drop at 1 day of age with a virulent infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV). Controls consisted of groups of chickens inoculated with: (a) IBDV and E. coli, (b) IBDV only, (c) E. coli only, and (d) no virus or E. coli. Gross pulmonary alterations at 5 days postinoculation (PI) included congestion and consolidation of one or both lungs of a chick inoculated with adenovirus serotype Ind-C and another inoculated with A-2. Histopathologic alterations in the lungs were those of multifocal interstitial and occasionally diffuse pneumonia. All 10 adenovirus serotypes elicited multifocal or diffuse pneumonia and bronchiolitis in one or more of the five birds per group necropsied at 5 days PI. T-8 and A-2 serotypes induced marked to serve diffuse pneumonia within 5 days; Ind-C, Stein, Tipton, 75-1A, B-3, and X-11 incited a mild diffuse pneumonia. In all groups, the pneumonic lesions were more severe 5 days PI than 12 days PI. Tracheitis was incited by Ind-C, Stein, T-8, and A-2 at 5 days PI; the lesions were minimal to marked in severity. None of the four control groups exhibited gross or histopathologic alterations except the two IBDV-infected groups, which exhibited bursal change.  相似文献

The 2512 infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) strain maintained in the authors' laboratory was compared with apparent 2512 IBDV isolates designated I-2512, P-2512, and H-2512. The latter three viruses were obtained from different sources and, ostensibly, had their origin in the Purdue laboratory. Their effects on immunogenicity, transmissibility, pathogenicity, and cell cultures varied. One of these isolates was said to be only 2 embryo passages higher than the original seed virus in our laboratory. Included in the study, also for comparison, was a cell-cultured-adapted 2512-cloned attenuated virus. The findings emphasize changes that may occur in the identity of a virus from manipulation, mutation, storage, errors in labeling, or other factors. These characteristics should be identified if the virus is to be used as a vaccine, in research, or for other purposes. The need for well-characterized reference strains in repositories is discussed relative to their importance in potential vaccine research and development.  相似文献

Raised beds are widely used in agriculture in developed countries and have proven to be an excellent option for wheat. Permanent raised beds may also offer benefits for rice–wheat (RW) systems in South Asia, in terms of both production and the possibility that furrow-irrigation may be more efficient than flood irrigation. The performance of a RW system on permanent raised beds (37 cm wide, 15 cm high, furrow width 30 cm) was compared with conventional cultivation on the flat on sandy loam and loam soils in replicated experiments in central Punjab, India. The experiments commenced with wheat sown in November 2002, and were continued for 8 crops.  相似文献

Ergot caused by Claviceps purpurea results in the contamination of rye grain by sclerotia that contain alkaloids toxic to humans and other mammals. Ergot incidence and severity are affected by various factors including the availability of pollen during flowering. To test the presence of variation for ergot resistance due to anatomical and/or biochemical factors in rye, we studied cytoplasmic-male sterile (CMS) inbred lines of the Petkus gene pool (two sets each having 30 lines) and their testcrosses with maintainer tester lines (Set I crossed with two and Set II with a third tester line). Sixty-four CMS lines (60 lines, three testers in CMS form, one standard CMS line) and 90 CMS testcrosses were evaluated in four and three environments, respectively, for ergot severity measured as sclerotia weight per ear under pollen isolation and artificial spray inoculation. We also analysed the concentration of the six most important alkaloids and their isomeres in 25 lines. A very high ergot severity was achieved, and despite that genotypic variance among the 64 CMS lines was significant (P < 0.01). In testcrosses, genotypic variance was smaller, even being not significant in testcrosses of one tester. Genotype × environment interaction variances and correlation coefficients between lines and their testcrosses were significant (r = 0.56–0.75, P < 0.01) in all instances. Most prevalent alkaloids were ergosin, ergocristin, and ergotamin. There were no significant genotypic differences among lines for any alkaloid or isomer, but total alkaloid concentration showed genotypic variation with low significance level (P < 0.1). In conclusion, we detected genotypic differences for resistance in CMS rye based on variable response of ovaries during infection process that can be exploited by multi-locational evaluation and selection to develop ergot resistant hybrids.  相似文献

The growth of five strains of infectious bursal disease virus--three strains of serotype I (SAL, D-78, 2512), one of serotype II (OH), and one variant strain (Variant-A)--were compared in Vero and chicken embryo fibroblast (CEF) cell cultures in order to characterize the replication of different strains of IBDV in Vero cells. For all five virus strains, the latent period in Vero cells ranged from 12 to 18 hr, which was longer than the 4-to-6-hr latent period observed in CEF cultures for strains SAL, D-78, and OH. Virus strains SAL, D-78, and OH, which were examined in both Vero and CEF cultures, also had a more extensive maturation phase and higher yields of virus in Vero than in CEF cultures. Total titers of these viruses of 5.35 to 6.10 log10 TCID50/ml in CEFs occurred 24 to 30 hr postinoculation (PI), although the cytopathic effect (CPE) was not seen until 72 hr PI. By comparison, their total infectious virus titers of 6.85 to 8.35 log10 TCID50/ml in Vero cells occurred from 48 hr PI, coinciding with the appearance of CPE. The growth curve of Variant-A in Vero cells differed from the other viruses by showing steadily rising extracellular and cell-associated virus titers throughout the 72-hr observation period. Only very low titers of Variant-A were obtained in CEF cultures, and thus no growth curve in CEFs was performed.  相似文献
