Association of a Pasteurella haemolytica-like organism with enteritis in swine.

A Pasteurella haemolytica-like organism was isolated from the intestines of 28 swine with clinical, gross, or microscopic evidence of enteritis. In 15 cases, other known enteric pathogens were also demonstrated, and in 13 cases, no other pathogens were detected. The mean age of affected animals was 44 days. Most of the animals had clinical evidence of diarrhea. Gross enteric lesions were present in 17 of 21 cases. Microscopic lesions were present in 24 of 26 cases. A diffuse or segmental moderate to severe necrotizing enteritis was the most common lesion in cases in which only the Pasteurella haemolytica-like organism was isolated. Biochemical tests gave results consistent with Pasteurella haemolytica, and 5 of 15 isolates met criteria for biotype A. Negative results were found with an indirect haemagglutination procedure for P. haemolytica.     

Sedative effect of detomidine in infant calves.

Detomidine administered intramuscularly at a dose of 10, 20 or 40 micrograms/kg body mass was evaluated for its sedative effects in 15 unfasted infant calves (age: 15-20 days; body mass: 18-33 kg). The drug produced dose-dependent sedation. At a dose of 10 micrograms/kg detomidine produced effective sedation for 30 to 45 min without any observable analgesia. At doses of 20 or 40 micrograms/kg it caused deep sedation, sternal recumbency, and moderate analgesia of the trunk. Hyperglycaemia was recorded at all dose levels. The changes in respiratory rate, rectal temperature, haemoglobin, packed cell volume, total erythrocyte count and plasma concentration of total protein were not significant.     

Influence of growth regulators on setting,retention and weight of fruits in two cultivars of litchi

Investigations were undertaken to explore the possibility of improving setting, retention and weight of fruits in ‘Early Seedless’ and ‘Calcuttia’ cultivars of lichi (Litchi chinensis) by means of growth regulators. Indole acetic acid (IAA) at 20, 40 and 80 mg l^?1, 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid (2,4-D) at 2,4 and 8 mg l^?1 and gibberellic acid (GA₃) at 50, 100 and 150 mg l^?1 were sprayed on panicles in the first fortnight of April, when 50–100% flowers had opened. All 3 growth regulators caused a favourable effect on fruit setting, fruit retention and weight of individual fruits, but IAA at 20 mg l^?1 proved the best for enhancing setting, GA₃ at 50 mg l^?1 for increasing retention and GA₃ at 100 mg l^?1 for improving fruit weight. IAA and GA₃ should, therefore, be used in combination. Between the 2 cultivars tested, ‘Calcuttia’ proved superior to ‘Early Seedless’ in fruit setting, fruit retention and weight of individual fruits.     

Bovine diaphragmatic hernioplasty using autologous skin grafts.

A 2nd recurrence of diaphragmatic hernia in a buffalo (Bubalus bubalis), which twice previously had been subjected to herniorrhaphy, was successfully treated by hernioplasty, using a fresh autologous skin graft to compensate for the lost tissue.
