Development and delivery of evidence-based messages to reduce the risk of zoonoses in Nairobi, Kenya

This paper describes a trans-disciplinary process of co-generating and disseminating evidence-based messages for reducing the risk from cryptosporidiosis and other zoonoses in an urban community in Nairobi. Research findings about disease prevalence, risk factors and observed risky and risk-mitigating practices were analysed by a team comprising researchers, community members and local policy- and decision-makers. Using participatory planning, multiple strategies were developed for disseminating key information. We identified five vulnerable groups at higher risk of exposure to cryptosporidiosis and other cattle zoonoses with similar transmission pathways (women, children, elderly people, immunosuppressed people and male farm workers). For each group, targeted messages were developed. Good practices already in use, as were also practices as practices to improve environmental conditions. These messages were disseminated through printed material, in a workshop, through community campaigners and also an edutainment soap opera episode broadcast on Kenyan television. In conclusion, a participatory and trans-disciplinary process can help transform the findings of research into messages that are targeted, attractive and understandable. 相似文献

Background
Alphabaculoviruses are Lepidoptera-specific virulent pathogens that infect numerous pests, including the Spodoptera complex. Due to their low environmental persistence, the traditional use of Alphabaculoviruses as bioinsecticides consist in high-rate spray applications with repeated treatments. Several abiotic and biotic factors can foster its dispersion, promoting their persistence in the agroecosystem. Amongst biotic factors, predatory arthropods can disperse the viruses by excretion after preying on infected individuals. Therefore, this study focused on promoting predator's ingestion of nucleopolyhedrovirus (NPV)-treated diets, and the later exposition of the insect host to leaf surfaces contaminated with predator excreta. The virus–host–predator system studied was Spodoptera littoralis nucleopolyhedrovirus (SpliNPV), Spodoptera littoralis (Boisduval) and Nesidiocoris tenuis (Reuter). The infective potential of N. tenuis feces and the retention time of SpliNPV were assessed under laboratory conditions after feeding on treated diets (sucrose solution and Ephestia kuehniella eggs).Results
Mortality of S. littoralis larvae was lower via N. tenuis excretion than in positive control (spray application) in the first infection cycle, together with a delay in host death. In the second infection cycle, both SpliNPV-treated diets triggered 100% mortality. Both diets allowed the transmission of SpliNPV, with a faster excretion via sucrose solution compared to E. kuehniella eggs. SpliNPV remained in N. tenuis digestive tract and was viable after excretion at least for 9 days for both diets.Conclusions
This study demonstrated the potential of the predator N. tenuis as inoculative agent of baculoviruses, representing a new alternative that, along with inundative applications, might contribute to improve pest management strategies. © 2023 The Authors. OBJECTIVE: To compare the effect of 2 concentrations of oxygen in inspired gas (fraction of inspired oxygen [FIO(2)] 1.0 or 0.4) on pulmonary aeration and gas exchange in dogs during inhalation anesthesia. ANIMALS: 20 healthy dogs. PROCEDURES: Following administration of acepromazine and morphine, anesthesia was induced in each dog with thiopental and maintained with isoflurane in 100% oxygen (100% group; n = 10) or a mixture of 40% oxygen and air (40% group; 10). Dogs were placed in dorsal recumbency and were mechanically ventilated. After surgery, spiral computed tomography (CT) of the thorax was performed and PaO(2), PaCO(2), and the alveolar-arterial oxygen tension difference (P([A-a])O(2)) were assessed. The lung CT images were analyzed, and the extent of hyperinflated (-1,000 to -901 Hounsfield units [HUs]), normally aerated (-900 to -501 HUs), poorly aerated (-500 to -101 HUs), or nonaerated (-100 to +100 HUs) areas was determined. RESULTS: Compared with the 100% oxygen group, the normally aerated lung area was significantly greater and the poorly aerated and nonaerated areas were significantly smaller in the 40% oxygen group. The time to CT (duration of surgery) was similar in both groups. Although PaCO(2) was similar in both groups, PaO(2) and P((A-a))O(2) were significantly higher in the 100% oxygen group. In both groups, pulmonary atelectasis developed preferentially in caudal lung fields. CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: In isoflurane-anesthetized dogs, mechanical ventilation with 40% oxygen appeared to maintain significantly better lung aeration and gas exchange than ventilation with 100% oxygen. 相似文献

The Agroforestry Tree Seeds Association of Lantapan (ATSAL) in Bukidnon province of Mindanao, Philippines, was organized in 1998, facilitated by the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF). Farmers were trained on germplasm collection, processing and marketing of agroforestry tree seeds and seedlings. ATSAL has been marketing various tree seeds and seedlings with apparent success, and has provided training on seed collection and nursery management to farmers, government technicians, and workers from non-government organizations. This paper reports initial results of a continuing study to assess the effectiveness of ATSAL’s marketing strategy, including group dynamics, and the issues and challenges the group faces. It was found that during the first 2 years, ATSAL’s market share of highly demanded timber tree species grew rapidly, thus helping to disseminate widely these important species among farmers. ICRAF’s technical back-up was an advantage, increasing the Association’s market credibility. Subsequently, ATSAL extended its market to the central Philippines, but failed to meet the demand for seeds due to organizational limitations. Market competition exists, where a non-member was able to take a larger market share than was the group. Nonetheless, ATSAL has established its name as a viable community-based seed and seedling producer, maintaining a stronghold in local and regional markets. Collective action is important for smallholders to gain market access, but is unlikely to sustain sales. Facilitating smallholder collective action is essentially an arduous task, requiring the supporting agency to hold a firm grasp of market realities, to invest in the maintenance of collective action, to provide continuous technical back-up, and to ascertain the conditions that make collective action succeed. 相似文献

The mid‐shelf front (MSF) of the Buenos Aires province continental shelf in the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean plays a central role in the pelagic ecosystem of the region acting as the main spring reproductive area for the northern population of the Argentine anchovy Engraulis anchoita and supporting high concentrations of chlorophyll as well as zooplankton, the main food of anchovy. To investigate the influence of environmental variability on the reproductive success of E. anchoita, we analyzed a 13‐yr time series (1997–2009) of environmental data at MSF including chlorophyll dynamics, as well as zooplankton composition and abundance, ichthyoplankton distributions, and recruitment of E. anchoita. Spring chlorophyll concentrations showed high interannual variability and were mainly influenced by changes in water temperature and vertical stratification, which in turn control nutrient supply to the surface. Chlorophyll dynamics (magnitude, timing, and duration of the spring bloom) explained most of the variability observed in E. anchoita recruitment, most likely via fluctuations in the availability of adequate food for the larvae. Our results suggest that satellite ocean color products can be valuable tools for understanding variability in ecosystem dynamics and its effects on the recruitment of fish. 相似文献

Researchers have studied the cationization of polysaccharides to replace conventional cationic polyelectrolytes, linked to environmental issues. However, cationic celluloses have not achieved the success of cationic starches. The knowledge of the cellulose cationization proccess needs to be improved. In this work, we pretreat (alkalize) and cationize cotton linters and α-cellulose powder, using 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyltrimethylammonium chloride (CHPTAC) in an aqueous-alcoholic alkaline solution. The pretreatment took place under different conditions, whereas the cationization itself was always performed at 70 ºC, for a CHPTAC/AGU (anhydro glucose units) mole ratio of 4, and for a total time of 5 h for cotton linters or 100 min for α-cellulose powder. The degree of substitution, the crystallinity index and the temporal evolution of intrinsic viscosity are provided for the 18 experiments performed. The background was uncertain about the effect of cationization on intrinsic viscosity. Here, we report increasing viscosity with increasing degree of substitution and cationization time. Furthermore, intrinsic viscosity increased with increasing cationization time, even when the degree of substitution had leveled off. Seemingly, the incorporation of positive charges into cellulose changed the polymer distribution and the interactions between the polymer and the solvent. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the hypocholesterolemic activity of Cnidoscolus chayamansa. In an in vivo model, high-cholesterol diet administered to mice Balb/c induced hypercholesterolemia. Three extracts from Cnidoscolus chayamansa (ethanol, methanol and an aqueous extract) were tested on hypercholesterolemic mice. Active extracts were assessed against
the in vitro inhibitory activity of the same three extracts on the HMG-CoA reductase enzyme by using Vero cells. The specific chemical
groups present in the phytochemical extracts were also determined. Only the aqueous extract (at either doses employed) showed
a significant cholesterol reduction (27.9 and 31.1%, for 50 and 100 mg kg−1, respectively P < 0.01). The extract did not inhibit the HMG-CoA reductase enzyme, suggesting that its compounds act at another level in
cholesterol metabolism. Reactions to secondary metabolites indicate the presence of alkaloids in the aqueous and ethanol extracts

The reproduction of Holothuria floridana in Campeche bay, southern Gulf of Mexico, was investigated over a period of 12 months by macroscopic and histological examination of the gonad and gametogenesis. A total of 1938 specimens were collected. Their body gutted weight and body gutted length ranged from 15 to 225 g and 5 to 21 cm, respectively. Percentage of the gonad weight to the gutted body weight (gonad index, GI) increased steadily from December to April, rapidly declined in May, and remained low during the following months. GI displayed a negative correlation with temperature of the habitat and no correlation with salinity. The gonad maturity scale with five stages was developed from macroscopic and microscopic observations; I, recovery; II, growing; III, early mature; IV, mature and V, spent. Stages III to V were observed all around the year, suggesting that this species displays continuous reproduction with two peaks of spawning events; from March to April and in September. The presence of viscera regurgitated individuals caused high variability in GI. The sex-ratio varied from 1:1 (December 2013 to June 2014), to 1.37:1 (November 2013); we suggest that this may be the consequence of unintentional selective fishing. The body length and body weight at the first maturity were calculated to be 13.4 cm and 87.0 g, respectively. For resource management it will be necessary to address some reference points like harvest season and avoidance of catches shorter than length at first maturity. 相似文献
