1. Thirty adult female pigeons (Columba livia domestica) were randomly divided into 3 equal groups; the 1st and 2nd groups were immunised with bovine serum albumin (BSA) at 0 and 20 d, the 2nd group also received 1 g L-carnitine per litre of drinking water from -5 to 25 d post-immunisation (dpi) and the 3rd group, a control group, received neither treatment. 2. Body weights and serum samples were taken at 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 dpi. 3. Both BSA-specific IgG and IgM responses were enhanced by about 10% by L-carnitine supplementation. 4. L-carnitine supplemented pigeons showed a higher water consumption. Body weight loss during the onset of the immune response showed a slight tendency to be counteracted by L-carnitine supplementation. 5. Mechanisms associated with bendiocarb resistance were examined in two strains of western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande), that differed in their susceptibility to this carbamate by 13.6-fold. No appreciable differences between the two strains in [14C] bendiocarb penetration and excretion were detected; however, bendiocarb was metabolised substantially faster by the resistant KCM thrips than by the more susceptible UMC thrips. No appreciable difference between the two strains was found in the sensitivity of acetylcholinesterase activity to inhibition by bendiocarb. It was concluded that bendiocarb resistance in KCM western flower thrips was due to enhanced metabolism that probably was mainly oxidative in nature. 相似文献

A total of 94 vaginal swab samples and 195 serum samples collected from aborted ewes in 15 flocks were examined by pcr and a complement fixation test, respectively. In addition, 172 samples of stomach contents from fetuses from different flocks submitted for the diagnosis of abortion during the four lambing periods between 2000 and 2004 were tested by pcr. Chlamydial dna was detected in seven vaginal swabs obtained from five of the 15 flocks and in six samples of fetal stomach contents. The efficacy of a single intraperitoneal injection of oxolinic acid to control an outbreak of atypical Aeromonas salmonicida infection in goldsinny wrasse (Ctenolabrus rupestris) and in the treatment of systemic vibriosis in corkwing wrasse (Symphodus melops) was examined. In addition a field study was performed to examine the effect of medication on the survival rate of goldsinny wrasse in Atlantic salmon cages. Four groups of wild caught goldsinny wrasse, each of 50 fish, were treated with an intraperitoneal injection of propylene glycol:saline (50:50) (control) or 50 mg/kg oxolinic acid at a concentration of 50 mg/mL. Three days after medication the fish in all groups were treated by an intraperitoneal injection of prednisolone acetate and an increase in seawater temperature from 9.0 to 11.5 degrees C. Cumulative mortalities were 18% in the two groups treated with oxolinic acid and 94 and 100% in the unmedicated control groups, giving a 'relative percentage survival' (RPS) value of 82%. A laboratory maintained population of originally wild caught corkwing wrasse experiencing high daily mortality was treated with oxolinic acid (50 mg/kg) or propylene glycol:saline (control). Cumulative mortalities were 84% (control) and 42% (oxolinic acid medicated group) giving an RPS value of 50%. In a field investigation using goldsinny wrasse approximately 30% were medicated with oxolinic acid (50 mg/kg) prior to stocking in cages with Atlantic salmon. Proteus spp. are widely recognized as opportunistic pathogens causing urinary tract and septic infections in humans and animals. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance genes and mutations in the quinolone resistance determining region in association with the detection of quinolone susceptibility of 24 strains of pet turtle-borne Proteus spp. Susceptibility of 4 antimicrobials including nalidixic acid, ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, and levofloxacin was examined by disk diffusion and minimum inhibitory concentration test. Six isolates were resistant to nalidixic acid showing either intermediate resistance or resistance to other quinolones. All nalidixic acid, resistant isolates harbored mutations in gyrB (N440T/A401G/Q411S). Two of the isolates had both gyrA (S83I) and parC (S80I) mutations. Twenty-one isolates were positive for the presence of plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance genes; the qnrD gene had the highest prevalence with 19 (79.2%), while qnrS, qnrA, qnrB, and aac(6′), Ib-cr genes were present in 9 (37.5%), 2 (8.3%), 1 (4.2%), and 11 (45.8%) isolates, respectively. These results suggest that pet turtle-associated Proteus spp. should be considered a potential source of antimicrobial resistance determinants. 相似文献
