SUMMARY: An outbreak of liver disease which killed more than 30 dogs at Alice Springs was associated with feeding meat from horses, some of which had developed Indigofera linnaei poisoning (Birdsville horse disease). Affected livers were small, nodular and yellow. There was associated jaundice, ascites, elevation of alanine aminotransferase levels in serum, a tendency to bleed, and signs of hepatic encephalopathy. Histologically, livers showed periacinar necrosis, collapse and haemorrhage, with severe swelling, vacuolation and cholestasis in remaining hepatocytes. Indospicine, a toxic amino acid found in the genus Indigofera, was detected in samples of suspect horsemeat. Experimental feeding of horsemeat containing 16 mg indospicine/kg for 32 days produced periacinar necrosis and hepatocellular swelling in 2 dogs, although neither died nor showed clinical illness. In another experiment, intakes of as little as 0.13 mg indospicine/kg bodyweightlday for 70 days produced periacinar liver lesions, and indospicine concentrations in serum, muscle and liver rose during this period to 3.9, 7.9 and 17.5 mg/kg, respectively. It was concluded that meat from horses grazing l. linnael can be hepatotoxic for dogs, and that this toxicity may be related to its indospicine content.  相似文献

During the 1960s there was extensive formation of anchor ice to depths of 30 meters at McMurdo Station, Antarctica. During this period the sponge Homaxinella balfourensis was rare, as were its predators in that depth zone. Most of the existing sponges were killed by anchor ice. During the 1970s, anchor ice formation was reduced, and there was a massive recruitment of Homaxinella, which covered as much as 80 percent of the substrata in that zone. Many predators appeared but did not control the sponge population, and it continued to grow through that decade. The early 1980s were characterized by ice formation and almost all of the Homaxinella were eliminated, leaving an order of magnitude more predators in that zone. The interdecadal increases in anchor ice probably result from local upwelling of extremely cold deep water, possibly in response to shifts in the strengths of regional currents.  相似文献

The primary objective was to compare thyroid hormones and levels of carp pituitary extract for the artificial production of female Ictalurus punctatus × male I. furcatus hybrid catfish. The effects of different carp pituitary extract dosage rates (5, 6, 9, and 10 mg/kg), carp pituitary extract (6 and 10 mg/kg) supplemented with the thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), or pregnenolone (DHP) were determined for inducing ovulation of female channel catfish, fertilization of channel catfish eggs with male blue catfish sperm, and hatching rate of these embryos. Hormone treatments thyroxine and tri-iodothyronine with carp pituitary extract, carp pituitary extract alone, and pregnenolone with carp pituitary extract used to artificially produce hybrid catfish were not different in terms of ovulation rates, eggs/kg, fry/kg body weight of female channel catfish, fertilization rates, or hatching rates (P > 0.05). These findings suggest that lower amounts of carp pituitary extract may be used to induce spawn of female channel catfish for production of channel-blue catfish hybrids and the addition of thyroid and steroid hormones is ineffective at the rates used in this study.  相似文献

We have developed a statistically standardized bioassay for quantifying the effect of swine serum on the proliferation rate of cultured L6 myogenic cells. The intra-assay coefficient of variation for this assay is 2.5%. Over 29 experiments, the relationship between the assays response to 2.5% control swine serum and its response to 2.5% serum plus 10(-7) M insulin is linear (r2 = .9). This relationship can be used to adjust experimental data obtained in different experiment to a common control value so that valid inter-assay comparisons can be made. The inter-assay coefficient of variation is reduced four- to five fold by this adjustment procedure. We believe this standardized assay provides a useful system for identifying and isolating unknown growth factors that affect muscle growth rate in an economically important species.  相似文献

The gap between data analysis and site-specific recommendations has been identified as one of the key constraints on widespread adoption of precision agriculture technology. This disparity is in part due to the fact that analytical techniques available to understand crop GIS layers have lagged behind development of data gathering and storage technologies. Yield monitor, sensor and other spatially dense agronomic data is often autocorrelated, and this dependence among neighboring observations violates the assumptions of classical statistical analysis. Consequently, reliability of estimates may be compromised. Spatial regression analysis is one way to more fully exploit the information contained in spatially dense data. Spatial regression techniques can also adjust for bias and inefficiency caused by spatial autocorrelation. The objective of this paper is to compare four spatial regression methods that explicitly incorporate spatial correlation in the economic analysis of variable rate technology: (1) a regression approach adopted from the spatial econometric literature; (2) a polynomial trend regression approach; (3) a classical nearest neighbor analysis; and (4) a geostatistical approach. The data used in the analysis is from a variable rate nitrogen trial in the Córdoba Province, Argentina, 1999. The spatial regression approaches offered stronger statistical evidence of spatial heterogeneity of corn yield response to nitrogen than ordinary least squares. The spatial econometric analysis can be implemented on relatively small data sets that do not have enough observations for estimation of the semivariogram required by geostatistics. The nearest neighbor and polynomial trend analyses can be implemented with ordinary least squares routines that are available in GIS software. The main result of this study is that conclusions drawn from marginal analyses of this variable rate nitrogen trial were similar for each of the spatial regression models, although the assumptions about spatial process in each model are quite different.  相似文献

Dietary administration of 4 ppm of the beta-agonist L-644,969 (Merck Sharpe and Dohme Research Laboratories) to finishing lambs induced a decrease (10 to 14%, P less than .05) in extractable calpain I activity in the longissimus muscle (LD) at death (d 0). At 4 d postmortem (d 4), extractable calpain I levels in the LD of both control and treated lambs were reduced (P less than .001) from those present at d 0, but the extractable activity in the LD was reduced to a greater extent in control than in treated lambs. Calpain II activity was increased 42% (P less than .005) in LD of treated lambs; however, no significant differences were observed between d 0 and d 4 calpain II activity within treated or control LD samples (P greater than .1). Calpastatin activity was higher in the LD of treated lambs (74% on d 0, P less than .001 and 430% on d 4, P less than .001) than in the LD of control lambs. Measurable cathepsin B activity was decreased (29% on d 0, P less than .05) and measurable cathepsin H activity was increased (10% on d 0, P less than .05 and 10% on d 4, P less than .05) in the LD of treated lambs compared with controls. On d 2, 4 and 6 postmortem, degradation in myofibrils isolated from the LD was lower for treated than for control lambs. Warner-Bratzler shear values for loin chops from treated lambs were higher on both d 3 (111%) and 6 (108%) postmortem than for chops from control lambs (P less than .001). L-644,969-induced decreases in muscle proteolytic capacity may limit postmortem myofibril degradation and contribute to the reduced tenderness observed. This decreased proteolytic capacity may contribute to increased muscularity of L-644,969-treated lambs.  相似文献
