Grazing livestock freely select landscape resources, unless they are herded or constrained by fences. Automated animal control (AAC) systems offer an alternative to physical fences by using animal-positioning technology and aversive stimuli to deter animals from staying in sensitive environments and so limit their impact. This paper reports on a replicated field experiment completed to test whether occasional stimuli (audio cue followed by a mild electric stimulus), delivered by discontinuously activated AAC collars, could suffice to modify the grazing behavior of groups of cattle. Four groups of eight steers were confined in 8-ha rectangular paddocks that had an ad libitum supplement feeder located in one end to attract cattle. The steers' positional information was recorded continuously for 3 d using a GPS receiver encased in a collar fitted around their neck. These data were used to characterize their use of the paddocks without intervention. Subsequently a restriction zone was activated on the collars. This zone contained the supplement feeders and represented approximately 10% of the paddock area. Cattle movement was again monitored during a second 3-d period, in which the steers were subjected to discontinuous aversive stimuli (5 min of stimulation followed by a random 0–30 min interval without stimulation) if they were located inside or moved into the restriction zone. Cattle visits to the restriction zone were shorter and the return interval longer when steers were subjected to discontinuous stimulation. Overall, there was a 97% reduction in the use of the restriction zone between the first and second deployments. These results suggest that grazing impact can be drastically reduced by making a zone less desirable through discontinuous aversive stimulation. Such a discontinuous (25% of the time on) AAC system can reduce power consumption in collars and so help overcome energy supply limitations that hinder commercial AAC applications.  相似文献

Infectious bronchitis virus (IBV), the coronavirus of the chicken (Gallus gallus), is one of the foremost causes of economic loss within the poultry industry, affecting the performance of both meat-type and egg-laying birds. The virus replicates not only in the epithelium of upper and lower respiratory tract tissues, but also in many tissues along the alimentary tract and elsewhere e.g. kidney, oviduct and testes. It can be detected in both respiratory and faecal material. There is increasing evidence that IBV can infect species of bird other than the chicken. Interestingly breeds of chicken vary with respect to the severity of infection with IBV, which may be related to the immune response. Probably the major reason for the high profile of IBV is the existence of a very large number of serotypes. Both live and inactivated IB vaccines are used extensively, the latter requiring priming by the former. Their effectiveness is diminished by poor cross-protection. The nature of the protective immune response to IBV is poorly understood. What is known is that the surface spike protein, indeed the amino-terminal S1 half, is sufficient to induce good protective immunity. There is increasing evidence that only a few amino acid differences amongst S proteins are sufficient to have a detrimental impact on cross-protection. Experimental vector IB vaccines and genetically manipulated IBVs--with heterologous spike protein genes--have produced promising results, including in the context of in ovo vaccination.  相似文献

Twenty-three reserves in the Western Australian wheatbelt were examined in an attempt to assess their conservation value for native mammals, excluding bats. Multiple regression analysis on log transformed data showed that 72% of the observed variation in mammal species richness between reserves was accounted for by reserve size. The addition of the other reserve variables examined did not increase significantly this explained variation, although significant correlations existed with most variables. Estimates suggest that a minimum reserve area of about 40,000 ha is required to conserve that part of the regional assemblage of mammals in southern and western Australia likely to persist in the face of moderate disturbances by man and his agencies. Reserves should have large areas of major vegetation formations and maximise the number of regional vegetation associations. Nature reserves as small as 30 ha are valuable sanctuaries for certain species of native mammals.Comparison with mammal faunas isolated on islands by Quaternary glacioeustatic sea-level rise shows that in relation to area, wheatbelt reserves are richer in species, but the slopes of the regressions are similar, particularly for those islands that are little disturbed by man and introduced predators. We suggest that most of the species of mammals surviving in the wheatbelt are suited to existing within patches of vegetation, such as nature reserves, because they are adapted to surviving within the natural archipelago of soil and vegetation types which characterise the wheatbelt and southwestern Western Australia. We suggest that the species of mammals that have become extinct in the wheatbelt are those that are unable to cope with alteration in environmental patchiness caused by changes in the pattern of fires resulting from European occupation.  相似文献

Twenty-three reserves in the Western Australian wheatbelt were examined in detail to evaluate the adequacy of the reserve system in the region for the conservation of lizards. We recorded most of the lizard species known from the region and conclude that the reserve system is at present adequate for their conservation.Lizard species richness in wheatbelt reserves does not appear to be related to isolation from adjacent uncleared land, either in space or time, but is related to the ecology of the reserve. Lizard species richness-area relationships for wheatbelt reserves are very similar to the most comparable late-Pleistocene/Holocene continental island lizard faunas; the slopes of the regression lines are not significantly different and the intercepts are only marginally significant.Multiple regression analysis shows that 75% of the variation observed in lizard species richness between reserves is accounted for by the algorithm of the number of vegetation associations on these reserves; addition of other reserve variables examined (including area) does not significantly increase this explained variation.Reserves as small as 30 ha are valuable as sanctuaries for lizards although it is suggested that 1500 ha is an optimum size. Some vegetation formations are more important for lizards than others; woodlands are most important.  相似文献

Progress over 20 years of sunflower breeding in central Argentina   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
This paper applies linear mixed model analysis to 122 on-farm trials of commercial and near-commercial sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) hybrids grown over 15 years in 32 locations of central Argentina to quantify increases in oil yield and to determine the contributions of change in both biotic stress resistance and yielding ability in favourable environments. The best linear unbiased predictors (BLUPs) from this analysis can be regarded as measures of ‘relative peak performance’ of hybrids in environments for which they were selected, and are a better measure of their adaptation compared to small trial sets of ‘historical’ hybrids. The BLUPs of 49 commercial hybrids released between 1983 and 2005 showed a genetic gain for oil yield of 11.9 kg ha−1 yr−1. Special purpose hybrids that were converted for single traits or that were developed for low-technology markets lagged by 5–15 years in terms of genetic gain. Genetic gains came about due to both an increase in the number of hybrids with resistance to the major biotic stress (Verticillium dahliae Klebahn) and a genetic gain in oil yield of 14.4 kg ha−1 yr−1 within these hybrids. Based on the data and the estimated time lag between commercial release and peak use, the improvement in oil and grain yield of conventional hybrids in central Argentina will be sustained until at least 2010, with evidence that the new germplasm pools still have substantial genetic variance to be exploited.  相似文献

Abstract. A laboratory experiment was designed to assess the impact of surface seal development on the hydrological response of a clay soil. The influence of surface sealing on vertical macropore flow and lateral throughflow was of particular interest. The extent and development of the surface seal in repacked lysimeters was designed to match that recorded over two growing seasons at a clay field site in Essex, and was not extensive enough to reduce significantly the infiltration capacity of the soil. Consequently, the hydrological response of the lysimeters was similar under sealed and unsealed conditions, with a more rapid wetting response under sealed conditions being attributed to the higher soil moisture content required to create the surface seal. Macropore flow was initiated at the A/B soil boundary of the lysimeters, in response to the development of a saturated layer. The rate of macropore and throughflow in the soil was dictated by rainfall intensity at the soil surface as this controlled the depth of water in the perched water table. Simulation of the tensiometer response in the lysimeters demonstrated that it was possible to attribute the rapid movement of water through the A horizon to water displacement processes alone, without recourse to preferential flow processes.  相似文献
