Cultivated (Citrullus lanatus var. lanatus) and citron type (var. citroides) watermelon collected from different areas on the African continent are remarkably diverse in fruit and seed morphology. Chloroplast DNA investigations using PCR-RFLP and sequencing analysis of several non-coding regions were conducted to infer their biogeographic and evolutionary relationships, origin and domestication history. Variability within C. lanatus was observed at regions of high A + T content, resulting in indels and transversions mainly. Distinct chlorotype lineages were identified separating the cultivated and egusi-type watermelon from var. citroides accessions. This suggests an ancient split from a common ancestor and haplotype fixation. Three haplotypes as a result of relatively recent indel events were detected within var. citroides. The geographical range of two of the main citroides haplotypes is relatively similar across southern Africa. Accessions with the most ancient citroides haplotype originated in Swaziland and South Africa resulting in colonization routes from this area all over the world. Chloroplast divergence is not associated with morphological divergence. The cultivated and wild watermelon appear to have diverged independently from a common ancestor, possibly C. ecirrhosus from Namibia.  相似文献

Citrullus colocynthis is a desert plant with a rich history as an important medicinal plant and as a source of valuable oil. Its small seeds appear in several early Egyptian, Lybian and Near Eastern sites from about 4000 BC. Sequence information deduced from several polymorphic intergenic cpDNA regions and a relatively large intron (0.6 kb) at the transit sequence of single-copy nuclear gene G3pdh showed clear geographical structure among C. colocynthis accessions. Region specific haplotypes with different nucleotide substitution rates were observed. The highest number of substitution events occurred in C. colocynthis selections from India and Pakistan, the lowest number in accessions from the Middle Eastern and West Asian region (Iran, Israel, and Afghanistan). Population level variation at the noncoding cpDNA and G3pdh intron are congruent. Indels at two cpDNA regions and unique nuclear and cpDNA substitutions indicate the direction of migration from the African continent into the Middle East and the Far East. C. colocynthis collected in Australia showed the highest sequence homology with accessions from Cyprus and Morocco. Divergent lineages are restricted to portions of the species range. Possible causes of this pattern include restricted migration and gene flow between regions, and differences in population size of divergent haplotypes based on differential patterns of environmental adaptation.  相似文献

California's 14-year, $25 million acidic deposition program has studied the causes and effects of acidic air pollutants. In contrast to the eastern United States where sulfur-derived (S-derived) by-products from coal combustion dominate precipitation chemistry, nitrogen-derived (N-derived) acids predominate in wet and dry deposition in California. Adverse effects on the human lung have not been observed after short-term exposures to acidity, but extended exposures to ambient acidity may pose a chronic risk. No irreversible, adverse effects on surface waters in the Sierra Nevada mountain range or to the state's forests have been found due to extant acidic inputs. The longer-term outlook for forests is less certain because the impacts observed elsewhere occurred after decades of S and N deposition, but at lower ambient ozone levels. Ozone is the major air pollutant stressor for forests, but atmospheric N has the potential to cause adverse changes in soil nutrient cycling. Impacts on man-made materials in southern California (e.g., galvanized steel) were found to be minor. While California does not have an ambient air quality standard for acidic air pollutants, emissions of precursors have declined since the 1960's due to changes in industrial practices, improvements in technology, and adoption of control measures for ozone. Lowering emissions from motor vehicles will be emphasized to prevent future increases in N deposition.  相似文献

Photoacoustic (PA) spectroscopy in the ultraviolet and visible was demonstrated to be a suitable tool for direct determination of total phenolic content in red sorghum flours. The PA spectra obtained feature two characteristic peaks: the first centered at 285 nm is due to the aromatic amino acids, while the second one at 335 nm is associated with the total phenolic content. The outcome of the PA study was compared with the results obtained by a conventional, tedious Folin-Ciocalteau chemical method. Statistical analysis indicates no significant difference between the two methods used in this study.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the physical and hydraulic properties of selected inorganic amendments and their mixtures with sand (85:15% v/v), and model how they affect the water movement in sand-based root zones of sports fields. The amendments are composed of: calcined diatomaceous earth materials (Axis and Isolite); zeolites (Clinolite and Ecolite); and calcined clays (Moltan Plus, Profile, and Pro??s Choice). The bulk density, particle density, porosity, particle-size distribution, saturated hydraulic conductivity, water retention and available water-holding capacity were analyzed. A numerical model was applied to simulate soil water movement for a scenario with and without amendment incorporation. The results showed that amendments significantly (P?<?0.05) improved the physical and hydraulic properties of root zone. Modeling results revealed reduced surface dryness, higher volumetric water content and storage and higher initial root water uptake rate for the root zones with amendments. These results suggest there are multiple benefits of amended root zones in terms of improvement of the physical and hydraulic properties of sand-based root zones.  相似文献

ABSTRACT In the spring of 2000, an aster yellows (AY) epidemic occurred in carrot crops in the Winter Garden region of southwestern Texas. A survey revealed that vegetable crops, including cabbage, onion, parsley, and dill, and some weeds also were infected by AY phytoplasmas. Nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis of PCR-amplified phytoplasma 16S rDNA were employed for the detection and identification of phytoplasmas associated with these crops and weeds. Phytoplasmas belonging to two subgroups, 16SrI-A and 16SrI-B, in the AY group (16SrI), were predominantly detected in infected plants. Carrot, parsley, and dill were infected with both subgroups. Onion and three species of weeds (prickly lettuce, lazy daisy, and false ragweed) were predominantly or exclusively infected by subgroup 16SrI-A phytoplasma strains, while cabbage was infected by subgroup 16SrI-B phytoplasmas. Both types of phytoplasmas were detected in three leafhopper species, Macrosteles fascifrons, Scaphytopius irroratus, and Ceratagallia abrupta, commonly present in this region during the period of the epidemic. Mixed infections were very common in individual carrot, parsley, and dill plants and in individual leafhoppers. Sequence and phylogenetic analyses of 16S rDNA and ribosomal protein (rp) gene sequences indicated that phytoplasma strains within subgroup 16SrI-A or subgroup 16SrI-B, detected in various plant species and putative insect vectors, were highly homogeneous. However, based on rp sequences, two rpI subgroups were identified within the subgroup 16SrI-A strain cluster. The majority of subgroup 16SrI-A phytoplasma strains were classified as rp subgroup rpI-A, but phytoplasma strains detected in one onion sample and two leafhoppers (M. fascifrons and C. abrupta) were different and classified as a new rp subgroup, rpI-N. The degree of genetic homogeneity of the phytoplasmas involved in the epidemic suggested that the phytoplasmas came from the same pool and that all three leafhopper species may have been involved in the epidemic. The different phytoplasma population profiles present in various crops may be attributed to the ecological constraints as a result of the vector-phytoplasma-plant three-way interaction.  相似文献

The cardiac biomarkers cardiac troponin T (cTnT) and I (cTnI) and the cardiac isoenzyme of creatine kinase (CKMB) are used extensively in human medicine to diagnose and provide valuable prognostic information in patients with ischemic, traumatic, and septic myocardial injury. We designed a study to establish normal values for these markers in healthy, neonatal foals and to compare them with values obtained from septic neonates in a referral hospital population. The 25th, 50th, 75th, and 95th percentiles for cTnI and CKMB in the healthy-foal population were 0.08, 0.14, 0.25, 0.49 ng/mL and 1.4, 2.3, 4.0, 7.4 ng/mL, respectively. The values obtained for cTnT were frequently (43/52 foals; 83%) below the lower limit of detection of the assay (0.009 ng/mL), but the median and range were 0.009 and 0.009-0.041 ng/mL, respectively. In the septic foal population, the 25th, 50th, 75th, and 95th percentile values for cTnI and CKMB were 0.05, 0.12, 0.22, and 1.10 ng/mL and 2.0, 4.4, 7.8, and 24 ng/mL, respectively. The values obtained for cTnT were less frequently below the lower limit of detection (23/38 foals; 60%) compared with the healthy foal population, and the median and range were 0.009 and 0.009-0.20 ng/mL, respectively. Significantly higher values were observed for cTnT and CKMB in septic foals compared with the healthy neonatal foal population, but there were no differences among septic foals in survivors compared with nonsurvivors. These findings suggest that myocardial injury occurs during septicemia in neonatal foals but that the injury is not associated with survival among septic foals.  相似文献
