A ground level survey of elephants in the Luangwa Valley, Zambia, revealed an altered population for characteristics measured approximately 10 years earlier by other investigators. Frequencies of new-borns, yearlings, and two-year-olds relative to adult females were nearly half the values reported a decade earlier. This apparent drop in calving rate could not be attributed to rainfall. Other factors, including stress from poaching, are discussed. Adult sex ratio favoured females by 2·5 to 1, which departs strikingly from the near-even sex ratio reported earlier. The possible relationship between a skewed sex ratio and reproductive success for this population is discussed. 相似文献

The Far Eastern Leopard (Panthera pardus orientalis; Schlegel, 1857) is perhaps the world’s most endangered large felid subspecies occurring in a single population of ?30 adults, and faces immediate risk of extinction unless additional populations can be established within its historical range in the Russian Far East. We used locations of leopard tracks (and their ungulate prey) collected from snow track surveys from 1997 to 2007 to develop resource selection functions (RSF) to identify potential habitat for reintroduction. We compared models that include prey versus those based on landscape covariates, and also included covariates related to human-induced mortality. To estimate potential population size, we used a habitat-based population estimate based on the ratio of population size and RSF value of occupied range. Far Eastern leopards selected for areas with high ungulate density, lower-elevation Korean pine forests on southwest facing slopes, and in areas far from human activity. Using this RSF model, we identified a total of 10,648 km2 in eight patches >500 km2 of potential Far Eastern leopard habitat that could harbor a potential population of 105.3 (57.9–147.2) adults. In combination with the existing population, successful reintroductions could result in a total of 139.2 (76.5–194.6) adult leopards, a 3–4-fold increase in population size. Our habitat models assist the reintroduction planning process by identifying factors that predict presence and potential suitable habitat. Identifying the highest quality, most connected patches, in combination with appropriate selection and training of released animals, is recommended for successfully reintroducing Far Eastern leopards, and potentially other endangered carnivores into the wild. 相似文献

Summary A geographically representative selection of germplasm of Beta vulgaris, section Beta has been assessed for characteristics important in sugarbeet breeding, including downy mildew resistance, resistance to aphid colonisation and infection by the beet virus yellow complex. The occurrence of maintainer lines for cytoplasmic male-steriles was also investigated. The consumption of ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa), lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta), common juniper (Juniperus communis), and Monterey cypress (Cupressus macrocarpa) causes abortions in pregnant cattle. Recent studies have identified isocupressic acid (1) as the primary abortificient compound in these plants. In vitro and in vivo studies using rumen and blood have shown isocupressic acid (1) is rapidly metabolized to agathic acid (3), dihydroagathic acid (4), and tetrahydroagathic acid (5). Rapid and sensitive diagnostic techniques are needed to identify poisoned animals, to study toxicokinetics, and to elucidate the mechanism of isocupressic acid-induced abortion in cattle. In this study, four competitive inhibition enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays for isocupressic acid and its sera metabolites were developed using polyclonal antibodies. One assay is specific to 1, whereas the other three assays show cross-reactivity to 3-5 in addition to 1. The assay specific to 1 had a limit of detection of 44.1 pg. The other assays which demonstrated cross-reactivity to the isocupressic acid blood metabolites also had comparably low limits of detection. One assay was used to follow the absorption and elimination profile of isocupressic acid metabolites in both cow serum and urine after oral dosage of a cow with common juniper. 相似文献

Acrylamide is a toxic substance that induces a variety of cellular responses including neurotoxicity, male reproductive toxicity, tumorigenicity, clastogenicity, and DNA alkylation. Evidence is provided that inhibition of the microtubule motor protein kinesin is responsible for acrylamide-induced clastogenicity and aneuploidy. Two kinesin motors, KIFC5A and KRP2, which are responsible for spindle assembly and disassembly of kinetochore MT, respectively, are inhibited by acrylamide. The inhibitory concentration for a response is below the levels shown to adversely affect the cytogenetic parameters. The relative contribution of these inhibitions compared to DNA alkylation is considered. The implications of inhibition of these kinesins as the site of action of acrylamide with regard to risk assessment are substantial as this event will have a threshold and a safe level of acrylamide can be determined. 相似文献

Circumstantial evidence exists for non‐N‐mineral element transfer in legume‐grass associations. Three experiments were conducted in an effort to directly demonstrate transfer of a non‐N‐mineral element in alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.)‐maize (Zea mays L.) and alfalfa‐grain sorghum (Sorghum vulgare Pers.) associations in two rooting media. Associations were established in double‐tube apparatus so that a single alfalfa plant was rooted in media of top‐ and bottom‐tubes, while an associated grass plant was rooted exclusively in the top‐tube (Intact treatment). Severed treatments (the control) were identical to the Intact treatments except the alfalfa roots in an air gap between the top‐and bottom‐tubes were excised. 86Rb was dispensed onto the medium of bottom tubes with movement of the radioisotope determined by analyzing the legume and grass tissues over time. 86Rb was detected in: i) soil‐grown maize associated with alfalfa within a 40‐day treatment period; ii) sand‐grown maize associated with alfalfa within 20 days after treatment and iii) sand‐grown sorghum associated with alfalfa within 10 days. Detection of 86Rb in grass plants associated with alfalfa demonstrated that transfer of this potassium analog can occur via the root systems of legume‐grass associations. 相似文献

Two species, Artemisia frigida Willd. (C3, semishrub, and dominant on overgrazed sites) and Cleistogenes squarrosa (Trin.) Keng (C4, perennial bunchgrass, and dominant or codominant on moderately grazed sites) were studied to determine the effects of defoliation, nitrogen (N) availability, competition, and their interactions on growth, biomass, and N allocation in a greenhouse experiment. The main treatments were: two nitrogen levels (N0 = 0 mg N pot–1, N1 = 60 mg N pot–1), two defoliation intensities (removing 60% of total aboveground biomass and no defoliation), and three competitive replacement series (monocultures of each species and mixtures at 0.5:0.5). Our results were inconsistent with our hypothesis on the adaptive mechanisms of A. frigida regarding the interactive effects of herbivory, N, and competition in determining its dominant position on overgrazed sites. Cleistogenes squarrosa will be replaced by A. frigida on overgrazed sites, although C. squarrosa had higher tolerance to defoliation than did A. frigida. Total biomass and N yield and 15N recovery of C. squarrosa in mixed culture were consistently lower than in monocultures, whereas those of A. frigida grown in mixtures were consistently higher than in monocultures, suggesting higher competitive ability of A. frigida. Our results suggest that interspecific competitive ability may be of equal or greater importance than herbivory tolerance in determining herbivore‐induced species replacement in semi‐arid Inner Mongolian steppe. In addition, the dominance of A. frigida on overgrazed sites has been attributed to its ability to shift plant‐plant interactions through gap colonization, root niche differentiation, and higher resistance to water stress. 相似文献
