Eight adult cats, 4 male and 4 female, (3.5 ± 0.9 [SD] kg) were used to determine the minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) of desflurane. Desflurane (DES) anesthesia was induced in a 20 L chamber with an oxygen inflow of 10 L/min and the DES vaporizer set at 18%. After 3.5 ± 0.5 min, the cats were removed from the chamber and anesthesia was maintained via mask (14% DES, 3L/min O2 ) until successful intubation. Anesthesia was maintained with DES in oxygen at a flow of at least 200 mL/kg/min through a nonrebreathing circuit. The time from the start of induction to completion of intubation was 6.2 ± 1.1 min. Esophageal temperature was maintained between 37.8°C and 38.6°C. Hand-collected end-tidal gas samples were obtained from a catheter positioned inside the lumen of the endotracheal tube. Inspired and end-tidal DES concentrations were measured with a Biochem 8100 anesthetic agent monitor that was calibrated with known gas standards and modified to accept hand-collected samples. A constant alveolar concentration of DES was maintained for at least 15 minutes, then a clamp was applied to the tail and the cat observed for gross purposeful movement. The end-tidal DES was then increased (if a positive response) or decreased (if a negative response) by 20% and the test repeated after 15 minutes of constant conditions. The final iteration was 10%. The MAC of DES in these cats was 9.79 ± 0.70 vol %. The FA /FI ratio for desflurane was always greater than 0.97. 相似文献

Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy (RBS) and microscopy demonstrate that the approximately 1400°C oxidation of levitated droplets of a natural Fe2+-bearing aluminosilicate (basalt) melt occurs by chemical diffusion of Fe2+ and Ca2+ to the free surface of the droplet; internal oxidation of the melt results from the required counterflux of electron holes. Diffusion of an oxygen species is not required. Diagnostic imaging techniques (conventional radiography, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging) are an essential tool in the diagnostic work-up of ear diseases. Conventional radiography is commonly used, but often lacks sensitivity. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) are complementary imaging studies of the middle ear, labyrinth, internal auditory canal and their contents. CT provides excellent images of bony structures and is indicated where osseous changes are of greatest diagnostic importance. MR is superior in imaging soft tissue components including intralabyrinthine fluid. Therefore, more than one of these imaging techniques may be required in order to make a diagnosis. 相似文献

Cytokines are major modulators of the immune system of all animals. The cloning and expression of recombinant cytokine genes have permitted the analysis of their immune function and role in the control of the immune response to disease and vaccination. While human, murine, and bovine genes have been cloned and sequenced, the cloning of ovine cytokine genes has not yet been reported. As sheep are of dominant economic importance to the Australian farming industry, it is of significance to clone and express these genes to facilitate the development of new and better vaccines and pharmaceuticals. We have initially selected ovine gamma-interferon (gamma-IFN) as a target cytokine gene. By the use of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), using primers based on the bovine gamma-interferon sequence, we have amplified the ovine gamma-interferon gene from crude messenger RNA extracted from lymphocytes. After cloning and DNA sequencing the gene, we found that ovine gamma-IFN is 93% identical to bovine gamma-IFN in amino acid sequence. This result indicates that the PCR method will be a rapid and efficient means for cloning other ovine cytokine genes. 相似文献

Upper mantle xenoliths found in ocean island basalts are an important window through which the oceanic mantle lithosphere may be viewed directly. Osmium isotopic data on peridotite xenoliths from the Kerguelen Islands, an archipelago that is located on the northern Kerguelen Plateau in the southern Indian Ocean, demonstrate that pieces of mantle of diverse provenance are present beneath the Islands. In particular, peridotites with unradiogenic osmium and ancient rhenium-depletion ages (to 1.36 x 10(9) years old) may be pieces of the Gondwanaland subcontinental lithosphere that were incorporated into the Indian Ocean lithosphere as a result of the rifting process. 相似文献

Friesian heifers grazing Cenchrus ciliaris cv. Biloela were supplemented with 0, 3 or 6 kg concentrates daily during weeks 10–34 (±1·7) of lactation during either the rainy or the dry season. The overall responses to concentrate were identical between seasons at 0·27 kg extra milk and solids corrected milk per kg. Supplementation increased total feed intake and modified the grazing behaviour of cows. For each kg concentrate organic matter eaten, herbage organic matter intake was reduced by 0·64 and 0·42 kg in the rainy and dry seasons respectively and the time spent grazing by 11 min. Higher intakes in the dry season were the result of an increased rate of biting and were reflected in liveweight change but not milk yield. 相似文献
