The medial temporal lobe is crucial for the ability to learn and retain new declarative memories. This form of memory includes the ability to quickly establish novel associations between unrelated items. To better understand the patterns of neural activity during associative memory formation, we recorded the activity of hippocampal neurons of macaque monkeys as they learned new associations. Hippocampal neurons signaled learning by changing their stimulus-selective response properties. This change in the pattern of selective neural activity occurred before, at the same time as, or after learning, which suggests that these neurons are involved in the initial formation of new associative memories.  相似文献

A liquid chromatographic (LC) method has been developed to determine the content of polydextrose, a water-soluble 1 calorie/g bulking agent, in food matrixes such as cookies, cakes, fruit spreads, and chocolate toppings. This analysis, which requires use of a blank matrix, provides a feasible means to control the manufacture of foods containing this additive and provides a component for the accurate determination of the caloric value of a particular food product. The method involves aqueous extraction of the polydextrose from the food matrix followed by separation on a carbohydrate analysis column. The LC system uses a mobile phase of 0.005M CaSO4.2H2O and a refractive index detector for quantitation. Polydextrose recoveries from the food matrixes varied from 91.5 to 100.9% with assay precision, expressed as coefficient of variation, ranging from 0.7 to 4.3%. Each error estimate was derived from 5 parallel determinations. The present methodology is precise and selective in contrast to the modified classical phenol-sulfuric acid colorimetric method for assaying carbohydrates, which had been used for polydextrose determination in food matrixes in the past. Because the coefficient of variation frequently exceeded 10%, replicate analyses were necessary to achieve quantitation.  相似文献

Micro‐organisms may develop an iron‐deficiency stress when grown in an alkaline environment and secrete ferric‐specific chelators known as siderophores. Some of these siderophores may have stability constants which can exceed 30. This is comparable to the synethetic Fe chelate FeEDDHA. Our objective was to determine if the Fe‐efficient T3238 FER tomato and the Fe‐inefficient T3238 fer tomato could use iron supplied as the siderophore ferrated‐rhodotorulic acid. After these two tomato cultivars were grown with adequate nutrition to obtain plants large enough for experimental testing, they were grown without iron until Fe‐deficiency‐stress symptoms developed and then iron was supplied as ferrated‐rhodoturulic acid. Iron efficient T3238 FER tomato utilized iron supplied as the siderophore and greened whereas, the Fe‐inefficient T3238 fer tomato plants were chlorotic because they could not use the iron in the siderophore. This study demonstrated that some higher plants subjected to various degrees of iron‐deficiency stress in nutrient culture may derive their iron requirement from siderophores of microbial origin.  相似文献

AIM: To investigate the anthelmintic properties of New Zealand native flax (Phormium tenax) for cattle, using a faecal egg count reduction test (FECRT).

METHODS: Twenty-six heifer calves with high (>300 epg) faecal nematode egg counts (FEC) were paired into two groups and fed either chopped flax leaves ad libitum, or barley straw at an equivalent dry matter (DM) rate, from Day 0–7; all were supplemented with 1.5 kg/head/day cereal feed supplement. On Days 8–10, all heifers were fed a common diet of 3.5 kg DM/ head/day barley straw and 1.5 kg/head/day cereal feed supplement. Heifers were weighed and faecal samples were collected on Days —6, 0, 7, and 10; samples were analysed in triplicate for FEC. The nutritive value of the flax and straw was analysed.

RESULTS: Both the flax and straw had low dry matter digestibility (DMD) and protein content. Although the flax-fed claves grew more than the controls, this may have been related to gut fill. Total daily faecal egg output was similar for flax and straw groups on Day 7 (14.7 vs 15.0 x 106 eggs/day, respectively) and Day 10 (14.9 vs 15.1 x 106 eggs/day, respectively). There was no difference in the change in FEC with time between the calves fed flax or straw diets.

CONCLUSION: Consumption of flax leaves did not reduce FEC in calves with a mixed nematode infection.  相似文献

Leaf water indices based on leaf reflectance may depend not only on the variable of interest, leaf water content, but may also be influenced by a variety of extraneous variables, leading to considerable data variability if such extraneous variables are not eliminated or taken into account. Here, we examined the nature of three potential extraneous variables: homogeneity of the leaf target area, the distance between a primary reflecting leaf and background material, and measurement sensitivity at various wavelengths. Although leaf water indices appear to be homogeneously distributed between major leaf veins, they may fluctuate substantially in areas where major veins are present. Leaf water indices may also depend to some extent on the distance between a primary reflecting leaf and any reflecting background material, at least for small distances. Leaf water indices utilizing the 970 or 1200 nm water absorption bands have been shown to be rather insensitive to changes in leaf water content, potentially resulting in low signal-to-noise ratios, an additional source of data variability.  相似文献

A 1.5-year-old female rabbit (doe) was presented with a 3-day history of lethargy, anorexia, and mild facial swelling. The animal died shortly after examination and severe, acute hemorrhagic pneumonia was noted grossly. An alphaherpesvirus consistent with leporid herpesvirus-4 was isolated and characterized from this animal. This is the first confirmed report of the disease in Canada.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The UK government has published plans to reduce UK agriculture's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. At the same time, the goal of global food security requires an increase in arable crop yields. Foliar disease control measures such as fungicides have an important role in meeting both objectives. RESULTS: It is estimated that UK winter barley production is associated with GHG emissions of 2770 kg CO2 eq. ha?1 of crop and 355 kg CO2 eq. t?1 of grain. Foliar disease control by fungicides is associated with decreases in GHG emissions of 42–60 kg CO2 eq. t?1 in UK winter barley and 29–39 kg CO2 eq. t?1 in UK spring barley. The sensitivity of these results to the impact of disease control on yield and to variant GHG emissions assumptions is presented. Fungicide treatment of the major UK arable crops is estimated to have directly decreased UK GHG emissions by over 1.5 Mt CO2 eq. in 2009. CONCLUSION: Crop disease control measures such as fungicide treatment reduce the GHG emissions associated with producing a tonne of grain. As national demand for food increases, greater yields as a result of disease control also decrease the need to convert land from non‐arable to arable use, which further mitigates GHG emissions.
