Testing meningeal strains of Streptococcus suis to detect M protein genes.

Previous reports have suggested that the surface proteins found in meningeal strains of Streptococcus suis might be similar to the M protein of group A streptococci. Fifty-five strains of S suis, including human and swine meningeal and pneumonic isolates, were tested for M protein genes by DNA probes representing the constant domain of the 3' end of the group A, M protein gene. None of the S suis strains examined was positive, indicating that these organisms either lack M protein genes or harbour different genes, not expressing the constant domains of protein M from group A.     

Effects of estradiol 17 beta implants on hematologic values and the chemiluminescence response of neutrophils of steers.

The effects of subcutaneous administration of a commercially available estradiol 17 beta implant on hematologic values and the chemiluminescence response of neutrophils were evaluated in 14 steers. Chemiluminescence and hematologic values were measured in treated (n = 8) and nontreated (n = 6) steers on days -14, -7, and -1 prior to implantation. Estradiol 17B was implanted into the treated group of steers on day 0, and blood samples were obtained from all steers on days 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, 15, 22, 29, 36, 43, and 50. The concentration of estrogen in serum was significantly (P = 0.0120) higher following implantation. Chemiluminescence and hematologic indices were not significantly affected by either implant status or serum concentrations of estrogen. The results of this study suggested that the use of implants containing estradiol 17 beta for promotion of weight gain in steers will not result in alterations of hematologic values or the neutrophil respiratory burst.     

Histologic pattern of testicular regrowths in caponized tom turkeys.

Testicular regrowths were observed in 10 of 21 tom turkeys between 28 and 32 weeks old, which was between 19 and 23 weeks after surgical caponization at 9 weeks of age. Regrowths were not observed in younger caponized toms. Two types of histologic patterns that differed from the normal pattern were observed in these regrowths. The first pattern was observed in seven regrowths and was characterized by a higher density of seminiferous tubules and more interstitial cells. The second pattern was seen in three regrowths and was characterized by extensive intertubular fibrosis, tubular detachment, and an increased number of interstitial cells. No correlation was found between the presence of these regrowths and plasma testosterone levels. The interstitial cell hyperplasia in all regrowths possibly was related to a diminished negative feedback by the endogenous testosterone on the release of luteinizing hormone from the pituitary. The appearance of regrowths at this age probably was related to the onset of normal physiological puberty.     

Plasma cell stomatitis-pharyngitis in cats: 40 cases (1973-1991).

Clinical signs, laboratory findings, and treatment results of 40 cats with the histologic diagnosis of plasma cell stomatitis-pharyngitis are discussed. Median age was 7.1 years, with no discernable sex predilection. Anorexia and difficulty prehending food were the most common clinical signs. Hyperproteinemia with associated hyperglobulinemia was the most common laboratory finding. Of various treatments, administration of corticosteroids or injectable gold (aurothioglucose) proved most effective in controlling the clinical signs.     

The control of Fannia canicularis in a poultry house using a black-light technique

The lesser house fly Fannia canicularis and other species of fly of animal health and public health importance, were shown to be attracted to “ black‐light “ traps in semi‐open poultry houses permitting free access and strong daylight competition. The fly populations were reduced and the number of ovipositions in the droppings pit apparently decreased. It is shown that the use of these traps, normally reserved for indoor insect control, can be extended to include certain farm situations.     

Structure of the sheep epidermis.

The stratum corneum measured on fresh frozen sections was found to be considerably thicker than previously reported. It was uniformly permeated with sebum, which also formed an intact film over the skin surface and it could readily be divided into two zones. The living epidermis was approximately half as thick as the stratum corneum.
