Characteristics of free-roaming cats and their caretakers   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
OBJECTIVES: To describe the characteristics of unowned, free-roaming cats and their caretakers who participated in a trap-neuter-return (TNR) program and to determine the effect of the program on free-roaming cat colonies. DESIGN: Prospective study. SAMPLE POPULATION: 101 caretakers of 920 unowned, free-roaming cats in 132 colonies in north central Florida. RESULTS: Most (85/101; 84%) caretakers were female. The median age was 45 years (range, 19 to 74 years). Most (89/101; 88%) caretakers owned pets and of those, most (67/101; 66%) owned cats. The major reasons for feeding free-roaming cats were sympathy and love of animals. Most caretakers reported that the cats they cared for were too wild to be adopted, but many also reported that they considered the cats to be like pets. The total surveyed cat population was 920 before participation in TNR and 678 after TNR. Mean colony size was 7 cats before TNR and 5.1 cats after TNR. Most cats lived on the caretaker's property. At the time of the survey, 70% (644/920) of the cats had been neutered. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The decrease in the surveyed free-roaming cat population was attributed to a reduction in births of new kittens, adoptions, deaths, and disappearances. Recognition of the human-animal bond that exists between caretakers and the feral cats they feed may facilitate the development of effective control programs for feral cat populations.  相似文献

An 8-year-old Golden Retriever dog was presented with a 10-month history of right-sided exophthalmos. Radiographs and CT demonstrated a linear density, suggestive of a foreign body, in the region of the ramus of the right mandible. A 7 cm stick, located medial to the right zygomatic arch, was removed during exploratory surgery. The dog recovered with the aid of antibiotics, however was left with a residual facial nerve paralysis.  相似文献

Carcass measurements for weight, longissimus muscle area, 12-13th-rib fat thickness, and marbling score, as well as for live animal measurements of weight at the time of ultrasound, ultrasound longissimus muscle area, ultrasound 12-13th-rib fat thickness, and ultrasound-predicted percentage ether extract were taken on 2,855 Angus steers. The average ages for steers at the time of ultrasound and at slaughter were 391 and 443 d, respectively. Genetic and environmental parameters were estimated for all eight traits in a multivariate animal model. In addition to a random animal effect, the model included a fixed effect for contemporary group and a covariate for measurement age. Heritabilities for carcass weight, carcass longissimus muscle area, carcass fat thickness, carcass marbling score, ultrasound weight, ultrasound longissimus muscle area, ultrasound fat thickness, and ultrasound-predicted percentage ether extract were 0.48, 0.45, 0.35, 0.42, 0.55, 0.29, 0.39, and 0.51, respectively. Genetic correlations between carcass and ultrasound longissimus muscle area, carcass and ultrasound fat thickness, carcass marbling score and ultrasound-predicted percentage ether extract, and carcass and ultrasound weight were 0.69, 0.82, 0.90, and 0.96, respectively. Additional estimates were derived from a six-trait multivariate animal model, which included all traits except those pertaining to weight. This model included a random animal effect, a fixed effect for contemporary group, as well as covariates for both measurement age and weight. Heritabilities for carcass longissimus muscle area, carcass fat thickness, carcass marbling score, ultrasound longissimus muscle area, ultrasound fat thickness, and ultrasound-predicted percentage ether extract were 0.36, 0.39, 0.40, 0.17, 0.38, and 0.49, respectively. Genetic correlations between carcass and ultrasound longissimus muscle area, carcass and ultrasound fat thickness, and carcass marbling and ultrasound-predicted percentage ether extract were 0.58, 0.86, and 0.94, respectively. The high, positive genetic correlations between carcass and the corresponding real-time ultrasound traits indicate that real-time ultrasound imaging is an alternative to carcass data collection in carcass progeny testing programs.  相似文献

Resistance, especially to the anthelmintic benzimidazoles (BZ), has been reported in horse cyathostomes world-wide. Diagnosis of resistance has traditionally been made by faecal egg count reduction (FECR) trials, however, this technique has limitations. Some of the shortcomings may be resolved by refining the test or by using an in vitro test. FECR tests and the larval development assay (LDA) were performed on adult horses held on 15 different horse properties across a wide geographical area of NSW, Australia. FECR were measured before and 10-14 after days treatment with oxibendazole (OBZ), morantel (MOR) or ivermectin (IVM) at recommended dose rates. Eight properties were rejected following low pre-treatment egg counts, leaving seven in the study. On these, the majority of larvae recovered from faecal cultures were cyathostomes. Using a definition of resistance as a FECR of <90%, resistance to OBZ was present on six properties and to MOR on two properties. Resistance to IVM was not detected. An alternative method of calculating FECR based on individual horse egg counts pre- and post-treatment was developed and results from the same properties compared with the results of the LDA. For example, for the BZ, correlation coefficients of values of lethal concentration to kill 50% of population (LC50) on LDA and FECR percentages were -0.536 before and -0.704 after OBZ treatment. We conclude that the LDA has the potential to be a single visit test for detection of anthelmintic resistance in horse cyathostomes but requires further investigation and standardisation.  相似文献

Mucor amphibiorum, a dimorphic fungus, causes ulcerative dermatitis and systemic infections in the platypus Ornithorhynchus anatinus in some river systems in Tasmania but apparently not in other regions of Australia. As yet there are no suitable tests for population surveys, nor for detection of internal lesions in live animals. Consequently, immunoglobulins were purified from the serum of platypuses and anti-immunoglobulin antisera were prepared in rabbits in order to develop an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for anti-M. amphibiorum antibodies. Antigens from plate-grown cultures resulted in greater signal-to-noise ratios in indirect ELISA than those from broth-grown cultures. Platypuses with clinical ulcerative dermatitis had elevated anti-Mucor antibody levels compared to apparently unaffected individuals. Seroconversion was observed in one animal coincident with the development of cutaneous ulcers. The results suggested that platypuses in affected rivers were exposed to M. amphibiorum at a higher frequency than the occurrence of clinical disease. Some platypuses from New South Wales had elevated antibody levels but these increased significantly with age suggesting exposure to cross-reactive antigens, although exposure to M. amphibiorum cannot be excluded. Further studies are warranted to determine factors that result in progression from infection to disease, the occurrence of the fungus in areas where disease has not been observed and the specificity of antigen used in ELISA.  相似文献

Fourteen 4- to 18-month-old vaccinated Greyhounds (10 males, 4 females) from three kennels in southern Ireland presented over a 2-year period with acute or insidious onset neurological signs. Head tilting, ataxia, recumbency, circling, and blindness were commonly observed, and animals were dull, dehydrated, and had lost weight. Hematologic and biochemical parameters reflected dehydration but were otherwise unremarkable. Microscopic examination revealed severe diffuse and focal gliosis and gemistocytosis accompanied by mononuclear cell perivascular cuffing in caudate nucleus and cortical gray matter of the cerebrum and in the periventricular gray matter of the anterior brainstem. Milder lesions were noted in the caudal brainstem, cranial spinal cord, and in the molecular layer of the cerebellum. This was accompanied by a lymphocyte and plasma cell infiltration of the cerebral and cerebellar meninges. Demyelination, neuropil necrosis, neuronophagia, and vasculitis were not observed. No inclusion bodies, fungi, or protozoal cysts were seen. Additional serologic and molecular pathology tests also failed to determine a cause, suggesting that these cases may represent a previously undiagnosed condition in the dog.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the extent to which herbivores are able to use conditioned food aversions and preferences to learn about the nutritional and toxic properties of food plants, when food options are simultaneously available. Conditioned food aversions and preferences have been invoked as important mechanisms by which free-ranging herbivores optimize food selection by learning about the negative and positive consequences of consuming particular plant species through a series of encounters. In most previous tests of this hypothesis, access to individual test foods has been separated in time, giving animals the opportunity to associate particular foods with particular post-ingestive effects. We presented animals with a more complex scenario by offering test feeds simultaneously during the learning phase. Such a test is an important step in assessing the importance of conditioned food responses as mechanisms by which herbivores learn to select an optimal diet. We first assessed the ability of goats to learn about test foods and their post-ingestive effects, when different conifer species were offered on separate days during the learning phase and animals were dosed with compounds eliciting positive, negative, or neutral post-ingestive effects. We then investigated the ability of animals to learn to make appropriate choices when all potential test foods were simultaneously available during the learning phase. The results confirmed that goats can learn to associate particular foods with particular post-ingestive effects and adjust their diet selection accordingly. The success with which animals made such associations was greatly reduced when they were presented with test foods simultaneously during the learning phase. When test foods were simultaneously available, animals tended to select a mixed diet, thereby reducing their opportunity to learn about the post-ingestive effects of particular foods. The results suggest that caution is required in extrapolating results of artificial conditioning experiments to free-ranging herbivores. The results also suggest that reducing the risk of toxicity through selection of mixed diets is an important component of a successful foraging strategy.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine plasma disposition after dermal application of a liposome-encapsulated formulation of lidocaine in cats. ANIMALS: 6 healthy adult cats with a mean (+/- SD) body weight of 4.1 +/- 0.44 kg. PROCEDURE: CBC determination and biochemical analysis of blood samples were performed for all cats. Cats were anesthetized by use of isoflurane, and catheters were placed IV in a central vein. The next day, blood samples were obtained from the catheters before and 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, and 24 hours after applying a 4% liposome-encapsulated lidocaine cream (15 mg/kg) to a clipped area over the cephalic vein. Plasma concentrations of lidocaine were analyzed with a high-performance liquid chromatography assay. Results-Two cats had minimal transdermal absorption of lidocaine, with lidocaine concentrations below the sensitivity of the assay at all but 1 or 2 time points. In the other 4 cats, the median maximum plasma concentration was 149.5 ng/ml, the median time to maximum plasma concentration was 2 hours, and the median area under the concentration versus time curve from zero to infinity was 1014.5 ng.h/ml. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Maximum plasma concentrations of lidocaine remained substantially below toxic plasma concentrations for cats. On the basis of these data, topical administration of a liposome-encapsulated lidocaine formulation at a dose of 15 mg/kg appears to be safe for use in healthy adult cats.  相似文献

Our objectives were to 1) establish ionised calcium (ICa), C-terminal PTH and biologically active PTH (intact molecule) concentrations in blood from normal horses, 2) examine the stability of ionised calcium and acid-base values in stored equine heparinised blood and serum and 3) check the applicability of the formulas based on these parameters in certain disease states. Mean +/- s.d. % ionised calcium in heparinised blood of normal Warmbloods was 51 +/- 2.7 (n = 20) of total calcium, range 1.45-1.75 mmol/l (n = 15) at Michigan State University and 1.43-1.69 mmol/l (n = 20) at Utrecht University. Mean +/- s.d. EDTA plasma concentration for intact +/PTH in normal horses measured 0.6 +/- 0.3 pmol/l (n = 11). Both mean serum and the heparinised blood ionised calcium concentrations changed (not significantly) after 102 h storage at room temperature. Six cycles of freezing and thawing did not affect serum ionised calcium concentration significantly. Ionised calcium concentration and pH in heparinised blood of 20 normal Warmbloods were used to calculate the regression equation for the prediction of the adjusted ionised calcium concentration to a pH of 7.4. The linear regression equation found was: adjusted plasma ICa at pH 7.4 mmol/l = -6.4570 + 0.8739 x (measured pH) + 0.9944 x (measured ICa mmol/l). By means of this formula, mean adjusted ionised calcium concentration in heparinised blood calculated was 100% of the actual value given by the analyser in the normal horses. When using this formula in horses with colic or diarrhoea, mean adjusted ionised calcium concentration was underestimated by 0.2 and 0.3%, respectively. Furthermore, to adjust the measured ionised calcium concentration in heparinised blood to a pH of 7.4 in healthy as well as in 2 groups of diseased horses 2 formulas with a good prediction are now available.  相似文献
