This review covers developments in non-invasive techniques for quality analysis and inspection of specialty crops, mainly fresh fruits and vegetables, over the past decade up to the year 2010. Presented and discussed in this review are advanced sensing technologies including computer vision, spectroscopy, X-rays, magnetic resonance, mechanical contact, chemical sensing, wireless sensor networks and radio-frequency identification sensors. The current status of different sensing systems is described in the context of commercial application. The review also discusses future research needs and potentials of these sensing technologies. Emphases are placed on those technologies that have been proven effective or have shown great potential for agro-food applications. Despite significant progress in the development of non-invasive techniques for quality assessment of fruits and vegetables, the pace for adoption of these technologies by the specialty crop industry has been slow.  相似文献

Kelp biomass availability for mass abalone cultivation remains a critical issue in Chile. The technical and economic feasibility of a commercial scale kelp farming activity has not been established. This study describes the production and economic results of a pilot scale unit installed in southern Chile. Our results show 25 kg m?1 of production over a 9‐month spring‐summer period, and 16.2 kg m?1 during the autumn‐winter period. These values indicate that a total biomass production of 41.3 kg (wet) ma?1 year?1 can be obtained by placing the culture lines at 4 m intervals. High quality animal food‐grade plants with a 9% protein content, over 5 m in length were harvested. Sensitivity analysis showed that by cultivating 30–50 ha with a market value of US$ 78 ton?1, a return on investment can be made after the first year.  相似文献

The marine-derived filamentous fungus Asteromyces cruciatus 763, obtained off the coast of La Jolla, San Diego, USA, yielded the new pentapeptide lajollamide A (1), along with the known compounds regiolone (2), hyalodendrin (3), gliovictin (4), 1N-norgliovicitin (5), and bis-N-norgliovictin (6). The planar structure of lajollamide A (1) was determined by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy in combination with mass spectrometry. The absolute configuration of lajollamide A (1) was unambiguously solved by total synthesis which provided three additional diastereomers of 1 and also revealed that an unexpected acid-mediated partial racemization (2:1) of the L-leucine and L-N-Me-leucine residues occurred during the chemical degradation process. The biological activities of the isolated metabolites, in particular their antimicrobial properties, were investigated in a series of assay systems.  相似文献

The root-knot nematode Meloidogyne incognita is widely distributed and a major pathogen of cotton (Gossypium spp.) worldwide. The objectives of this study were to assess the genetic variability and aggressiveness of Brazilian populations of M. incognita in cotton. Five populations of M. incognita and one isolate of M. enterolobii (outgroup) were used in the molecular analysis. Our results showed that only 2.7 % of the RAPD and AFLP fragments were polymorphic. Despite the existence of two races (races 3 and 4) and two esterase phenotypes (I1 and I2), a low genetic variability among populations was observed, which might be due to the mitotic parthenogenetic mode of reproduction of this pathogen. The aggressiveness/virulence among populations towards different cotton genotypes was also studied. None of the populations was virulent to the resistant cotton genotypes M-315 RNR, TX-25, CIR1343, Wild Mexican Jack Jones and CIR1348 (reproduction factor <1). Two populations of M. incognita from the states of Mato Grosso do Sul and Parana (Umuarama) (races 4 and 3, respectively) were highly aggressive to the susceptible control FM966 and virulent to the accessions LA-887 and Clevewilt-6 that showed moderate resistance to other populations tested.  相似文献

Tomato leaves showing severe leaf spot symptoms have been observed and sampled in the central west and southwest Taiwan during 2015 and 2016. The symptoms were similar to those of bacterial leaf spot/late blight diseases, but only Stemphylium-like fungi were consistently isolated from the diseased tomato. Upon spray inoculation of tomato, Stemphylium-like isolates caused leaf spot symptoms identical to those of naturally infected plants, and the pathogenic isolates were successfully re-isolated from inoculated leaves. The tomato-pathogenic isolates were identified as S. lycopersici based on morphological characterization and molecular identification. S. lycopersici has been previously reported to cause gray leaf spot of tomato in the temperate regions, but the majority of S. lycopersici-caused lesions were black/dark brown rather than gray in our surveillance. Accordingly, it is suggested that S. lycopersici-caused disease of tomato is named Stemphylium leaf spot of tomato more appropriately than tomato gray leaf spot. Moreover, S. lycopersici-caused leaf spot disease on tomato has been distributed in major tomato production regions in Taiwan. The information provided by our study will be important for future breeding of tomato cultivars, especially for tomato producers in Taiwan.  相似文献

This pilot study was designed to determine whether cyclooxygenase (COX)-1, COX-2, or both are expressed in normal turtle tissues and whether level of expression changes when tissue becomes inflamed. Five eastern box turtles, Terrapene carolina carolina, that either died or were euthanatized due to disease or injuries were used for this work. Tissues were obtained from the five turtles. Western blot analysis was used to evaluate tissues for COX-1 and COX-2 proteins. Densiometric analysis was used to compare Western blot bands within each turtle. COX-1 and COX-2 were found in the liver, kidney, grossly normal muscle, and grossly traumatized (inflamed) muscle of all study turtles. In all cases, COX-1 and COX-2 proteins were increased in traumatized muscle over grossly normal nontraumatized muscle. The highest levels of COX-1 and COX-2 proteins were found in kidney and liver. There was no statistical difference between the amount of COX-1 protein in liver and kidney, but traumatized muscle compared with grossly normal muscle had significantly greater COX-1 but not COX 2 protein concentrations. There was no statistical difference between the amount of COX-2 protein in liver and kidney. Traumatized muscle expressed nonstatistically significant greater amounts of COX-2 compared with grossly normal muscle. COX-1 and COX-2 proteins are expressed in turtle tissues, and both isoforms are upregulated during inflammation of muscle tissue. Traditional nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) that block both COX isoforms might be more efficacious than COX-2-selective drugs. This work suggests that NSAIDs should be evaluated for potential liver and kidney toxicity in turtles.  相似文献

Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) is an important oilseed crop with clear sensibility to salt stress. In this study, we evaluated silicon (Si) effect on the nitrogen metabolism and antioxidant enzyme activity in sunflower plants subjected to salinity. A 4 × 4 factorial arrangement of treatments in a completely randomized design with four replicates was used, consisting of four concentrations of Si (0.0; 1.0; 1.5; and 2.0 mM) and four concentrations of NaCl (0; 50; 100; and 150 mM) in the nutrient solution. The salinity reduced the nitrate content, but the increasing Si concentration in the medium improved the nitrate uptake, leading this ion to accumulate in salt-stressed plants, particularly in the roots. The nitrate reductase activity and the proline and soluble N-amino contents were also significantly increased by Si in salt conditions. The salinity increased electrolyte leakage and reduced the activity of enzymes superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase and catalase in sunflower plants, but these decreases were reversed by Si at 2 mM, thus alleviating the effects of salinity on these variables. We conclude that Si is able to positively modulate nitrogen metabolism and antioxidant enzyme activities in sunflower plants in order to alleviate the harmful effects of salinity.  相似文献

A case-control study was done to identify factors associated with the development of equine degenerative myeloencephalopathy (EDM). Questionnaires were mailed to the owners of 146 horses admitted to the New York State College of Veterinary Medicine between November 1978 and June 1987 and diagnosed as having EDM by histologic examination. Questionnaires also were sent to owners of 402 clinically normal horses admitted to the college during the same period. Data were compared between the EDM-affected and control groups (56 and 179 questionnaires returned, respectively). Risk factors identified included the use of insecticide applied to foals, exposure of foals to wood preservatives, and foals frequently spending time on dirt lots while outside. Foals spending time outside on green pastures was a protective factor. Foals from dams that had had an EDM-affected foal were at higher risk of developing EDM than were foals from other dams.  相似文献
