The method to measure hardness and other viscoelastic properties of intact wheat kernels is presented. Wheat with 9.3% moisture showed high elastic behavior compared with wheat tempered at 22.5% moisture that showed a plastic behavior. Load‐deformation curves showed that bread wheat behaves as a more plastic material than durum wheat, which is a more elastic material. Yield point of all the wheat samples was ≈18.5 N, independent of wheat type and moisture content. The height of the wheat kernel increased linearly, and the compression area increased exponentially, with increasing moisture content. The modulus of elasticity of wheat ranged from 99.2 MPa for 22.5% moisture content to 394.8 MPa for 9.3% moisture content. Young's modulus range for soft wheat such as Salamanca, Saturno, and Cortazar cultivars was 232.2–308.5 MPa, as compared with Rayón bread wheat at 321.5 MPa and the Altar, Sofía, and Rafi cultivars of durum wheat that had elastic moduli of 438.7–485.8 MPa. The compression force and final stress decreased from 69.9 N and 40.1 MPa in soft wheat to 90 N and 78.9 MPa in durum, respectively. Total work range was 14.7 MPa/sec in soft wheat to 19.7 MPa/sec for durum wheat and, as expected, was higher in the durum and bread wheat than in soft wheat. The plastic part ranged from 2.4 MPa/sec in soft wheat to 0.6 MPa/sec in durum wheat.  相似文献

The evolutionary relationships among Verticillium dahliae vegetative compatibility (VCG) subgroups VCG1A, VCG1B, VCG2A, VCG2B, VCG4A, VCG4B, and VCG6 were investigated by parsimony analysis of amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) fingerprints and sequences of six DNA regions (actin, beta-tubulin, calmodulin, and histone 3 genes, the ITS 1 and 2 regions of the rDNA, and a V. dahliae-specific sequence), using 101 isolates of diverse host and geographic origin. Polymorphisms in gene sequences among isolates of different VCGs were very low and individual gene genealogies provided very little resolution at the VCG level. The combined analysis of all DNA regions differentiated all VCG subgroups except for isolates in VCG1A and VCG1B. VCG clonal lineages in V. dahliae and evolutionary relationships among them were resolved independently by analyses of AFLP fingerprints, multiple gene genealogies, and the combined data set of AFLP fingerprinting and multiple gene genealogies. Two main lineages (I and II) were identified with lineage II comprising two closely related subgroups of VCGs. Lineage I included VCG1A, VCG1B, and VCG2B334; and lineage II included, VCG2A and VCG4B (subclade 1); and VCG2B824, VCG4A, and VCG6 (subclade 2). VCG subgroups were monophyletic except for VCG2B that appeared polyphyletic. Limiting the parsimony analysis either to AFLP fingerprints or DNA sequences would have obscured intra-VCG differentiation. Therefore, the dual approach represented by the independent and combined analyses of AFLP fingerprints and DNA sequences was a highly valuable method for the identification of phylogenetic relationships at the intraspecific level in V. dahliae.  相似文献

Fungus-growing ants have been found recently to be symbiotic with actinomycetes living on the ant’s cuticle; these bacteria are inhibitory to soil fungi that are detrimental to the ants’ fungus gardens. In order to investigate whether actinomycetes found on the cuticle of attine ants also had inhibitory properties against plant pathogenic fungi, we isolated 32 strains of actinomycetes from fungus-growing ants (Atta, Trachymyrmex, andCyphomyrmex), from the Mexican states of Coahuila, Nuevo León and Tamaulipas. Of the actinomycetes tested against selected plant pathogenic fungi (Alternaria solani, Aspergillus flavus, Colletotrichum lindemuthianum, Rhizoctonia solani, Sclerotium sp.) on Czapek-Dox agar medium, 13 isolates inhibited at least one of the fungi.C. lindemuthianum was inhibited by 11 actinomycetes, andRhizoctonia by three. Coleomegilla maculata DeGeer is an omnivorous lady beetle that feeds on natural or alternative prey and artificial foods, which allows its laboratory rearing for use on augmentative biocontrol. In addition, C. maculata may supplement its diet with pollen and nectar, which helps in its conservation in agroecosystems. This study aimed to evaluate if Apiaceous flowers (Anethum graveolens L. and Coriadrum sativum L.), with and without alternative prey [eggs of Ephestia kuehniella (Zeller) or larvae of Drosophila melanogaster Meigen] or an artificial food (aqueous solution of honey), may guarantee the survival and complete development of the immature and adult stages of C. maculata in the laboratory. The immature stages developed only when Apiaceous flowers were offered with E. kuehniella eggs. The food with only one of the alternative prey (moth eggs or fly larvae) or moth eggs + honey solution resulted in fertile adults; however, the number of eggs/cluster was greater for the foods with E. kuehniella eggs + honey solution, A. graveolens flowers, or only D. melanogaster. Foods comprising only the two Apiaceous species, only the honey solution, or only water resulted in larval development up to a specific instar. Adults of C. maculata also survived on these foods, but there was no oviposition. The foods of the two Apiaceous species produced heavier adults only when associated with E. kuehniella eggs. The results indicate that the zoophytophagous habit of C. maculata should be considered in conservation biocontrol programs aimed at using this lady beetle to control crop pests.  相似文献

High Plains wheat mosaic virus (HPWMoV) has recently been assigned to genus Emaravirus and is the causal agent of High Plains disease. In this work the geographical distribution and first molecular detection of HPWMoV in Argentina are reported. The virus was detected in six provinces and nine hosts, including wheat, corn, oat and barley, as well as weeds, which play an important role in the epidemiology of this disease. Molecular and phylogenetic analyses of a portion of RNA3 nucleoprotein gene sequence showed that five HPWMoV isolates from different wheat growing regions of Argentina were identical, and suggest a single introduction of HPWMoV to this country, possibly through corn seeds. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first molecular detection of HPWMoV in South America. These results highlight the importance of certification of viruses-free cereal seeds and strict controls for material transfer between different countries to prevent the entry not only of new pathogens but also of new variants or strain at sites where the pest has already been detected.  相似文献

Pseudocercospora fruit and leaf spot (PFLS) of citrus, caused by Pseudocercospora angolensis, was recently described in Ghana and has spread in most citrus-growing areas of the country. A survey of PFLS incidence was conducted in the Eastern Region. Orchards were georeferenced and data on altitude, annual mean temperature, and annual precipitation were obtained from the WorldClim database. Fruit drop due to PFLS and other pests and diseases was evaluated in three orchards. Field efficacies of 4-week, 6-week and 8-week schedules with carbendazim + mancozeb were evaluated in the major and minor fruit production seasons. Ordinal logistic regression and generalized linear models were fitted in each case according to the nature of the data and possible overdispersion. Disease incidence in the sweet orange orchards surveyed was 25–100 %, with higher values in higher altitude areas exposed to lower temperatures and higher rainfall. PFLS was the main problem causing yield losses, associated with 84–87 % of fruit dropped on the orchard floor. PFLS severity on shoots and incidence on fruit 12 weeks after full bloom was significantly reduced by all fungicide schedules evaluated. The effects of fungicides on PFLS severity in fruit at harvest were not substantial because of intense fruit drop. The 8-week schedule showed the lowest effectiveness in reducing fruit drop and thus the 6-week schedule is preferred. Further research is needed for an integrated management of PFLS in Ghana.  相似文献

Data of 127,800 Iberian piglets were used to study genetic parameters of mortality at birth at the piglet level. These records proceed from three data sets: 4,987 litter of 2,156 sows of a dam line, 2,768 litter of 817 sows of a complete diallel cross between four Iberian strains and 7,153 litter of 2,113 sows of the Torbiscal composite line. Perinatal mortality was considered as a binary trait, and Bayesian threshold animal models were fitted to separately analyse the three data sets. The posterior means of direct heritability were 0.010, 0.004 and 0.003, and those of maternal heritability were 0.034, 0.011 and 0.014 for dam line, diallel cross and Torbiscal line, respectively. Important effects of litter size and parity order were inferred in the three data sets, of within‐breed cross‐breeding parameters in the diallel cross and of sex and sow handling in the Torbiscal line Therefore, the inclusion of perinatal mortality in the objective of selection is questionable in this breed and strategies for reducing piglet mortality successful in other breeds should be considered.  相似文献

1. The objective of this work was to determine the effect of slaughter age and stunning method on the quality of turkey meat from poultry processing plants.

2. One hundred B.U.T. Premium turkeys were divided into 4 groups of 25 animals according to slaughter age (15 or 17 weeks) and CO2 stunning procedure (G1 stepwise: step1: 30% CO2, 15 s; step 2: 55% CO2, 40 s; step 3: 70% CO2, 45 s; G2: progressive increase of the CO2 concentration at a rate of 0.8% per s for 100 s). The quality of the breast meat was determined in fillets taken at different post-mortem times.

3. There were differences between the stunning groups for several variables (pH: 6.01 ± 0.01 and 5.95 ± 0.02; a*: ?1.84 ± 0.05 and ?2.21 ± 0.04; b*: 4.99 ± 0.15 and 4.68 ± 0.16; drip loss: 0.85 ± 0.02 and 0.71 ± 0.02 for G1 and G2, respectively), while no significant differences were found for L*, cooking loss and texture analysed with a Warner Bratzler Shear Force cell (WBSF).

4. Slaughter age had a significant effect on all the parameters studied (pH: 6.01 ± 0.01 and 5.95 ± 0.01; a*: ?2.21 ± 0.05 and ?1.88 ± 0.05, b*: 5.50 ± 0.17 and 4.42 ± 0.15; drip loss: 0.71 ± 0.02 and 0.86 ± 0.02, cooking loss: 12.56 ± 0.22 and 14.69 ± 0.16 for turkeys slaughtered at 15 and 17 w, respectively) except on L* and WBSF.

5. The ageing of the meat affected pH, colour values, drip loss and WBSF, with differing degrees of evolution: mean values of L* (39.36 ± 0.35. 45.77 ± 0.20 and 46.30 ± 0.24, for 20 min, 24 h and 7 d post mortem, respectively) and drip loss (0.75 ± 0.03 and 0.84 ± 0.02 for 24 h and 7 d post mortem, respectively) increased, those of a* (?1.77 ± 0.08, ?1.94 ± 0.07 and ?2.22 ± 0.05 for 20 min, 24 h and 7 d post mortem, respectively) and WBSF decreased (3.73 ± 0.06 and 2.63 ± 0.04 for 24 h and 7 d post mortem, respectively), those of pH decreased in the first 24 h and remained stable for the next 6 d (6.19 ± 0.02, 5.87 ± 0.01 and 5.88 ± 0.01), and those of b* increased in the first 24 h post-mortem and remained stable for the next 6 d (3.26 ± 0.31, 5.86 ± 0.16 and 5.47 ± 0.08).

6. The results revealed no critical differences between stunning methods, and suggest that animals slaughtered at 15 weeks present higher quality meat than those slaughtered at 17 weeks.  相似文献
