Purpose

Frequent cultivation and overhead irrigation have led to severe surface crusting, erosion and poor irrigation performance on sandy clay loam soils in the Coal River Valley, Tasmania, Australia. This study was established to identify the key soil properties related to aggregate breakdown determined by different methods, and explore options for reducing soil crusting.

Materials and methods

Soil aggregates were collected from 0 to 5 cm depth from 20 sites managed for packet salad and lettuce production. The stability of air-dried 2.00–4.75 mm aggregates was determined by rainfall simulation, wet sieving and clay dispersion. Soil aggregates were analysed for particle size, mineralogy, soluble and exchangeable cations, pH, EC, labile carbon and total carbon. The association between aggregate stability and the measured soil properties was explored using Spearman correlation, linear regression and regression tree analysis.

Result and discussion

Aggregate stability determined by rainfall simulation was closely associated with soil properties that promote aggregation, including effective cation exchangeable capacity (ECEC) and the proportion of polyvalent cations (Ca2+, Al3+). In contrast, aggregate stability determined by wet sieving was associated with soil properties that promote disaggregation, including quartz and sand content, and to lesser extent, the proportion of monovalent cations (especially K+). Clay dispersion was closely associated with pH, quartz content, soil texture and the sodium adsorption ratio. Soil carbon appeared to have only moderate influence on aggregate stability, but not clay dispersion, while labile carbon was not significantly related to any measure of aggregate stability or clay dispersion. Similarly, the proportion of Na+ ions was not related to either measure of aggregate stability and was only moderately related to clay dispersion.

Conclusions

Options for improving aggregate stability appear limited as aggregate stability was strongly related to the content of inherent soil properties such as sand/quartz and smectite contents. However, high correlation between exchangeable Ca2+ and aggregate stability determined by rainfall simulation indicates that soil crusting may be reduced through application of products that rich in Ca2+ such as gypsum.

Objectives: To compare the monotonic biomechanical properties and fatigue life of a 5.5‐mm‐broad locking compression plate (5.5 LCP) fixation with a 4.5‐mm‐broad locking compression plate (4.5 LCP) fixation to repair osteotomized equine 3rd metacarpal (MC3) bones. Study Design: In vitro biomechanical testing of paired cadaveric equine MC3 with a middiaphyseal osteotomy, stabilized by 1 of 2 methods for fracture fixation. Animal Population: Fifteen pairs of adult equine cadaveric MC3 bones. Methods: Fifteen pairs of equine MC3 were divided into 3 test groups (5 pairs each) for (1) 4‐point bending single cycle to failure testing, (2) 4‐point bending cyclic fatigue testing, and (3) torsional single cycle to failure testing. An 8‐hole, 5.5 LCP was applied to the dorsal surface of 1 randomly selected bone from each pair and an 8‐hole, 4.5 LCP was applied dorsally to the contralateral bone from each pair using a combination of cortical and locking screws. All plates and screws were applied using standard ASIF techniques. All MC3 bones had middiaphyseal osteotomies. Mean test variable values for each method were compared using a paired t‐test within each group with significance set at P<.05. Results: Mean yield load, yield bending moment, composite rigidity, failure load, and failure bending moment, under 4‐point bending, single cycle to failure, of the 5.5 LCP fixation were significantly greater than those of the 4.5 LCP fixation. Mean cycles to failure in 4‐point bending of the 5.5 LCP fixation (170,535±19,166) was significantly greater than that of the 4.5 LCP fixation (129,629±14,054). Mean yield load, mean composite rigidity, and mean failure load under torsional testing, single cycle to failure was significantly greater for the broad 5.5 LCP fixation compared with the 4.5 LCP fixation. In single cycle to failure under torsion, the mean±SD values for the 5.5 LCP and the 4.5 LCP fixation techniques, respectively, were: yield load, 151.4±19.6 and 97.6±12.1 N m; composite rigidity, 790.3±58.1 and 412.3±28.1 N m/rad; and failure load: 162.1±20.2 and 117.9±14.6 N m. Conclusion: The 5.5 LCP was superior to the 4.5 LCP in resisting static overload forces (palmarodorsal 4‐point bending and torsional) and in resisting cyclic fatigue under palmarodorsal 4‐point bending. Clinical Relevance: These in vitro study results may provide information to aid in selection of an LCP for repair of equine long bone fractures.  相似文献

There is an on-going need to identify medications suitable for the long-term treatment of canine atopic dermatitis (CAD). Masitinib mesilate is a potent and selective tyrosine kinase inhibitor of the c-KIT receptor. A strong relationship exists between the SCF/c-KIT pathway and pathogenesis of CAD, suggesting that masitinib may potentially fulfil the above role. This study reports on an uncontrolled pilot study of masitinib in CAD. Masitinib was administered orally to 11 dogs at a mean dose of 11.0 ± 1.83 mg/kg/day (free base) for 28 days. Treatment response was assessed by evolution of clinical appearance according to a modified version of the Canine Atopic Dermatitis Extent and Severity Index (mCADESI), pruritus scale and surface area of lesions. Masitinib improved CAD with a mean reduction in mCADESI of 50.7 ± 29.8% (95% C.I. = 29.4–72.0; p = 0.0004) at day 28 relative to baseline, with 8/10, 8/10 and 4/10 dogs showing improvement of ≥33%, ≥40% and ≥50%, respectively. Improvement was further evidenced by a decrease in pruritus score and the surface area of lesions. No serious or severe adverse events occurred during this trial, although 6/11 dogs presented with mild to moderate treatment related adverse events. There is sufficient compelling evidence to warrant further investigation.  相似文献

We have recently shown that inactivated parapoxvirus ovis (iPPVO) effectively stimulates canine blood phagocytes. However, a potential link between innate and adaptive immunity induced by iPPVO remained open. The objective of this study was to define the effects of repeated iPPVO treatment of dogs to evaluate (i) iPPVO-specific antibody production, and (ii) modulation of iPPVO-induced oxidative burst by anti-iPPVO antibodies. Serum analysis of dogs treated repeatedly with iPPVO (Zylexis®) showed transient production of non-neutralising iPPVO-specific IgG. There was a correlation between iPPVO-specific IgG levels and enhanced oxidative burst rates in vitro upon transfer of immune sera. Even four years after Zylexis® treatment considerably stronger oxidative burst rates in response to iPPVO were observed in monocytes and PMN, whereas only moderate burst rates were detected in monocytes, but not in PMN, from dogs treated with a placebo. Depletion of serum IgG by protein A-sepharose or by parapoxvirus ovis coupled to sepharose abolished the increase of oxidative burst responses and resulted in burst rates similar to blood leukocytes from control dogs. However, uptake of viral particles was found to be independent of iPPVO-specific IgG and restricted to cells with dendritic and monocytic morphology. These data demonstrate that non-neutralising iPPVO-specific IgG is produced during treatment with Zylexis®. Moreover, for the first time the interaction of iPPVO with antibodies is shown to enhance oxidative burst.  相似文献

Monitoring is essential to evaluate the success of translocations, but is frequently neglected. One exception has been the reinforcement of the otter (Lutra lutra) population in the Derwent and Esk catchments in North East England, UK, between 1990 and 1993. Here, we use data on otter sprainting activity collected before, during and after translocations to identify relationships with vegetation, food resources and physical river characteristics. Sprainting activity increased significantly with trout density, stream order, and surrounding cover by woodland and semi-natural grassland vegetation, and decreased significantly with stream gradient. The form of these relationships was unimodal, sprainting activity peaking at intermediate levels of environmental variables. A logistic regression model including variables relating to fish density, the physical characteristics of the river and surrounding vegetation cover was able to predict the presence or absence of otter sprainting at different survey sites with an accuracy of 92%. Fish density and the physical characteristics of the river were the most important factors in the model. Models such as this are of practical use for assessing the likely success of future otter translocations, both in North East England and other regions of the UK and Europe.  相似文献

Calibration of pesticide leaching models may be undertaken to evaluate the ability of models to simulate experimental data, to assist in their parameterisation where values for input parameters are difficult to determine experimentally, to determine values for specific model inputs (e.g. sorption and degradation parameters) and to allow extrapolations to be carried out. Although calibration of leaching models is a critical phase in the assessment of pesticide exposure, lack of guidance means that calibration procedures default to the modeller. This may result in different calibration and extrapolation results for different individuals depending on the procedures used, and thus may influence decisions regarding the placement of crop-protection products on the market. A number of issues are discussed in this paper including data requirements and assessment of data quality, the selection of a model and parameters for performing calibration, the use of automated calibration techniques as opposed to more traditional trial-and-error approaches, difficulties in the comparison of simulated and measured data, differences in calibration procedures, and the assessment of parameter values derived by calibration. Guidelines for the reporting of calibration activities within the scope of pesticide registration are proposed.  相似文献

Biotin conjugates are of considerable value in investigating the mode of action of biologically active compounds. Two biotin conjugates related to the antifungal compound cymoxanil [1-(2-cyano-2-methoximinoacetyl)-3-ethyl urea] were prepared as the first step in an effort to employ display cloning to identify the compound's target site. In the first conjugate, prepared in five steps, the biotin moiety was attached at the position occupied by the ethyl group in cymoxanil. In the second conjugate, prepared in four steps, the biotin moiety was attached through the oxime functional group.  相似文献

ABSTRACT A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay using a set of specific primers and a dual-labeled probe (TaqMan) was developed to quantify the amount of Aphanomyces euteiches DNA in alfalfa plants exhibiting varying levels of disease severity. The study included isolates of race 1 and race 2 of A. euteiches. The assay also discriminated between alfalfa populations for resistance based on analysis of DNA extracted from bulked plant samples. Analysis of individual plants and bulked plant samples of standard check populations with both pathogen isolates resulted in Spearman rank correlations between pathogen DNA content and disease severity index ratings that were greater than 0.75 and highly significant (P < 0.0005). In experiments with a race 1 isolate, the amount of pathogen DNA present in the resistant check WAPH-1 was significantly less than in the susceptible check Saranac. In experiments with a race 2 isolate, the amount of pathogen DNA in the resistant check WAPH-5 was significantly less than in either of the susceptible checks, Saranac and WAPH-1. Discrimination between commercial cultivars based on quantitative PCR analysis of bulked plant samples was similar to classification based on visual assessment of disease severity.  相似文献
