Three peanut cultivars, Georgia Green, NC-V11, and ANorden, were grown using production practices that encouraged the development of Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV). The progression of TSWV infection was examined through the season using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) tests on different tissue types [roots, leaves, pegs (pod attachment stem structures) and pods] and the effect of TSWV infection on physiological functions was examined at three harvest dates. Plants were classed into three severity categories: (i) no TSWV symptoms or previous positive ELISA tests; (ii) less than 50% of leaf tissue exhibiting TSWV symptoms; and (iii) greater than 50% of leaf tissue affected. TSWV showed a slow rate of infection at the beginning of the season and a greater percentage of infection of the roots than in the leaves. Photosynthesis was reduced in virus-affected infected plants by an average of 30% at the mid-season harvest and 51% at the late season harvest compared with virus-free plants across all three cultivars. Leaf tissue with symptoms had lower photosynthetic rates than healthy leaves. There were small differences among cultivars, with cv. ANorden maintaining higher average photosynthetic levels than cv. Georgia Green and higher transpirational levels than cv. NC-V11. The ability to maintain high assimilation physiology in the presence of the virus may help cultivars withstand TSWV infection and maintain final yields.  相似文献

Summary Registration and commercial release of crop cultivars improved using recombinant DNA technologies will require extensive field testing of the transgenic lines. In addition to testing the efficacy of the transferred gene(s), regulatory bodies and farmers need data from large scale agronomic studies to provide assurance that the foreign DNA does not adversely affect normal agronomic productivity or quality of the crop. Here, five transgenic sulfonylurea resistant flax (Linum usitatissimum) lines were included in a multiple location cultivar registration trial, evaluated and compared with four standard commercial cultivars and 24 other (conventionally produced) breeding lines. The transgenic lines did not appear to be affected by T-DNA for any quality or agronomic parameter tested, including yield.  相似文献

One-day-old poults were placed on littler on which poults had previously developed diarrhea, increased mortality, and stunting. Small intestines, pancreas, and liver were evaluated histologically. Morphometric evaluations were conducted to determine villous length and crypt depth. Poults were evaluated for malabsorption utilizing D-xylose and lipid absorption tests. Compared with controls, the gastrointestinal tract of affected birds was grossly distended, was fluid-filled, and had thin, flaccid walls on days 5 and 8. Ceca were distended with brown watery fluid and gas on days 5, 8, and 12. No histologic lesions were present in the liver, pancreas, or pancreatic ducts, and only mild inflammatory changes were present in the small intestine. Villous atrophy and crypt hypertrophy were present in the small intestine on days 5, 8, 12, 16, and 21. Morphometry revealed significant decreases in villous lengths and increases in crypt depth throughout the trial. D-Xylose and lipid absorption were significantly decreased on days 8 and 11. Intestinal epithelial damage by infectious agents with subsequent villous atrophy is postulated to have produced malabsorptive diarrhea.  相似文献

Gross, microscopic, and morphometric evaluations of the proximal tibiotarsal growth plate, along with analysis of plasma calcium, phosphorus, and 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 concentrations, were conducted for 3 weeks to determine the development and character of skeletal lesions. Poults developed enteritis with diarrhea and dehydration. Body weights and shank lengths were significantly decreased. Plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 concentrations were significantly decreased. Plasma calcium was significantly decreased on day 8. Plasma phosphorus concentrations were significantly increased on day 8 and were significantly decreased on days 15, 18, and 22. Growth plates narrowed on days 8 and 11 and expanded on days 15, 18, and 22. The proliferating-prehypertrophy zone significantly decreased in length on days 11, 18, and 22, and significantly increased in length on day 15. The unmineralized hypertrophy zone was significantly increased in length on days 15, 18, and 22. The mineralized hypertrophy zone was significantly decreased in length on all days. Skeletal lesions during the poult malabsorption syndrome evolved from an early osteoporotic lesion associated with hypocalcemia to a rachitic lesion associated with depleted vitamin D and hypophosphatemia.  相似文献

Partitioning of contact networks into communities allows groupings of epidemiologically related nodes to be derived, that could inform the design of disease surveillance and control strategies, e.g. contact tracing or design of 'firebreaks' for disease spread. However, these are only of merit if they persist longer than the timescale of interventions. Here, we apply different methods to identify concordance between network partitions across time for two animal trading networks, those of salmon in Scotland (2002-2004) and livestock in Great Britain (2003-2004). Both trading networks are similar in that they moderately agree over time in terms of their community structures, but this concordance is higher--and therefore community structure is more consistent--when only the 'core' network of nodes involved in trading over the whole time series is considered. In neither case was higher agreement found between partitions close together in time. These measures differ in their absolute values unless appropriate standardisation is applied. Once standardised, the measures gave similar values for both network types.  相似文献

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is associated with infectious endometritis in horses. Although infectious endometritis is often considered a venereal infection, there is relatively limited genotypic-based evidence to support this mode of transmission. The study sought to determine the relatedness between genital P. aeruginosa isolates collected from a limited geographical region using molecular strain typing. Enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus PCR typing was performed on 93 isolates collected between 2005 and 2009 from 2058 thoroughbred horses (including 18 stallions) at 66 studs. While P. aeruginosa was not detected in the stallions, 53/93 (57%) mares harbouring P. aeruginosa had clonally related strains, which included a single dominant genotype detected in 42 (45%) mares from 13 different studs. These novel findings suggest that most equine genital P. aeruginosa infections in this region may have been acquired from mechanisms other than direct horse to horse transmission. Instead, other potential acquisition pathways, as well as strain specific adaptation to the equine genital tract, should be investigated.  相似文献

Feedbacks to global warming may cause terrestrial ecosystems to add to anthropogenic CO2 emissions, thus exacerbating climate change. The contribution that soil respiration makes to these terrestrial emissions, particularly from carbon-rich soils such as peatlands, is of significant importance and its response to changing climatic conditions is of considerable debate. We collected intact soil cores from an upland blanket bog situated within the northern Pennines, England, UK and investigated the individual and interactive effects of three primary controls on soil organic matter decomposition: (i) temperature (5, 10 and 15 °C); (ii) moisture (50 and 100% field capacity – FC); and (iii) substrate quality, using increasing depth from the surface (0–10, 10–20 and 20–30 cm) as an analogue for increased recalcitrance of soil organic material. Statistical analysis of the results showed that temperature, moisture and substrate quality all significantly affected rates of peat decomposition. Q10 values indicated that the temperature sensitivity of older/more recalcitrant soil organic matter significantly increased (relative to more labile peat) under reduced soil moisture (50% FC) conditions, but not under 100% FC, suggesting that soil microorganisms decomposing the more recalcitrant soil material preferred more aerated conditions. Radiocarbon analyses revealed that soil decomposers were able to respire older, more recalcitrant soil organic matter and that the source of the material (deduced from the δ13C analyses) subject to decomposition, changed depending on depth in the peat profile.  相似文献
