A saucer-shaped defect involving the lateral trochlear ridge of the talus and a radiopaque joint fragment were evident on radiographs of the left tarsus in a 6-month-old Rottweiler. Surgical treatment involved removal of the joint fragment and debridement of the defect. Histologic interpretation of the specimen was a chondral fragment. It is important to realize the possibility of a lesion in the location described, as this may be an additional site for osteochondrosis dissecans of the canine tarsus.  相似文献

Chromium (Cr) is an essential mineral element and has been used in pig diets to improve growth performance, insulin sensitivity, immune response and carcase traits and to reduce heat or other stress responses. The aims of thiss study were to determine the impact of nano-sized chromium tripicolinate (nCrPic) on growth performance, feed efficiency and carcase characteristics of finisher gilts during the summer period. A total of 60 finisher Large White x Landrace gilts were stratified on initial weight and then within strata randomly allocated into two treatment groups in three replicates during mid-summer for 28 days. All pigs were housed in individual pens and had ad libitum access to feed and water. Pigs were fed either a control finisher diet (wheat-based diet containing 13.8 MJ digestible energy (DE) per kilogram and 0.56 g available lysine/MJ DE) or a control diet containing 400 ppb Cr as nCrPic. Dietary nCrPic supplementation increased feed intake by 6 % over the entire study (P?=?0.05). In particular, dietary nCrPic increased average daily feed intake (ADFI) by 8 % (P?=?0.02) during the final 2 weeks of the study. Moreover, dietary nCrPic tended to improve average daily feed (ADFI) over the entire study (P?=?0.09). However, there were no significant effects of nCrPic on feed conversion ratio (FCR), final weight, hot standard carcase weight (HCWT), P2 depth or dressing percentage. Plasma cortisol was decreased by 25 % (P?=?0.06) by dietary nCrPic supplementation. However, there were no effects of nCrPic on plasma glucose, insulin and nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA), might because of the higher feed intake. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that dietary nCrPic supplementation at 400 ppb can increase feed intake in finisher gilts during mid-summer, suggesting that nCrPic can ameliorate some of the negative effects of heat stress in pigs, possibly via decreased of circulating cortisol.  相似文献

A 12-year-old Morgan gelding was examined for colic of 3 days duration. Signs of depression, colic, diarrhea, and endotoxemia persisted despite aggressive medical therapy and surgical exploration. Culture results from gastric fluid and feces yielded many colonies of Clostridium perfringens. This organism also was recovered from peritoneal fluid 10 days after admission; consequently, the horse was euthanized. At necropsy, a localized gas-filled, necrotic stomach wall was found; many mucosal and submucosal gas blebs were visible. Culture of this tissue yielded Clostridium perfringens. Emphysematous gastritis is a fulminant infection of the stomach wall caused by gas-forming organisms that gain access to the submucosa via mucosal defects such as ulcers. This condition has been reported infrequently in people, and the case reported herein represents the first instance of emphysematous gastritis in the horse.  相似文献

Skeletal deformities, a major contributing factor to economic losses in market-age turkeys, may be associated with the poult malabsorption syndrome. A study was performed to determine whether the naturally occurring malabsorption syndrome produces skeletal lesions in turkeys at market age. Poults were placed on litter on which poults had previously developed malabsorption. Exposed poults developed enteric disease with 21% mortality during the first 3 weeks. Controls had no enteric disease and no mortality. At the end of the study, 20-week-old exposed turkeys weighed 0.621 kg (5%) less than controls and had a higher incidence of angular limb deformities with significantly higher angulation scores. Exposed turkeys also had a greater incidence of rotated tibias and bowed tibias. The mechanical property of tibial shear strength was significantly lower in turkeys that had survived the earlier poult malabsorption syndrome.  相似文献

Progress is being made, mainly by ICARDA but also elsewhere, in breeding for resistance to Botrytis, AScochyta, Uromyces, and Orobanche; and some lines have resistance to more than one pathogen. The strategy is to extend multiple resistance but also to seek new and durable forms of resistance. Internationally coordinated programs are needed to maintain the momentum of this work.Tolerance of abiotic stresses leads to types suited to dry or cold environments rather than broad adaptability, but in this cross-pollinated species, the more hybrid vigor expressed by a cultivar, the more it is likely to tolerate various stresses.  相似文献

Field studies using open-top chambers were conducted at USDA-BARC involving the growth of soybeans ('89 & '90), wheat ('91 & '92), and corn ('91), under increased concentrations of atmospheric CO2 and O3. Treatment responses were compared in all cases to plants grown in charcoal-filtered (CF) air (seasonal 7-h mean = 25±3 n mol O3 mol–1) having 350 or 500 mol CO2 mol–1. Elevated seasonal O3 levels for the soybean, wheat, and corn studies averaged 72.2±4, 62.7±2, and 70.2 n mol O3 mol–1, respectively. Results presented were obtained for plants grown in silt loam soil under well-watered conditions. Grain yield increases in response to elevated CO2 in the absence of O3 stress averaged 9.0, 12.0, and 1.0% for soybean, wheat, and corn; respectively. Reductions in grain yields in response to the elevated O3 treatments at 350 mol CO, mol–1 averaged 20.0, 29.0 and 13.0% for soybean, wheat, and corn, respectively. Reductions in grain yields in response to elevated O3 at 500 mol CO2 mol–1 averaged 20.0, 8.0, and 7.0% for soybean, wheat, and corn, respectively. Dry biomass and harvest index in wheat were significantly reduced by O3 stress at 350 mol mol 1 CO2 but not at 500 u mol mol–1 CO2. Seed weight 1000–1 for scybeans and wheat was significantly increased by CO2 enrichment and decreased by O3 stress. Standardized terminology for the porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) status of swine herds is necessary to facilitate communication between veterinarians, swine producers, genetic companies, and other industry participants. It is also required for implementation of regional and national efforts towards PRRSV control and elimination. The purpose of this paper is to provide a herd classification system for describing the PRRSV status of herds, based upon a set of definitions reflecting the biology and ecology of PRRSV. The herd classification system was developed by a definitions committee formed jointly by the American Association of Swine Veterinarians (AASV) and the United States Department of Agriculture PRRS-Coordinated Agricultural Project, and was approved by the AASV Board of Directors on March 9, 2010. The committee included veterinarians from private practice and industry, researchers, and representatives from AASV and the National Pork Board. Breeding herds, with or without growing pigs on the same premises, are categorized as Positive Unstable (Category I), Positive Stable (Category II), Provisional Negative (Category III), or Negative (Category IV) on the basis of herd shedding and exposure status. Growing-pig herds are categorized as Positive or Negative. Recommended testing procedures and decision rules for herd classification are detailed.  相似文献

Soil solution was collected to identify seasonal trends in its chemistry and to examine relationships between the concentrations of ions and variables that may control them. Samples were collected fortnightly at 10 cm and 50 cm depth in a blanket peat soil at Moor House–Upper Teesdale National Nature Reserve in the northern Pennine uplands of England. Dissolved organic carbon at 10 cm peaked each summer and correlated most strongly with temperature. At both depths Na+ and Cl were the dominant ions, reflecting the oceanic climate. Over the 3‐year sampling period, concentrations of the principal anions and cations at 10 cm varied little except during the autumns of 1994 and 1995 following unusually dry summers. At these times concentrations of SO42–‐S increased from < 3 μmol to a maximum of 430 μmol and were balanced by smaller increases in Na+, Mg2+, Ca2+ and H+. The SO42– concentration at 10 cm was most strongly correlated with depth to the water Table 3 weeks prior to sampling. At 50 cm depth in the peat a small increase in SO42– occurred only during the autumn of 1995, and the concentration of SO42– at this depth correlated most strongly with that at 10 cm. At neither depth were there any strong correlations with deposition. The increase in H+ concentration associated with the peak in SO42– at 10 cm depth represents a fall in pH from usual values around 4.2 to 3.5.

A 6-month-old Ayrshire calf had a systemic growth defect of cartilage. The most severe changes occurred in articular cartilage and epiphyseal plates of long bones where disturbance of ossification, necrosis, erosion, vascular invasion, proliferation of cartilaginous and fibrous tissue were seen. The lesions probably were the result of a failure in the initial phases of ossification and mechanical pressure was responsible for their severity in the cartilage of the limbs.  相似文献
