Historical forest clearance and agriculture have had profound effects on the landscape of the southeastern United States. This study examines a site called Monument Hill located in the eastern foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in central Virginia in order to better understand the long-term effects of historical agriculture on soil and streams. This site, deeply gullied and drained by an incised first-order stream, was first settled in the mid-eighteenth century and became part of a large nineteenth-century plantation. A thick sediment fan at the base of the hill buried and preserved a historical soil surface, archaeological artifacts, and woody debris datable by dendrochronology. The geomorphology of the site, along with limited historical data and tree ages from the mature second-growth forest cover, has enabled reconstruction of the sequence of land-use changes and measurement of geomorphic response over two and a half centuries.  相似文献

The concentration of benzoxazinoids (BX) was measured in field soils at selected intervals after rye residue was either incorporated or left on the soil surface. The spectrum of compounds arising in the soil persisted approximately two weeks and was dominated by methoxy containing BX compounds, which were only minor components of the rye foliage. Growth assays with lettuce and smooth pigweed species showed inhibition when treated soils were tested during the first two weeks after rye applications; however, there were no sufficient concentrations of any one BX compound in the soil to explain these affects. Solution applications of two pure BX compounds, benzoxazolin-2(3H)-one (BOA) and 6-methoxy-benzoxazolin-2(3H)-one (MBOA), to the surface of soils revealed that movement into the soil column was minimal (greater than 70% BOA and 97% MBOA remained in the top 1-cm of soil profiles) and that the time course for their complete dissipation was less than 24 h.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate use of balloon-expandable and self-expanding metallic stents in management of malignant urethral obstructions in dogs. DESIGN: Original study. ANIMALS: 12 dogs with malignant urethral obstructions. PROCEDURES: The extent and location of urethral obstructions and the diameter of adjacent unaffected luminal segments were determined by use of fluoroscopically guided wires and measuring catheters. Stents were chosen to extend approximately 1 cm proximal and distal to the obstruction. Stent diameters were chosen to be approximately 10% greater than the diameter of healthy portions of the urethra to prevent displacement. Stents were placed in the urethra under fluoroscopic guidance to restore luminal patency. RESULTS: 3 dogs received balloon-expandable metallic stents, and 9 dogs received self-expanding metallic stents. The placement procedures were rapid, safe, and effective at restoring luminal patency and were not associated with major complications. Complications included recurrent urethral obstruction secondary to blood clot formation and urethral edema in 1 dog and stent dislodgement into the urinary bladder in 1 dog. All dogs were able to urinate immediately after the procedure. Nine dogs (3/4 females and 6/8 males) were continent or mildly incontinent after stent placement. Of the remaining 3 dogs, 2 developed severe incontinence and 1 had an atonic bladder. Seven dogs were considered to have good to excellent outcome, 3 had fair outcome, and 2 had poor outcome. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Transurethral placement of metallic stents was a safe and effective palliative treatment option for dogs with malignant urethral obstructions.  相似文献

LC-MS4 has been used to detect and characterize in green coffee beans 15 quantitatively minor p-coumaric acid-containing chlorogenic acids not previously reported in nature. These comprise 3,4-di-p-coumaroylquinic acid, 3,5-di-p-coumaroylquinic acid, and 4,5-di-p-coumaroylquinic acid (Mr 484); 3-p-coumaroyl-4-caffeoylquinic acid, 3-p-coumaroyl-5-caffeoylquinic acid, 4-p-coumaroyl-5-caffeoylquinic acid, 3-caffeoyl-4-p-coumaroyl-quinic acid, 3-caffeoyl-5-p-coumaroyl-quinic acid; and 4-caffeoyl-5-p-coumaroyl-quinic acid (Mr 500); 3-p-coumaroyl-4-feruloylquinic acid, 3-p-coumaroyl-5-feruloylquinic acid and 4-p-coumaroyl-5-feruloylquinic acid (Mr 514); and 4-dimethoxycinnamoyl-5-p-coumaroylquinic acid and two isomers (Mr 528) for which identities could not be assigned unequivocally. Structures have been assigned on the basis of LC-MS4 patterns of fragmentation. Forty-five chlorogenic acids have now been characterized in green Robusta coffee beans.  相似文献

  • 1. Improved linkage between physical characteristics of rivers and biological performance or potential is a recurrent theme in contemporary river survey, management and design. This paper examines the degree to which flow biotopes and functional habitats may be differentiated with respect to physical habitat delimiters, i.e. flow depth, velocity and Froude number.
  • 2. Re‐examination of published data demonstrates only very broad associations between biotopes, functional habitats and ‘low’, ‘medium’ and ‘high’ bands in the chosen physical habitat delimiter. The associations are also not consistent between different delimiters.
  • 3. Re‐analysis is complicated by considerations of research design and methodology. Further studies are required with greater control on the circumstances of observation (particularly flow stage and seasonality), which explicitly control for variance within and between different river cases, and which adopt more consistent terminology.
  • 4. Field data for a single river reach at low and high flows indicate that use of the Froude number, in particular, requires careful interpretation. Very different velocity and depth combinations can exhibit similar Froude numbers. This may obscure important contrasts, such as those between channel margin and channel centreline environments.
  • 5. Field data also reveal that the flow characteristics of even basic (riffle or pool) units of channel morphology exhibit strong stage‐dependence. There are also significant variations when channel margins are isolated from the definitions of the bedforms or analysis of the data. Current practice which seeks to simplify field survey to channel cross‐section transects is therefore likely to be misleading.
  • 6. Given these difficulties, attempts to link biotopes with ecological response appear premature. Further research might, however, be directed to identifying possible associations between combinations of flow types and bedforms or functional habitats. In this sense, the biotope concept may be more profitably employed as one of several surrogate measures for potential biodiversity.

Wood is an important component of forested stream ecosystems, and stream restoration efforts often incorporate large wood. In most cases, however, stream restoration projects are implemented without information regarding the amount of wood that historically occurred or the natural rates of wood recruitment. This study uses a space-for-time analysis to quantify large wood loading to 28 streams in the northeastern US with a range of in-stream and riparian forest characteristics. We document the current volume and frequency of occurrence of large wood in streams with riparian forests varying in their stage of stand development as well as stream size and gradient. Linear models relating stream wood characteristics to stream geomorphic and forest characteristics were compared using Akaike's Information Criterion (AIC) model selection. The AIC analysis indicated that the volume and frequency of large wood and wood accumulations (wood jams) in streams was most closely associated with the age of the dominant canopy trees in the riparian forest (best models: log10(large wood volume (m3 100 m−1)) = (0.0036 × stand age) − 0.2281, p < 0.001, r2 = 0.80; and large wood frequency (number per 100 m) = (0.1326 × stand age) + 7.3952, p < 001, r2 = 0.63). Bankfull width was an important factor accounting for wood volume per unit area (m3 ha−1) but not the volume of wood per length of stream (100 m−1). The empirical models developed in this study were unsuccessful in predicting wood loading in other regions, most likely due to difference in forest characteristics and the legacy of forest disturbance. However, these models may be applicable in other streams in the northeastern US or in streams with comparable riparian forests, underlying geology, and disturbance regimes—factors that could alter long-term wood loading dynamics. Our results highlight the importance of understanding region-specific processes when planning stream restoration and stream management projects.  相似文献

This prospective experimental simulation study evaluated the efficiency, ease of use (EOU) and cost of administering chemotherapy with two closed system transfer devices (CSTD, Equashield? and PhaSeal®) and no CSTD. Forty‐six veterinary technicians (VT) working in oncology specialty practices were timed during chemotherapy administration simulated with water and a model canine limb 10 times with each system and with no CSTD. EOU and likelihood of recommending each system were rated by VT using visual analog scales. Costs were obtained from veterinary distributors. Administration was fastest with Equashield? (P = 0.0003), but the difference was not enough to affect case flow. Equashield? was easier to use than PhaSeal® or no CSTD (P = 0.002), however VT recommended both CSTD more strongly than no CSTD (P < 0.0001). Equashield? cost less than PhaSeal® but was sold only in bulk quantities. CSTD did not decrease efficiency in administering chemotherapy and were readily accepted by VT.  相似文献

Previously, starch granules of maize (Zea mays), sorghum (Sorghum bicolor), and millet (Pennisetum americanum) were found to contain channels connecting the interior cavity with the outside surface, and the channels of maize starch channels were found to contain, presumably to be lined with, proteins. One objective of this study was to identify and characterize channel proteins of maize starch granules. A putative starch granule channel protein extract was subjected to 2D-PAGE. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry was used to identify the proteins. Data analysis indicated the presence of actin-like and tubulin-like (FtsZ) proteins, ADP-glucose pyrophosphorylase large and small subunits (Shrunken2 [Sh2] and Brittle2 [Bt2], respectively), granule-bound starch synthase (GBSS), and Brittle1 (Bt1, an adenylate translocator). A combination of Western blot analysis and immunolocalization confirmed the presence of an actin-like protein within the starch granule structure. Another objective was to determine the origin of maize starch granule channels. TEM examination of maize endosperm amyloplasts that did not contain a formed starch granule revealed structures that were connected to the amyloplast membrane and extended inward to the center of the plastid.  相似文献

The radiographic features of aortic bulb/valve mineralization in 20 dogs were reviewed. Extent, shape, number, and location of mineralization were recorded. Five of the dogs had additional alternate imaging examinations, including bone scintigraphy, echocardiography, and thoracic computed tomography. A necropsy was done on one dog, and the area of mineralization was evaluated using routine histology. The median age was 10 (mean 9.7; SD +/- 2.7) years. There were five males, seven neutered males, one female, and seven neutered females. The breeds were: Irish setter (6); rottweiler (7); chow-chow (1); miniature dachshund (1); borzoi (1); English setter (1); English springer spaniel (1); great Dane (1); and greyhound (1). Dogs with both right and left lateral radiographs (n = 17) had mineralization visible on both views, more conspicuously on the right lateral radiograph (n = 12). Aortic bulb mineralization was identified on the ventrodorsal radiograph of only one dog. On lateral radiographs, the aortic bulb mineralization was localized within the 4th intercostal space and in the craniodorsal quadrant of the cardiac silhouette. In nine of the dogs, there were complex or multiple mineralizations and in 11 dogs, there was a single curvilinear mineral opacity oriented in a caudoventral to craniodorsal direction. In all radiographs, the mineralization was in the expected position of the aortic bulb, and echocardiography (n = 4), spiral computed tomography (n = 2), and necropsy (n = 1) confirmed that the mineralization was within the aortic bulb. Clinical pathologic data of the dogs suggested no reason for metastatic mineralization. Exact etiopathogenesis of the lesions were not determined in this study. Based on the histologic findings in one dog, the mineralization seen in the aortic root is similar to a form of dystrophic mineralization called Monckeberg's calcific arteriosclerosis in humans. No clinical signs attributable to the mineralization were observed.  相似文献

Of twenty non-ionic surfactant formulations tested in 1974–75 several were successful as eradicants of overwintering apple mildew as were two ionic materials. The incidence of Nectria canker was increased by sprays applied in October but less so by the same materials applied in January or February when phytoxicity measured in terms of fruit yield was also less. PP 222, a non-ionic surfactant introduced in 1975, proved to be an efficient eradicant of mildew in 1976. Although the yield of fruit from most sprayed trees was greater than from controls, the best mildew eradicants did not produce greatest yields in the same year, perhaps indicating adverse effects of treatments on the trees. However, significantly better yields of fruit obtained in the year following the dormant season eradication of primary mildew, suggest long term beneficial effects of these treatments.  相似文献
