The Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, plays a significant role in the aquaculture industry in Ireland. Episodes of increased mortality in C. gigas have been described in many countries, and in Ireland since 2008. The cause of mortality events in C. gigas spat and larvae is suspected to be multifactorial, with ostreid herpesvirus 1 (OsHV-1, in particular OsHV-1 μvar) considered a necessary, but not sufficient, cause. The objectives of the current study were to describe mortality events that occurred in C. gigas in Ireland during the summer of 2011 and to identify any associated environmental, husbandry and oyster endogenous factors. A prospective cohort study was conducted during 2010–2012, involving 80 study batches, located at 24 sites within 17 bays. All 17 bays had previously tested positive for OsHV-1 μvar. All study farmers were initially surveyed to gather relevant data on each study batch, which was then tracked from placement in the bay to first grading. The outcome of interest was cumulative batch-level mortality (%). Environmental data at high and low mortality sites were compared, and a risk factor analysis, using a multiple linear regression mixed effects model, was conducted. Cumulative batch mortality ranged from 2% to 100% (median = 16%, interquartile range: 10–34%). The final multivariable risk factor model indicated that batches imported from French hatcheries had significantly lower mortalities than non-French hatcheries; sites which tested negative for OsHV-1 μvar during the study had significantly lower mortalities than sites which tested positive and mortalities increased with temperature until a peak was reached. There were several differences between the seed stocks from French and non-French hatcheries, including prior OsHV-1 μvar exposure and ploidy. A range of risk factors relating to farm management were also considered, but were not found significant. The relative importance of prior OsHV-1 μvar infection and ploidy will become clearer with ongoing selection towards OsHV-1 μvar resistant oysters. Work is currently underway in Ireland to investigate these factors further, by tracking seed from various hatchery sources which were put to sea in 2012 under similar husbandry and environmental conditions.  相似文献

Although the ovine spine is a useful research model for intervertebral disc pathology and vertebral surgery, there is little peer‐reviewed information regarding the MRI anatomy of the ovine spine. To describe the lumbar spine MRI anatomy, 10 lumbar segments of cadaver ewes were imaged by 1.5‐Tesla MR. Sagittal and transverse sequences were performed in T1 and T2 weighting (T1W, T2W), and the images were compared to gross anatomic sagittal and transverse sections performed through frozen spines. MRI was able to define most anatomic structures of the ovine spine in a similar way as can be imaged in humans. In both T1W and T2W, the signals of ovine IVDs were similar to those observed in humans. Salient anatomic features were identified: (1) a 2‐ to 3‐mm linear zone of hypersignal was noticed on both extremities of the vertebral body parallel to the vertebral plates in sagittal planes; (2) the tendon of the crura of the diaphragm appeared as a hypointense circular structure between hypaxial muscles and the aorta and caudal vena cava; (3) dorsal and ventral longitudinal ligaments and ligamentum flavum were poorly imaged; (4) no ilio‐lumbar ligament was present; (5) the spinal cord ended between S1–S2 level, and the peripheral white matter and central grey matter were easily distinguished on T1W and T2W images. This study provides useful reference images to researchers working with ovine models.  相似文献

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: There are no data on the frequency of post operative complications following keratoma removal, such as recurrence, hoof wall instability and excessive granulation tissue formation, or their relation to the method of surgical removal. OBJECTIVE: To identify important factors in the outcome for horses undergoing surgical removal of a keratoma and compare the post operative complications encountered following keratoma removal by complete hoof wall resection (CR) and partial hoof wall resection (PR). HYPOTHESIS: Horses undergoing PR would have fewer post operative complications and would return to work more quickly than those undergoing CR. METHODS: A retrospective review of medical records from one equine hospital identified 26 horses that underwent removal of a keratoma by CR or PR. Clinical, radiological and surgical findings and outcome were analysed. RESULTS: Common clinical signs included lameness and the presence of a subsolar abscess. Fourteen horses underwent CR and 12 PR. The complication rate following CR (71%) was significantly lower than that following PR (25%) (P<0.01). Complications encountered included excess granulation tissue formation, hoof crack formation and keratoma recurrence at the surgical site. The time taken to return to full work post operatively was significantly shorter in horses undergoing PR compared to CR (P<0.01). All horses, except one, returned to their previous exercise level. CONCLUSIONS: PR resulted in fewer post operative complications and a more rapid return to athletic activity than CR. Potential relevance: Although the overall complication rate for CR was higher than for PR, the overall prognosis for return to soundness and the previous performance level is very good.  相似文献

The characteristics of, and pre-existing pathology associated with 75 cases of fatal lateral condylar fracture sustained by Thoroughbreds while racing in the UK were described. Cases were identified from 220 cases of fatal distal limb fracture submitted as part of studies designed to identify risk factors for all fatal distal limb fractures. Fractures were most common in hurdle races and affected the right forelimb twice as often as the left forelimb. Fracture dimensions were similar to previous reports, however there was a much greater prevalence of articular and diaphyseal comminution and of concurrent fractures in the current report. Pre-existing pathology was particularly common in the medial and lateral parasagittal grooves of the distal articular surfaces of the third metacarpus/metatarsus. The degree of this pathology was not associated with horse age, length of career or number of career starts.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to identify risk factors, during racing, associated with imminent fatal distal limb fracture in Thoroughbreds. One hundred and nine cases of fatal distal limb fracture were identified from all 59 UK racecourses over a 2-year period (February 1999-January 2001). Three uninjured control horses were randomly selected from the same race as the case horse. Videos of races in which fractures occurred were viewed using a defined protocol. Fractures in flat races occurred at any time during the race, whereas 74% (45/61) of cases in national hunt type races occurred in the second half of races. More than 75% (79/103) of cases were spontaneous, i.e. there was no obvious external influence such as a fall at a fence or collision with another horse. Sixty-six percent (44/67) of horses, sustaining a forelimb fracture, fractured the forelimb they were using as lead leg at the time of fracture. When case and control horses were compared, horses that were: (a) making good progress through the race, (b) reluctant to start and (c) received encouragement in the final 10s before the time of fracture, were more likely to sustain a fracture.  相似文献

贮藏室内适宜的贮藏温度是进行科学贮藏和决定贮藏质量的重要条件.为研究相同贮藏条件下不同质量马铃薯堆内部温度的差异,以内蒙古半地下式马铃薯贮藏室为试验场地,将食用型"冀张226"马铃薯按单薯质量进行分级,以筐装方式进行堆码,同时用传感器采集贮藏过程中的温度数据,然后对数据进行分析、对比.结果表明:整个贮藏过程中,分级后的所有马铃薯堆的内部温度整体变化规律基本一致,均为先降低后升高,但单薯质量小的马铃薯堆内部温度的稳定性要优于单薯质量大的马铃薯堆.温度下降阶段,马铃薯堆的内部温度与马铃薯单薯质量大小呈负相关;温度上升阶段,马铃薯堆内部温度上升率与马铃薯单薯质量呈正相关;不同马铃薯堆在贮藏过程中的最低温度与马铃薯单薯质量呈负相关;分级后的马铃薯堆内部温度的稳定性要优于未分级的马铃薯堆.  相似文献

This study reports on the attachment preference of a faecally derived bacterium, Escherichia coli, to soil particles of defined size fractions. In a batch sorption experiment using a clay loam soil it was found that 35% of introduced E. coli cells were associated with soil particulates >2 μm diameter. Of this 35%, most of the E. coli (14%) were found to be associated with the size fraction 15–4 μm. This was attributed to the larger number of particles within this size range and its consequently greater surface area available for attachment. When results were normalised with respect to estimates of the surface area available for bacterial cell attachment to each size fraction, it was found that E. coli preferentially attached to those soil particles within the size range 30–16 μm. For soil particles >2 μm, E. coli showed at least 3.9 times more preference to associate with the 30–16 μm than any other fraction. We report that E. coli can associate with different soil particle size fractions in varying proportions and that this is likely to impact on the hydrological transfer of cells through soil and have clear implications for our wider understanding of the attachment dynamics of faecally derived bacteria in soils of different compositions.  相似文献

To determine the effects of defoliation on microbial community structure, rhizosphere soil samples were taken pre-, and post-defoliation from the root tip and mature root regions of Trifolium repens L. and Lolium perenne L. Microbial DNA isolated from samples was used to generate polymerase chain reaction–denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis molecular profiles of bacterial and fungal communities. Bacterial plate counts were also obtained. Neither plant species nor defoliation affected the bacterial and fungal community structures in both the root tip and mature root regions, but there were significant differences in the bacterial and fungal community profiles between the two root regions for each plant. Prior to defoliation, there was no difference between plants for bacterial plate counts of soils from the root tip regions; however, counts were greater in the mature root region of L. perenne than T. repens. Bacterial plate counts for T. repens were higher in the root tip than the mature root region. After defoliation, there was no effect of plant type, position along the root or defoliation status on bacterial plate counts, although there were significant increases in bacterial plate counts with time. The results indicate that a general effect existed during maturation in the root regions of each plant, which had a greater impact on microbial community structure than either plant type or the effect of defoliation. In addition there were no generic consequences with regard to microbial populations in the rhizosphere as a response to plant defoliation.  相似文献
