1. Patterns in the community structure and feeding guild composition among macroinvertebrates in the margins and riffles of 66 streams in upland Wales and Scotland were appraised and related to site chemistry, physiography and riparian management. We aimed to assess the effectiveness of riparian strips of broadleaves and moorland/grassland in protecting stream communities and their trophic function during commercial forestry. 2. The composition of macroinvertebrate communities in margins and riffles most strongly reflected stream pH and aluminium concentrations; acidic riffles contained fewest species of all major macroinvertebrate groups. However, the character of marginal habitats had some influence on communities in stream margins through the presence of broadleaf trees or moorland/grassland vegetation in the riparian zone. Even at low pH, streams with moorland riparian zones had different macroinvertebrates from those with pure conifer. 3. Stream chemistry was important in explaining patterns among feeding guilds. Species richness and abundances of grazers and filterers were reduced at acidic sites with high aluminium concentrations. The number of shredder species was significantly lower in riffles at low pH than at high pH. 4. In contrast, marginal habitat structure was of overriding importance in explaining patterns among collectors and predators. These functional groups were most abundant at sites with riparian zones of moorland and grassland, but scarce in streams where the bankside vegetation consisted of coniferous or broadleaved trees. Total grazer abundances were lowest at sites with riparian zones of pure conifer. 5. We conclude that riparian management can modify effects of forestry on the trophic dynamics and structure of the macroinvertebrate communities of upland streams, but the effect operates within a strong gradient due to acidity. Thus, the array of macroinvertebrates which may benefit from riparian management in forest streams is liable to be restricted by low pH. 6. We discuss the wider ramifications of riparian management for the conservation of streams during commercial forestry. In particular we assess if management proposals set out by the forestry industry are supported. We also discuss the problem of scale when considering measures implemented for stream conservation, emphasizing that the control of problems such as acidification may only be possible at a regional level.  相似文献

Various extraction and drying conditions for the isolation of kafirin from dry-milled, whole grain sorghum have been investigated, with a view to optimizing extraction of the protein for commercial food coatings and packaging films. The addition of sodium hydroxide to an aqueous ethanol extractant increased the yield and solubility of kafirin. Subsequent heat drying at 40 degrees C was shown to cause the kafirin to aggregate as indicated by an increase in intermolecular beta-sheets. Extraction of the flour using ethanol (70%, w/w) with 0.5% (w/w) sodium metabisulfite and 0.35% (w/w) sodium hydroxide at 70 degrees C followed by freeze-drying of the protein was found to produce a yield of 54% kafirin with good film-forming properties. The kafirin films were assessed for their sensory properties, tensile strength, strain, and water vapor permeability. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used to study the secondary structure of the extracted kafirins. The best films were made with kafirin containing a large proportion of nativelike alpha-helical structures with little intermolecular beta-sheet content as indicated by the Fourier transform infrared reflectance peak intensity ratios associated with these secondary structures. The principal factor affecting the secondary structure of the protein appeared to be the temperature at which the protein was dried. Heat drying resulted in a greater proportion of intermolecular beta-sheets. Any industrial-scale extraction must therefore minimize protein aggregation and maximize native alpha-helical structures to achieve optimal film quality.  相似文献

Formetanate hydrochloride is a bifunctional pesticide with remarkable solubility, high toxicity, and potential mobility in aqueous environments. The relative stability of the formamidine and carbamate groups in this compound can be used to predict the identity of its degradation products in water. The reported NMR and UV-vis spectroscopic studies revealed that the formamidine group is more labile than the carbamate group under strongly basic conditions, as well as under predetermined field conditions. The half-life of the formamidine group was determined to be 3.9 h under strongly basic conditions (pH 12.6) and 14.4 h under mildly basic conditions (pH 7.6). The longevity of the carbamate group may exceed 6 months due its resistance to base-promoted degradation. These results may be used in the design of more specific remediation technology for formetanate-contaminated surface water.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate long-term clinical outcome in dogs with upper airway obstruction treated with laryngeal web resection and mucosal apposition. DESIGN: Retrospective case series. ANIMALS: 15 client-owned dogs with laryngeal web formation. PROCEDURES: Medical records of dogs with laryngeal webs treated with a single procedure of web resection with mucosal apposition by use of a ventral laryngotomy were reviewed. Signalment, history, clinical signs, intraoperative complications, postoperative complications, and hospitalization time were recorded. Owners were interviewed 6 months to 6 years after surgery. RESULTS: Most dogs had a history of oral ventriculocordectomy. Duration of clinical signs ranged from 3 months to 3 years. The most common clinical sign reported was exercise intolerance. Postoperative complications were observed in 4 dogs. Follow-up information was available in 10 dogs, and clinical outcome was classified as excellent in 7 and good in 3. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: A single surgical procedure of web resection with mucosal apposition for the treatment of laryngeal web formation in dogs resulted in low morbidity and was associated with a good to excellent outcome.  相似文献

Since the middle of the last century agricultural intensification within Europe has led to a drastic decline in the extent of botanically diverse grasslands. Whilst measures to enhance the diversity of agriculturally-improved grasslands are in place, success has often been limited. One of the primary factors limiting success is the paucity of sources of propagules of desirable species in the surrounding landscape. The restoration of two contrasting grassland types (lowland hay meadow and chalk grassland) was examined using a replicated block experiment to assess the effectiveness of two methods of seed application (hay strewing and brush harvesting) and two methods of pre-treatment disturbance (power harrowing and turf stripping). The resulting changes in botanical composition were monitored for 4 years. Seed addition by both methods resulted in significant temporal trends in plant species composition and increases in plant species richness, which were further enhanced by disturbance. Power harrowing increased the effectiveness of the seed addition treatments at the lowland hay meadow site. At the chalk grassland site a more severe disturbance created by turf stripping was used and shown to be preferable. Whilst both hay strewing and brush harvesting increased plant species richness, hay strewing was more effective at creating a sward similar to that of the donor site. Soil disturbance and seed application rate at the recipient site and timing of the hay cut at the donor site are all factors to be considered prior to the commencement of restoration management.  相似文献

Legumes are important components of sustainable agricultural production, food, nutrition and income systems of developing countries. In spite of their importance, legume crop production is challenged by a number of biotic (diseases and pests) and abiotic stresses (heat, frost, drought and salinity), edaphic factors (associated with soil nutrient deficits) and policy issues (where less emphasis is put on legumes compared to priority starchy staples). Significant research and development work have been done in the past decade on important grain legumes through collaborative bilateral and multilateral projects as well as the CGIAR Research Program on Grain Legumes (CRP‐GL). Through these initiatives, genomic resources and genomic tools such as draft genome sequence, resequencing data, large‐scale genomewide markers, dense genetic maps, quantitative trait loci (QTLs) and diagnostic markers have been developed for further use in multiple genetic and breeding applications. Also, these mega‐initiatives facilitated release of a number of new varieties and also dissemination of on‐the‐shelf varieties to the farmers. More efforts are needed to enhance genetic gains by reducing the time required in cultivar development through integration of genomics‐assisted breeding approaches and rapid generation advancement.  相似文献

Arabidopsis thaliana accessions have adapted to growth in a wide range of climates. Variation in flowering and alignment of vernalization response with winter length are central to this adaptation. Vernalization involves the epigenetic silencing of the floral repressor FLC via a conserved Polycomb (PRC2) mechanism involving trimethylation of Lys(27) on histone H3 (H3K27me3). We found that variation for response to winter length maps to cis polymorphism within FLC. A rare combination of four polymorphisms localized around the nucleation region of a PHD-Polycomb complex determines a need for longer cold. Chromatin immunoprecipitation experiments indicate that these polymorphisms influence the accumulation of H3K27me3 in Arabidopsis accession Lov-1, both at the nucleation site and over the gene body. Quantitative modulation of chromatin silencing through cis variation may be a general mechanism contributing to evolutionary change.  相似文献
