Many byproducts and wastes generated by agroindustries contain polyphenols with potential application as food antioxidants and preventive agents against skin cancer and other diseases. The performance of polyphenolic fractions from Parellada grape (Vitis vinifera) pomace as antioxidants in different physicochemical environments was tested. Fractions containing oligomers with mean degree of polymerization between 3 and 4 and percentage galloylation ca. 30% were the most potent free radical scavengers and efficient antioxidants in an oil-in-water emulsion. A fraction including glycosylated flavonols was also efficient in the emulsion. All the fractions showed low aquatic toxicity and weak influence on proliferation of human melanoma cells.  相似文献

Purpose

The study was carried out in a wetland of the Middle Paraná River system, Argentina, in order to evaluate the processes associated with the decomposition of manure, which includes changes in chemical composition, nutrient release of manure, and colonization of invertebrates. We also compared the invertebrate assemblage that colonized manure with that present in the benthos of the wetland.

Materials and methods

Nylon bags were filled with fresh cattle manure and anchored to the littoral zone of the wetland. Six bags were collected after 1, 2, 6, 14, 21, 28, 33, 55, and 79 days: three for invertebrate determination and the other three bags for determination of dry mass and chemical analyses. The nutrient content, cellulose, lignin, and total phenolic compounds of manure were determined. In addition, the leachate of manure was collected for nutrient analyses. Samples of the wetland benthic sediment were collected for benthic invertebrate determination and particle size analyses. Spearman rank correlation was used to evaluate the relationship between chemical compounds of manure and breakdown rate. Principal component analysis was used to explore invertebrate assemblage composition of manure and sediment during the experiment.

Results and discussion

Limnodrilus, Dero, and Chironomus were dominant in the manure. Gatherer-collector was the dominant group in the manure, comprising almost 95 % of the total density of invertebrates. Breakdown rate was significantly related with nutrients, cellulose and total phenolics of manure. An ordination plot showed changes in invertebrate assemblages of manure and sediment samples over time.

Conclusions

This study provides new insight on the importance of manure as a substrate for macroinvertebrate colonization. Cattle manure needs to be considered as a potential source of nutrients for aquatic systems and a substrate for invertebrate assemblages.

The characteristic of proteins, starch and pectic substances in cotyledons of two bean cultivars varying in cooking time were determined to investigate their possible contribution to bean cooking quality. Both cultivars showed the same enthalpies of starch gelatinization but different protein denaturation enthalpies. The proportion of hot water soluble pectins was higher in Michigan, the cultivar with the lower cooking time, than in Ojo de Cabra, the cultivar with the higher cooking time. These results were not due to differences in pectin methylation or in the ratio of monovalent to divalent cations in the tissue, suggesting that in fresh beans the β-elimination reaction is not the sole or predominant route of thermal pectin degradation. Overall, this study indicates that varietal differences in bean cooking quality may be reflections of the rate of pectin loss during soaking/heating and that the thermal properties of starch and protein fractions seem to have a minor contribution. Researchers involved in this study propose that in fresh beans, the thermal pectin loss results from a two step mechanism: pectin enzymic breakdown during the bean soaking followed by thermal solubilization rather than β-elimination during the bean heating.  相似文献

Three levels of partial rootzone drying (PRD) were evaluated and compared with conventional irrigation, in terms of gas exchange, water relations, growth, yield, fruit quality, and water use efficiency in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) saladette-type plants growing in pots with volcanic material and drip irrigation. There were four treatments, a control, in which available water (AW) in the whole root system was allowed to fall to 90%; PRD90-30, in which on one side of the divided root AW was allowed to fall to 90% and on the other side it was allowed to fall to 30%; PRD70-30, in which on one side of the divided root AW was allowed to fall to 70% and on the other side it was allowed to fall to 30%; PRD50-30, in which on one side of the divided root AW was allowed to fall to 50% and on the other side it was allowed to fall to 30%. When each treatment reached the desired AW level they were then irrigated. At the same time, when on one side AW reached values ≤30% irrigation was shifted to the other side. Results showed a significant decrease of leaf water potential up to 14% in PRD plants compared with control. Shoot dry weight and leaf area decreased in relation to substrate available water in PRD plants. Stomatal conductance and transpiration rate were lower, up to 31 and 18%, respectively, in plants with PRD compared with control. However, CO2 assimilation rate was similar among treatments which along with the reduction of transpiration in PRD plants, increased instantaneous water use efficiency by 28, 25, and 33% in PRD90-30, PRD70-30, and PRD50-30 treatments, respectively, compared to control. Yield, number of fruits and fruit total soluble solids content were similar among treatments. An increase of 25% in fruit titratable acidity was reached in PRD50-30. Fruit firmness increased up to 31% in PRD treatments. PRD treatments allowed a water irrigation saving up to 46%.  相似文献

Nowadays, the use of marine by-products as precursor materials has gained great interest in the extraction and production of chemical compounds with suitable properties and possible pharmaceutical applications. The present paper presents the development of a new immediate release tablet containing calcium lactate obtained from Black Sea mussel shells. Compared with other calcium salts, calcium lactate has good solubility and bioavailability. In the pharmaceutical preparations, calcium lactate was extensively utilized as a calcium source for preventing and treating calcium deficiencies. The physical and chemical characteristics of synthesized calcium lactate were evaluated using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis and thermal analysis. Further, the various pharmacotechnical properties of the calcium lactate obtained from mussel shells were determined in comparison with an industrial used direct compressible Calcium lactate DC (PURACAL®). The obtained results suggest that mussel shell by-products are suitable for the development of chemical compounds with potential applications in the pharmaceutical domain.  相似文献

Three vigor zones, identified in a Barbera vineyard by remote sensing at full canopy, were carefully ground-truthed to determine, over 2 years, the relative weight of soil factors in affecting within-field variability, and to investigate vigor zone influence on dry matter (DM) and nutrient partitioning into different vine organs. Regardless of season, high vigor (HV) achieved stronger vine capacity as total vegetative growth and yield while resulting in markedly less ripened fruits than low vigor (LV) vines. PCA analysis carried out on ten different soil and vine variables clearly separated the three vigor levels and the correlation matrix highlighted that the factors mostly contributing to HV were soil depth, soil K and P concentration, total available water, clay fraction and Nleaf concentration. Conversely, sand fraction was the main marker for LV. When annual DM retrieved in clusters, canes, leaves, and shoot clippings was calculated for each vigor level and expressed as content (i.e. kg/ha) there was a general decreasing trend moving from HV to LV. However, when DM partitioned to each organ was given on a relative basis (i.e. percentage over total) results were similar across vigor levels. Similarly, when nutrients were given as content (e.g. kg or g/ha) out of 120 within-vigor combinations (12 nutrients, 2 seasons, 5 organs), 65 showed a significant difference between HV and LV. Conversely, with data expressed on a concentration basis (i.e. % DM) the number of significant differences between the vigor level means fell to 15. The study strengthens the causal link between soil properties and intra-vineyard spatial variability and clarifies that patterns of dry matter and nutrient partitioning to different vine organs are mildly affected by vine vigor when referred on a relative basis.

Pineapple (Ananas comosus (L.) Merr.) cultivars, often derived from somatic mutations, are propagated vegetatively. It has been suggested by isozyme data that there is little genetic variation among Smooth Cayenne cultivars. A thorough investigation of the genetic variation within the cultivated speciesAnanas comosus, particularly among commercial cultivars, will provide critical information needed for crop improvement and cultivar protection. One-hundred and forty-eight accessions ofA. comosus and 14 accessions of related species were evaluated with AFLP markers. The average genetic similarity ofA. comosus was 0.735 ranging from 0.549 to 0.972, suggesting a high degree of genetic variation within this species. With AFLP markers, discrete DNA fingerprints were detected for each commercial cultivar, breeding line, and intra-specific hybrid. Self-incompatibility, high levels of somatic mutation, and intraspecific hybridization may account for this high degree of variation. However, major cultivar groups of pineapple, such as Cayenne, Spanish, and Queen, could not be distinctively separated. These cultivar groups are based on morphological similarity, and the similar appearance can be caused by a few mutations that occurred on different genetic background. Our results suggest that there is abundant genetic variation within existing pineapple germplasm for selection, and discrete DNA fingerprinting patterns for commercial cultivars can be detected for cultivar protection. The genetic diversity and relationships of fourAnanas species are also discussed.  相似文献
