In the present work, gustatory glands (von Ebner's glands) of the horse tongue were examined by means of five peroxidase-conjugated lectins (PNA, DBA, SBA, UEA I, WGA), with and without prior sialidase digestion, in order to investigate the presence and distribution of carbohydrate residues in secretory cells and duct cells. The most intense staining of secretory cells was observed with PNA after pre-treatment with neuraminidase. This indicates that the terminal trisaccharide sequence sialic acid- (α2→3, 6) galactosyl (β1→3) N-acetylgalactosamine is the most frequent oligosaccharide chain present in glycoproteins secreted by horse gustatory glands. Secretory cells also contained oligosaccharides with terminal α-N-acetylgalactosamine and N-acetylglucosamine, whereas fucose was found in only a few glandular cells. The apical cytoplasm of duct lining cells reacted with all the lectins except WGA.  相似文献

Hemangiosarcoma is a rare neoplasm of horses and hemangiosarcoma in young horses might behave differently than in mature horses. The purpose of this study was to identify the characteristics of hemangiosarcoma occurring in horses < or = 3 years of age. Medical records from 1982 to 2004 were searched for horses < or = 3 years of age with a histopathologic diagnosis of hemangiosarcoma. Eleven records were identified. Thoroughbred and Thoroughbred crosses predominated. Age ranged from 9 days to 3 years. All horses presented with cutaneous or leg swellings or joint effusion. Physical examination findings included tachycardia, fever, and depression. Laboratory abnormalities included anemia (5/11), hyperfibrinogenemia (4/11), hypofibrinogenemia (3/11), thrombocytopenia (2/11), and neutrophilic leukocytosis (1/11). Ultrasonographic and radiographic evaluation was not diagnostic in any case. Antemortem histopathologic diagnosis was obtained in 10 cases. Six of 11 horses were euthanized. Surgical resection was performed in 5 horses, 2 of which were later euthanized. Diagnosis was confirmed histologically at postmortem examination in all euthanized horses. Two cases resolved spontaneously. Early histopathologic diagnosis may allow cure if the mass is localized and amenable to surgical resection. In cases where the horse is medically stable, and masses are not interfering with quality of life, a period of observation may be warranted.  相似文献

In an attempt to standardise the determination of biological reference values, the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry (IFCC) has published a series of recommendations on developing reference intervals. The IFCC recommends the use of an a priori sampling of at least 120 healthy individuals. However, such a high number of samples and laboratory analysis is expensive, time-consuming and not always feasible, especially in veterinary medicine. In this paper, an alternative (a posteriori) method is described and is used to determine reference intervals for biochemical parameters of farm animals using an existing laboratory data set. The method used was based on the detection and removal of outliers to obtain a large sample of animals likely to be healthy from the existing data set. This allowed the estimation of reliable reference intervals for biochemical parameters in Sarda dairy sheep. This method may also be useful for the determination of reference intervals for different species, ages and gender.  相似文献

CASE DESCRIPTION: 5 horses were evaluated because of decreased appetite, weight loss, fever, cough, tachypnea, and respiratory distress. CLINICAL FINDINGS: Tachycardia, tachypnea, increased respiratory effort, lethargy, fever, poor body condition, and nasal discharge were detected in various combinations on initial physical examination. Evaluation of the lower portion of the respiratory tract via radiography and ultrasonography revealed a severe nodular interstitial pattern. Histologic examination of lung tissue revealed interstitial expansion of alveolar parenchyma with collagen, intraluminal accumulation of neutrophils and macrophages within the alveoli, and occasional intranuclear inclusion bodies within alveolar macrophages. Equine herpesvirus type 5 was detected in samples of lung tissue, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, or both via polymerase chain reaction assay in all cases. A diagnosis of equine multinodular pulmonary fibrosis (EMPF) was established. TREATMENT AND OUTCOME: Horses were provided supportive treatment and were administered a variety of medications including corticosteroids and acyclovir. Two horses survived and returned to their previous level of activity. Three horses were euthanized because of either deterioration of clinical condition (n=2) or failure to improve within 4 weeks of initiation of treatment (1). CLINICAL RELEVANCE: EMPF should be considered as a differential diagnosis for adult horses with interstitial pneumonia and should be suspected on the basis of characteristic radiographic, ultrasonographic, and histopathologic findings. Equine herpesvirus type 5 is found in association with EMPF; although the exact pathogenic role this virus plays in EMPF is unknown, equine herpesvirus type 5 may be an etiologic agent or cofactor in the development of EMPF.  相似文献

In this report, we describe Henneguya arapaima n. sp., a parasite of the gill arch and gall bladder of Arapaima gigas (pirarucu) collected in the Araguaia River, in the municipality of Nova Crixás, Goiás State, central Brazil. The plasmodia were white, round or ellipsoidal and measured 200-600mum. Parasite development was asynchronous and the mature spores were fusiform and had smooth wall. The spores measurements were (range, with means+/-S.D. in parentheses): total length-48.4-53.1mum (51.6+/-3.4mum), body length-13.5-15.2mum (14.2+/-0.8mum), body width-5.1-6.1mum (5.7+/-0.5mum), body thickness-4.7-5.3mum (4.9+/-0.2mum) and caudal process length-38.0-41.2mum (38.3+/-2.9mum). The polar capsules were elongated and of unequal size, with lengths of 6.3-6.8mum (6.5+/-0.2) and 6.2-6.6mum (6.3+/-0.1) for the longest and shortest axes, respectively. Capsule width was 1.4-1.6mum (1.5+/-0.1). Histological analysis showed that the plasmodia occurred in the tunica adventitia of the gall bladder and were delimited by a thin capsule of connective tissue. In the gill arch, the plasmodia were also surrounded by connective tissue similar to the endomesium of striated skeletal muscle cells. Sixty-five juvenile specimens of A. gigas weighing 1.0-25.0kg were examined, 17 (26.1%) of which were infected. Of these, 14 (82.3%) had cysts in the gall bladder, two (11.7%) had cysts in the gill arch and only one (5.9%) had cysts in both organs. When the fish were grouped by weight, the prevalence of infection in fish weighing up to 10.0kg (20.7%) was significantly lower than in fish weighing 10.1-25.0kg (50%) (G=3.93; d.f.=1; p<0.05).  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to investigate the presence and the distribution of cells containing orexin A and orexin type 2 receptor in the horse stomach and gut, by means of immunohistochemical techniques.Orexin A was identified in the stomach fundic and pyloric regions and in the duodenum. In the same stomach regions, a large subset of orexin A-positive cells also showed orexin type 2 receptor-like immunoreactivity. Moreover, in the duodenum, many of them, seemed to store serotonin.Characteristically, enteric neurons or ganglia also displayed orexin A and, sometimes, orexin type 2 receptor immunoreaction.Orexin A and orexin type 2 receptor immunoreactivity was also found in the nerve fibers in the enteric submucosal layer. Our results, together with data present in the literature, could contribute to the understanding of complex mechanisms regulating the horse gut functionality that are depending very likely on the consequence of the co-operation of both a central and a peripheral control.  相似文献

It is widely documented that a pool of multipotent stem cells located in humans and mice hair follicle outer root sheath (bulge region) is involved in the restoration of the whole follicular unit during each anagen phase. To the authors' knowledge, data regarding the location and characterization of hair follicle stem compartment in dogs have not been reported in the recent relevant literature. In this study, we investigated the haematopoietic stem and progenitor cell antigen CD34 as a marker of putative stem cells located in a bulge-like region of canine hair follicles. The presence of CD34 mRNA and glycoprotein was assessed on formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded canine skin samples by in situ hybridization technique and by standard immunohistochemistry, respectively. A strong expression of CD34 mRNA and glycoprotein was observed in a well-defined area of the hair follicle isthmic region and appeared uniformly concentrated at the level of the basal layer of the outer root sheath. These findings provide compelling support to the hypothesis that in dogs, a subpopulation of basal keratinocytes located in the hair follicle isthmic region and characterized by the selective expression of CD34 is potentially associated with the stem cell compartment of this skin appendage.  相似文献

Detailed histopathological evaluation of the gastric mucosa of Helicobacter-infected cats is complicated by the difficulty of recognizing Helicobacter organisms on hematoxylin and eosin (HE)-stained sections and the ability of multiple Helicobacter species to infect cats. In this study, the presence and localization of different species of Helicobacter in the stomachs of cats was investigated using silver staining and immunohistochemistry. Five groups containing 5 cats each were established (group 1: urease negative and Helicobacter free; groups 2, 3, 4, and 5: urease positive and infected with Helicobacter heilmannii, unclassified Helicobacter spp., Helicobacter felis, and Helicobacter pylori, respectively). Gastric samples were evaluated by HE and silver staining and by immunohistochemistry with 3 different anti-Helicobacter primary antibodies. Helicobacter were detected by Steiner stain in all infected cats at the mucosal surface, in the lumen of gastric glands, and in the cytoplasm of parietal cells. In silver-stained sections, H. pylori was easily differentiated from H. felis, H. heilmannii, and unclassified Helicobacter spp., which were larger and more tightly coiled. No organisms were seen in uninfected cats. Helicobacter antigen paralleled the distribution of organisms observed in Steiner-stained sections for 2 of the 3 primary antibodies tested. The antisera were not able to discriminate between the different Helicobacter species examined. A small amount of Helicobacter antigen was present in the lamina propria of 3 H. pylori-, 3 H. felis-, and 1 H. heilmannii-infected cat. Minimal mononuclear inflammation was present in uninfected cats and in those infected with unclassified Helicobacter spp. and H. heilmannii cats. In H. felis-infected cats, lymphoid follicular hyperplasia with mild pangastric mononuclear inflammation and eosinophilic infiltrates were present. The H. pylori-infected cats had severe lymphoid follicular hyperplasia and mild to moderate mononuclear inflammation accompanied by the presence of neutrophils and eosinophils. These findings indicate that Steiner staining and immunohistochemistry are useful for detecting Helicobacter infections, particularly when different Helicobacter species can be present. Monoclonal antibodies specific for the different Helicobacter species could be important diagnostic aids. There appear to be differences in the severity of gastritis in cats infected with different Helicobacter species.  相似文献
