The mobilities of ions produced in electrical discharges in the presence of trace quantities of water vapor and sulfur dioxide are generally lower than those expected for simple ions. Mass spectrometric identification reveals that species composed of water vapor and sulfur dioxide molecules clustering about common atmospheric ions are formed under these conditions. The identification of these clusters provides an explanation for the effect of trace gases on the mobilities of ions. 相似文献

The dissolution of acids is one of the most fundamental solvation processes, and an important issue is the nature of the hydration complex resulting in ion pair formation. We used femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy to show that five water molecules are necessary for complete dissolution of a hydrogen bromide molecule to form the contact ion pair H+.Br-(H2O)n in the electronic ground state. In smaller mixed clusters (n < 5), the ion pair formation can be photoinduced by electronic excitation. 相似文献

Findings of magic peaks corresponding to M(8)C(12)(+) (M = V, Zr, and Hf) formed from reactions of the respective metals with various small hydrocarbons, in conjunction with recent findings for the titanium system, establish metallo-carbohedrenes as a stable general class of molecular cluster ions. Molecular and antigenic analyses of three influenza viruses isolated from outbreaks of severe respiratory disease in racing greyhounds revealed that they are closely related to H3N8 equine influenza virus. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that the canine influenza virus genomes form a monophyletic group, consistent with a single interspecies virus transfer. Molecular changes in the hemagglutinin suggested adaptive evolution in the new host. The etiologic role of this virus in respiratory disease was supported by the temporal association of rising antibody titers with disease and by experimental inoculation studies. The geographic expansion of the infection and its persistence for several years indicate efficient transmission of canine influenza virus among greyhounds. Evidence of infection in pet dogs suggests that this infection may also become enzootic in this population. 相似文献

Two classes of gas-phase aluminum-iodine clusters have been identified whose stability and reactivity can be understood in terms of the spherical shell jellium model. Experimental reactivity studies show that the Al13I-x clusters exhibit pronounced stability for even numbers of I atoms. Theoretical investigations reveal that the enhanced stability is associated with complementary pairs of I atoms occupying the on-top sites on the opposing Al atoms of the Al13- core. We also report the existence of another series, Al14I-x, that exhibits stability for odd numbers of I atoms. This series can be described as consisting of an Al14I-3 core upon which the I atoms occupy on-top locations around the Al atoms. The potential synthetic utility of superatom chemistry built upon these motifs is addressed. 相似文献

Light microscopic and transmission electron microscopic changes were studied in the livers of 6 cats at 25 to 54 days after their extrahepatic bile ducts were experimentally obstructed. Histologic findings included various degrees of bile duct dilatation, ductular proliferation, and peribiliary fibrosis. Concentric layers of dense, birefringent connective tissue surrounded midsized bile ducts. The degrees of bile duct proliferation, hepatocellular degeneration, and bile retention were similar in each cat, but the amount of periductular connective tissue increased with chronicity of bile duct obstruction. Ultrastructural changes included marked swelling of endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondrial inner compartments, marked dilatation and distention of the canaliculi by bile casts, and numerical reduction of canalicular microvilli. Microvilli were often swollen and blunt. Mitochondria were swollen and long, and the cristae lacked normal distribution and density. Cytoplasmic accumulations of granular, electron-dense material and concentrically laminated arrays of material indicative of bile substances were also observed. 相似文献

Airway eosinophilia has been proposed as a major pathogenetic event in bronchial asthma and airway hyperresponsiveness. Intravenous injection of Sephadex G200 in rats induces pulmonary and blood eosinophilia and alters pulmonary responsiveness to 5-hydroxytryptamine. To characterize the early pulmonary inflammatory responses following Sephadex administration, and to determine the timing of the onset of pulmonary eosinophilia relative to blood eosinophilia, Sprague-Dawley rats were injected intravenously with Sephadex G200 beads. Lungs and other tissues were examined by light and transmission electron microscopy at 4, 12, 24, 48, 72, and 96 hours after injection. Blood eosinophil counts were determined at 0, 24, and 96 hours after injection. Sephadex beads were trapped initially in small caliber muscular pulmonary arteries associated with terminal bronchioles and in intra-acinar locations. There was marked infiltration of eosinophils and macrophages around the beads and into arterial walls and edematous periarterial and peribronchiolar connective tissue as early as 4 hours after injection. Periarterial-peribronchiolar eosinophil aggregates peaked in density at 24 and 48 hours. Macrophages and multinucleated cells dominated the inflammatory cell responses in arteries immediately surrounding partially degraded Sephadex beads from 24 to 96 hours. Bone marrow eosinophilopoiesis and blood eosinophilia were not detected until 96 hours. We conclude that Sephadex induces pulmonary eosinophilia prior to blood eosinophilia and suggest that Sephadex may induce pulmonary release of one or more eosinophil chemotactic substance(s). This model may prove useful in the study of factors that influence eosinophil migration into the lung in various disease states. 相似文献

The objectives of our research were to determine whether bovine pulmonary type-II alveolar epithelial cells could be isolated from bovine lung and maintained in tissue culture and to determine whether isolated bovine type-II alveolar epithelial cells would support productive viral replication of bovine parainfluenza type-3 virus and bovine respiratory syncytial virus. Type-II alveolar epithelial cells were isolated from lungs of 4- to 7-day-old male Holstein calves by enzymatic dissociation of pulmonary tissue with trypsin and by separation of cells with the use of filtration and centrifugation on continuous Percoll gradients. Cells were further separated by panning on IgG-coated plastic plates and by lectin binding. Isolated type-II alveolar cells were maintained on basement membrane-coated tissue cultured plates. In culture, type-II cells formed alveolar structures and maintained other cytologic features of type-II cells, including osmiophilic lamellar inclusions. Cell cultures were inoculated with and supported productive replication of bovine parainfluenza type-3 virus and bovine respiratory syncytial virus. This was determined by recovery of infectious viruses from inoculated cell cultures and by identification of viral structures in type-II alveolar epithelial cells by transmission electron microscopy. 相似文献
